Ive just started work on my s13 the plan is to fully strip it and fit an RB25 DET lump firstly im goin to trial fit the engine and that and get it running so i can sort out the body work then it will come out again for a full rebuild im undecided on spec and such will worry about that wen it comes to it: This will include detailed pics on how the conversion is done everything you need and also prices for those of you who are thinking of doing it yourselves.

http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa192/rb200/Picture024.jpg

this is the base car i got it for £350 off of ebay, taxed and tested.

http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa192/rb200/Picture044.jpg

i took the engine and gearbox straight out.

http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa192/rb200/Picture056.jpg

pic ere with the cross member removed i left steering rack on and supported it with an axle stand,

http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa192/rb200/Picture059.jpg
wings off
http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa192/rb200/Picture060.jpg

http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa192/rb200/Picture061.jpg
theres bit rust ere later cut it out and got some sheet metal ready to weld it up,

http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa192/rb200/Picture064.jpg
slight surface rust round the front nothin bad,
http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa192/rb200/Picture065.jpg
i cut out the battery tray needs some tidying up

http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa192/rb200/Picture066.jpg

http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa192/rb200/Picture067.jpg
its rusted through ere looks like it been done before but they made a bad job of it,

http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa192/rb200/Picture070.jpg
so ive stripped most bit out of the bay now and started taking it back to bare metal

http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa192/rb200/Picture071.jpg
took me ages to get this far

http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa192/rb200/Picture073.jpg
looks good in bare metal

http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa192/rb200/Picture072.jpg

started on the bulk head ive also knocked it back and up abit around gearbox tunnel just to make it more easy to fit the RB gearbox ,
over last few days ive taken off a few more parts and started on the front taking it back to bare metal its such a time consuming job,
the plan is to strip it all stitch weld the chassis and prime it over the next week or so,
ive got my R33 GTST cross member hoping to send that off for shotblasting and powder coating i will put more pics up asap,

My loom has been sent upto buffy so he can wrk his magic,
and this is the biuld so far only took a week or so to get this far thats working on her after i get home from wrk hope u all enjoy

http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa192/rb200/Picture063.jpg

heres the skyline cross member its goin to be shot blasted and then powder coated
http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa192/rb200/Picture076.jpg

got this also off of ebay super mini tt
http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa192/rb200/Picture075.jpg

skyshack is right but I am going to clutter it up :D

Firstly some questions :)

Why are you stripping the paint off everywhere? I would have thought that some areas, the bulkhead for example, don’t need to be stripped back to bare metal?

Like myself, I see you are working outside and it’s not easy  how are you going to stop everything rusting with so much bare metal exposed?

How are you going to fettle the rust where the chassis leg meets the inner wing?

http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa192/rb200/Picture066.jpg

Fantastic project with superb pics  I will be watching with great interest :)
Pics like this are invaluable :notworthy

http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa192/rb200/Picture004-2.jpg

It gives us a good idea of the condition inside the chassis legs. I intend to wax inject our S13 now – but I won’t be using waxoyl

Keep up the good work

HI peeps firstly thanks for all the nice comments :D

ive stripped everthink back 2 bare metal as i want to repaint everything i can so it all like new as most parts will also be new or cleaned up, i got the rust off the chassis leg where it meets the inner wing with a wire brush on a drill these are great then used sand paper for the little bits.

As for the cutting of the rear ive cut it back as ill be welding in a piece of sheet metal to house the new in car fuel tank, after removing the metal i found alot of surface rust but nothin major, its unbelivable where water gets trapped and bits you didnt think would rust start to.:(

If anyone wants any specific photos of anything let me know or if you want any advice, ive just got my deox jel today so will start removin some rust :D

Sweeet!! im doing my Rb swap some time this week ill also do a write up.
but theres a few bits i dont understand and may get stuck on so if any one local to me wanna give a hand it will be appreciated.
what else of the skyline fits the s13?
rb did you get a full skyline?
what parts you going to use from it?
have you found any problems so far?
im doing my loom myself as im good with wires, lol
how come you bare metal-ed it all? cant you just treat the rustey areas?
i take it you removed the spare wheel hole to save on weight instead of welding a plate over it?
i think your doing a wicked job there and if you was closer i would come help ya.
ill be watching this space!!
can you pm me your msn address so i can ask questions on the way on ur build to save cluttering up your project page.
cheers

No im waiting to buy the engine till more or less last as i know if i buy it now id be so tempted cut corners here and there to hurry and get it in lol, this way i can make sure everything else is perfect ready for the engine,

im ordering my primer for the floor and arches but im not sure whats best to go for obviously i need something weather proof and hard wearing to protect from the road ect so if anyone has any ideas let me know, ill also need something to seal it after.

Petrol
06-07-2007, 19:56
Best really depends upon preparation standards. If its perfect then a 2K primer followed by a 2K epoxy mastic will offer the best protection though the finish will be a compromise, epoxy mastic dries satin.
If there’s any rust at all then I would go for a zinc rich primer followed by either epoxy mastic or a full gloss 2K. Then there’s the POR stuff but I know very little about that. Regardless of what you use I would still spray some stonechip over the top but you need to be careful, It’s not a good idea to use stonechip where anything is fastened to the shell. I will be posting pics up in my thread of how to do this.

I have 5L of epoxy mastic that I don’t need. I went for the shiny full gloss stuff. PM me if you are interested.
Keep up the good work and keep those pics coming

Edit: What size of compressor did you buy and did it run the blast gun OK?

RB200
06-07-2007, 20:36
i got 2hp 50litre tank it runs the shotblaster so well, ive just order some epoxy mastic chassis pack, will i need to put a primer on before applying this? as it says it can go straigh onto bare metal, i would of brought urs didnt see the post in time  ,
ill be posting pics up soon there will be not rust before i apply the primer im getting rid of it all  i get my welder 2moro so progress should be full steam ahead again

well not really done much lately been being lazy but heres what i have done:

http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa192/rb200/Picture007-3.jpg
started stripping the arches this is the drivers side found abit of rust around the seams

http://s200.photobucket.com/albums/aa192/rb200/?action=view&current=Picture008-2.jpg
it had rusted right through in one part

ive now nearly stripped all the underseal off these are the only places there were rust

http://s200.photobucket.com/albums/aa192/rb200/?action=view&current=Picture010-2.jpg
where the subby bolts to the floor

http://s200.photobucket.com/albums/aa192/rb200/?action=view&current=Picture011-2.jpg
same on both sides

http://s200.photobucket.com/albums/aa192/rb200/?action=view&current=Picture016.jpg
other than that the body is solid underneath

http://s200.photobucket.com/albums/aa192/rb200/?action=view&current=Picture017.jpg

http://s200.photobucket.com/albums/aa192/rb200/?action=view&current=Picture015.jpg
both rear arches are fine

well not really done much lately been being lazy but heres what i have done:

http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa192/rb200/Picture007-3.jpg
started stripping the arches this is the drivers side found abit of rust around the seams

http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa192/rb200/Picture008-2.jpg
it had rusted right through in one part

ive now nearly stripped all the underseal off these are the only places there were rust

http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa192/rb200/Picture010-2.jpg
where the subby bolts to the floor

http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa192/rb200/Picture011-2.jpg
same on both sides

http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa192/rb200/Picture016.jpg
other than that the body is solid underneath

http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa192/rb200/Picture017.jpg

http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa192/rb200/Picture015.jpg
both rear arches are fine

Hey heres a little update, i got my sheet of metal today,
so i started by making this,

http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa192/rb200/Picture025.jpg
i only used it to get the corners right once that was done i then put it onto the sheet,

http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa192/rb200/Picture019.jpg

i then cutted it out and trial fitted it,
http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa192/rb200/Picture021.jpg
needs about half a cm taken of to fit into the corner i perposly made it bigger so i had i little to play with,

http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa192/rb200/Picture022.jpg
top fits perfect

http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa192/rb200/Picture023.jpg
sides also fit perfect and flow with the arches,

http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa192/rb200/Picture024-1.jpg
here at the back ill cut out little strips of metal and join each 2gether,

well thats it for now thought id give u a little taster, lots more has been done ill post pics up soon:thumbs:

IIRC the R32 4x4 gearbox was fine running just RWD, and needed only a fuse unplugging to get to work.

Remember hearing something about the R33/R34 boxes having a clutch style transfer box or something. Could be a load of goblers though and be fine as well.

I would "prime as you go" - blast as much as you can in a day and then prime it. Zinc primer dries pretty quick (under an hour) so there will be no probs with grit sticking to it when you start blasting again

well bit of an update, i sent rb200 off for shotblasting last week had to hire a trailor n that, the company who was doing it quoted me £50-£100 to blast underneath and the engine bay and said nothing would be damaged in the process

he then rang me the monday an said they need to roll the car on its roof to blast it so it will damage all glass, he then said it will damage the car and wiring, the quote then jumped to £400, so i brought the car back home abit of a set back,

They also picked the car up with a fork truck and bent underneath also bending the seem of the floor pan.
So not to happy at the min such a waste of time it also cost me £160 to get it there n back for nothing
