After bodging together several S13s over the last 10 years i've finally found one that's worth doing right. I picked it up about a month ago with only 85k miles on it, full service history and one of the best pre-facelift chassis i've ever seen. Only immediate problem with it was the turbo seals were shot. A temporary install of a one-way valve sorted that until i can get a recently acquired T28 on there (cheers Kev :notworthy ).

Here's the car when i'd just picked it up

http://www.t3retrocars.com/images/project/frontqtr2.jpg

First job was sorting the horrific arch gaps by fitting some Apex 6/4 coilovers i had lying around.

I also had some S14 callipers, goodridge hoses and a spare set of facelift front discs lying around so they went on too. One thing i noticed was that the car already had facelift disc shields on it  no big deal as it just made fitting the facelift discs easier :D

Now sitting at a more respectable height :)

http://www.t3retrocars.com/images/project/dtp2.JPG

When fitting the rear i spotted that the rear sill had been welded previously, looked tidy but Kev managed to prod a hole in it within about 3 minutes of him turning up :wack:

Job for this weekend ..... Sort out the rear sills.

offside sill is now sorted with some fresh 1.2mm plate (it was by far the worst area on the car). I would have done the nearside too but ran out of mig gas :censored:

Also took the opportunity to ditch the nasty 17's from the back in favour of some better wheels with a bit more rubber :D

Will swap the front wheels too if i can find some more 17mm wheel nuts :annoyed:

Finally go to round to doing some more work on the car

Started tackling the offside rear sill.... thought it would just be a small plate it needed

http://www.t3retrocars.com/images/project/090607_1.jpg

http://www.t3retrocars.com/images/project/090607_2.jpg
(note the leaking subframe bush)

lots of grinding, 3 big 1.2mm plates, some welding, sealing, painting and undersealing later ....

http://www.t3retrocars.com/images/project/090607_3.jpg

Had to stop for a while to pick up the newest member of the T3 family ... he's been christened "Decat" :D

http://www.t3retrocars.com/images/project/090607_0.jpg

The leaking subby bush has brought forward the dif, subframe, rear arm and brake line swap so the replacement parts were removed from the spare car. Wih any luck i'll get them all fitted tomorrow.

http://www.t3retrocars.com/images/project/090607_4.jpg

oh .. and i found out why my old car had a horrible clunk from the transmission when flooring it.

.... i'd missed out the top bushes when i fitted the S14 dif :wack:

http://www.t3retrocars.com/images/project/090607_5.jpg

marty_t3
10-06-2007, 21:58
The offending bush ...

http://www.t3retrocars.com/images/project/100607_1.jpg

Better of the 2 subframes was used along with the S14 dif, camber arms, some poly bushes and the original 4 stud hubs. The 5 studs will be going back on once i get some decent redrilled S13 discs for them.

http://www.t3retrocars.com/images/project/100607_2.jpg

While the subframe was off i ditched the dif cooler and pump and cleaned up any rust i could find ... which was virtually none  I just cleaned up some of the underseal and slapped some stonechip on it. I was going to replace the brake lines too but the original 18 year old ones were absolutely fine

http://www.t3retrocars.com/images/project/100607_3.jpg

The whole lot has been refitted. I adjusted the coilovers a little to add some more preload and raised the back another 10mm. I also reduced the camber a little.
http://www.t3retrocars.com/images/project/100607_4.jpg

In the absence of the correct tophat dif mounts i used my own high spec, custom fabricated BFO washers :wack: At least the dif won't be bouncing around this time.

Just took it for a quick test run up and down the street to make sure the brakes are ok and there are no clunks from the back end ... everything seemed ok.

Then I walked back into the garage and almost tripped over something ....

the antiroll bar that i forgot to refit :wack:

Oh well ... i'll add that to tomorrow nights jobs :D

That is one clean car for its year.
Will be doing me bushes soon too. Are the a pain to fit

marty_t3
10-06-2007, 23:19
Fitting the new ones is the easy bit... getting the old ones out is the pain in the ass part. If it's the subframe bushes you're doing then they need the centres punching/drilling/ pressing out. Then the outer metal case needs to be sawn through so you can fold it in on itself to get it out.

Fitting the new poly ones takes about 5 minutes, they just press straight in. If it's the Nismo type ones they'll need to be pressed in.

xborninthefight
10-06-2007, 23:29
Yep the subframe ones, its the driftworks ones i got. Well it prob will take long as it took me about two days to fit a new clutch. :D

Well, the rear arb is now fitted :wack:

http://www.t3retrocars.com/images/project/110607_1.jpg

I'd planned to do th front ARB tonight so that went on too. I was being extra careful with the driver side bolts as the last 2 cars i've worked on have broken the weld holding the captive nut inside the chassis leg. Oddly enough all the other botls came out fine but the "dodgy" one was getting too tight for comfort. Fortunately it's the one that uses the slotted hole in the arb mounting bracket. I just managed to get the old ARB off and the new(er) one on without completely removing the bolt :)

http://www.t3retrocars.com/images/project/110607_2.jpg

While fitting the front arb i noticed this leaking bush on the nearside TC rod ....

http://www.t3retrocars.com/images/project/110607_3.jpg

So, yet another job that i wasn't planning on doing just yet was brought forward. Some adjustable TC rods i had lying around went on.

http://www.t3retrocars.com/images/project/110607_4.jpg

Everything was reassembled ready for the wheels to go back on. Yak must be rubbing off on me as i even refitted the undertray :wack: I didn't even use any tie wraps :D

Decided to test fit the front wheels that'll be going on once i've got them painted. They fit fine and clear the calliper ok but i'd prefer then to sit a little further out so some longer studs and a 10mm spacer may need to be acquired.

Didn't manage to get much done tonight, fell asleep when i got home from work and didn't wake up till Kev came tound to pick up some gearbox bits :wack:

Once i finally got my ass in gear i ditched the stock fuel pump in favour of the walbro from the old car. I reused the original bracket though as it was far less rusty than the one that already had the walbro on it. Forgot to get pics so here's the bits i left over :wack:

http://www.t3retrocars.com/images/project/120607_1.jpg

While i was messing around in the boot i thought i'd sort the dodgy boot release. I shifted the catch down about 3mm to tighten it up a bit ... the boot opens every time now.

http://www.t3retrocars.com/images/project/120607_3.jpg

Next, I took the instruments out and wired the ABS light up to the battery light so it at least looks like it's working. There's no sensor wired up to the S14 dif i fitted the other day and ABS will be getting ditched anyway so this is just to get the car through it's MOT (runs out next week).

While the instruments were out i figured i might as well fit the "new" steering wheel. I've used a momo boss and a Grant Racing wheel which pulls the wheel closer to the driver. It's a bit of a stretch for the indicators but i find it better to drive that way (i must have short arms :wack: ). The wheel doesn't have a horn button so an old spare rear wiper switch has been wired up as the horn switch and fitted to the spare switch slot behind the indicator stalk.

Catch tank fitted.

http://www.t3retrocars.com/images/project/130607_1.jpg

Harnesses now fitted too. I had no real reason to fit these now as i've still to fit the bucket seats from the old car ... i just wanted them in the car so it looks a little less standard :wack:

http://www.t3retrocars.com/images/project/130607_2.jpg

Note ... still no tie wraps :D

oh.. i also adjusted the coilovers again this morning and set the damping to 13(f) and 10(r) on SM's advice. Car is a lot less bouncy and feels a lot better to drive now

Do you have to have it there on that side.

marty_t3
13-06-2007, 23:23
Nope, most folk fit them on the other side. Ideally it should be high up like at the top of a suspension turret, i've just put mine there until i free up space when the ABS pump gets ditched.

Started on the FMIC install today. First job was to move the battery to the boot. In the process i noticed the swimming pool waslooking kinda full so it was drained for closer inspection.

http://www.t3retrocars.com/images/project/160607_1.jpg

Looked a bit scruffy at first but once it was rubbeddown a bit it didn't seem to bad. Just gave it a coat of paint to clean it up a bit.

I thought i'd just use the original battery bracket to hold it in place so i welded 2 tabs to the boot floor to accomodate. I didn't have any decent cable for the (+)ive cable to it's been temporarily hooked up using some heavy duty amp cable until i get something decent to replace it.

Made a bit more progress on the sideskirts yesterday.

Sideskirts filled and sealed in place. I decided i'm going to replace the black strip so i filled up to it and planned to paint over it and use the replacement strip to cover the join between the old paint and the new.

http://www.t3retrocars.com/images/project/180607_1.jpg

Smoothed down with 120 grit then 240 grit, used 400grit to key the surface afterwards

http://www.t3retrocars.com/images/project/180607_2.jpg

Masked up and rubbed down with a tack cloth

http://www.t3retrocars.com/images/project/180607_3.jpg

Few coats of primer ...

First dust coat with the colour ... at this point i was panicking about the colour match :indiff:

Halfords paint turned out to be a semi decent match fortunately

Just called the garage to see how the MOT went.

The mechanic sounded really sympathetic when he read out the list of 9 fail items and explained that there a lot of work required :( He then sounded a little shocked when i told him i'd pick the car up at 5:30pm and would like to book it in for a retest tomorrow at 9am :D

Fail list includes

All braided hoses not secured/routed correctly (bit odd this one as i remember refitting the clips),

Pitted rear brake disc (i knew about this but hoped it was still good enough for a pass),

Binding front calliper (I thought it might just pass as it is),

Both front brake lines needing replaced (didn't really want to have to do these yet as they'll be getting redone when i ditch the ABS pump),

Loose bolt on one of the camber arms (i must have missed this one when i tightened the rest of them up :wack: )

Well the MOT is work is done, had ot borrow some rear discs from Yak ( cheers  ) as my spares wouldn't go through an MOT without a few weeks use to clean them up. Booked back in for Monday.

Decided to sort out the wheels while the car was up waiting on getting the brakes done.

washed, rubbed down with 120, 240, and 400 grit then attacked with a tack cloth ...

http://www.t3retrocars.com/images/project/230607_1.jpg

primed ... rather than masking off the tyre i just used a bit of bent cardboard and moved it around while i was spraying.

http://www.t3retrocars.com/images/project/230607_2.jpg

Painted and laquered ...

http://www.t3retrocars.com/images/project/230607_3.jpg

Now waiting for the laquer to harden before i finish polishing the lips

http://www.t3retrocars.com/images/project/230607_4.jpg

Also found out why the tester was questioning the braided hoses ... i'm using the shorter S14 braided hoses along with the original hardpipe on the 14 callipers. It leaves some excess hose that appears to twist when the wheels are turned to full lock. Bracketing the hose to the chassis rail just below the standard bracket will sort it

Decided to paint the panel between the rear light. Usual drill ... key the plastic with 400 grit, mask up, tack cloth, prime, paint and laquer.

Did you refit the diff cooler?

Yep it's all just Halfords rattlecans. Worked out cheaper and less hassle than buying paint, handener, thinners, laquer etc for the spray guns.

Dif cooler hasn't been refitted.

Must admit, there's been a distinct lack of snapped bolts so far :) A lot of the bits i've taken apart had already been copper greased too.

Can you do mine? :smash:

Looking good Marty, coming along a lot quicker than my S13 is at the mo, damn DIY :(

DId you only respray the faces of the Sparcos? I have got to give mine a blow over but want to paint both inside and outer, but wondering best way to do it without getting dry edges (tyres removed). Was thinking about painting the insides/backs then quickly turning them over rest the centre bore on something then paint the faces while back is still wet hopefully stopping any dry overspray - maybe :wack:

Were those 180sx skirts you fitted?

marty_t3
25-06-2007, 20:14
Yeah the inside of the wheels have been painted too.. i didn't give them the same prepatation as the faces though, just a quick rub down to key the surface really. It was made a bit easier to do with the tyres still on as the wheel could be turned over and layed flat without the painted bits touching the bench.

The skirts are 180sx copies i think

Hallsy
25-06-2007, 20:21
Yeah, well initially I was thinking that as one pair have tyres off I'll paint these and do complete wheel, but more I think about it, it might be easier to prep them then get some tyres on for that very reason

What widths & offset are yours?

Only reason I asked about the skirts is due to the filling you were doing on the rear qauarters, I have OEM ones that I have trial fitted and wondered if the fit would be similar.

marty_t3
25-06-2007, 21:22
Fronts are 16x7 ET38, rears are 16x8 ET34 i think.

The fit of my sideskirts won't be a particularly good guide. I had them on my old 13 which had a dodgy rear arch reapir so that skirt had been stretched a fair bit to fit. Oddly enough it's the side that had been stretched on the old car that fits best on the new car.

The filler i used was just to smooth the seam between the panels rather than fill any holes, although there is one gap i didn't think would be that noticable that i'll need to touch up at some point.

Looking good Marty :D Nice to see you cracking on with your own, rather than just Yaks, Mine and a few other locals (and even on not-so-local recently).

Give me a shout if theres something you need a hand with, need to bob in shortly, catch up, and give you some stuff I have of yours.

Facelift silver/blue is a slightly different colour to pre-facelift silver/blue IIRC.

Same as the difference between facelift/pre-facelift white :)

Sound just like my set ;) However, mine are in the process of being changed from chipped off white, to spangly new white :)
I thought about polishing lip with dark centre but did that with old wheels, plus the lip is pretty small on these.

As you say though, Marty's do indeed look nice

Make sure you keep them polished weekly Marty otherwise they'll get ****ed in no time. Best to use a polish sealer like Belgom Alu.

I left my other set for a while without cleaning and had to wet flat them again to get rid of the tarnishing, then re-polish :(

marty_t3
29-06-2007, 17:06
Yeah they'll be getting polished regulary, i don't fancy having to do them over again

Finally got them back on the car, quite please with the way they've turned out if i do say so myself :D

We've got some arch rolling planned for this weekend then i can drop the ride height a little more at the front... oh, and finish painting the centre caps that i forgot about last time :wack:

They look really nice mate, if I ever re-do mine in a darker colour then it may well be worth me polishing up the lips, but against white it would look so-so I reckon.

had a looky through all ur pics and i think the best one is ur four legged friend 'de-cat' lol, Ur cars shaping up nicely, although im not sure if i would have polished ur wheels, gunna be a pain in the arse as ur going to have to polish them at least a couple of times a week to stop them oxidising, i know 'cos i made them same mistake on previous cars.
I love my s13 but if i had the chance to buy a minter like urs and start again i would, as theres many things i would do differantly, sometimes its better the devil u know, but i would have done exactly what uve done so far second time around, prob be slightly more eager to make it a manual though lol, keep up the good work

Well i've finally got round to starting on my auto-manual conversion.

I could have lived with the auto for a little longer but the box decided to munch itself back in October while i was on my way to Jon's Halloween party :annoyed: (leaving me stranded on the hard shoulder of the M62 dressed as an axe wielding, kilt wearing zombie :wack: ).

Well, new years eve seemed like as good a time to start as any ... so ...

Engine came out ...

http://www.t3retrocars.com/images/project/engineout.JPG

Engine got slapped with some degreaser before i set about it

http://www.t3retrocars.com/images/project/degreased.JPG

Had a look over the engine bay to see what needed doing while i've got the engine out.

Passenger side just needs degreased and hit with a few coats of paint and some underseal.

http://www.t3retrocars.com/images/project/baynearside.JPG

Driver side hasn't escaped the tin worm unfortunately so it'll need some sanding back and maybe a little welding before it gets painted and sealed.

http://www.t3retrocars.com/images/project/bayoffside.JPG

Now i just need to dig through the random piles of S13 parts i've got lying around to find a suitable clutch, flywheel, master cylinder, pedal assembly and all the other assorted gubbins i need (and cheers to Swebb and Lee for bringing me a decent manual box :notworthy ).
