View Full Version : What A Mess! = Rebuild time!
Just descovered that I have a project in my hands, but didnt realise the scale of things untill last week. Basically I was planning on replacing the offside rear quarter panel, cut out some rust in the other arch and respray the front bumper and maybe bonnet. But then I found this:
So it has lead to what is now a much bigger project, I have bought another shelll, plan to respray it all and then transfer EVERYTHING! so the strip down begins!

So that's been on its roof after a crash at some point?
What was it purported to be when you bought it?
I think that it happened early on in its life as it has quite extensive rust where the welds are. I think that its first owner crashed it, some dodgy garage rebuilt it, sold it to someone else, who probably didnt realise, then sold it to the bloke I bought it off, who I reckon knew it was bent but didnt realise untill he got it home or at least a couple of weeks later and wanted to flog it. It was priced quite low considering the millage, but stated that it needed the brakes replacing and could benefit a tidy up. I then bought it and after a few weeks noticed a slight rise in the paint in the pillar took the roof lining out and found that mess!

If it where me I would be looking for another shell. That is not the way to do it at all. I would strongly suggest thinking long and hard.

I think that's what he is planning to do mate :)
Looking forwards to this one  Get plenty of pics up :)
Yeah new shell has already been sourced! Ill keep it all up to date! Takes me back to when I restored my Austin Mini! :D

Saw the pics but didn't read the bottom line. The only way to go.
Right its been a long time since I decared war with the 200 but things are now finaly underway now that I have graduated and am jobless lol. Pretty much ready to remove the engine from the old shell, and doing prep work to the 'new' one. Keep on finding little bits that I tinker with so its been a bit slow, will get some more pics up soon. And hopfully now I have nothing else to do it should all move along quite quickly.
Right things have moved along a bit now, got the donar shell stripped down, and engine out of the bent one. Just preping things for the respray removing the front wondow has been the most challenging thing so far! And the sealent they use to keep the rain out is insainly hard to remove! Sorry havent kept up to date with this been here there and every where at the mo, hopefully will keep on top of things from now on. :sxoc:
A few more photos, started to clean up the shell ready for respray. Been looking at 'James's' rb26dett conversion and am sooo tempted to follow in a similar line, but looking further into it I decided to stick with the standard lump, get her up and running and use the bits off the redundent car to do it over time. 'Purplepower' is a lord i have to say, was looking through his project and I have to say its insperational and scary lol! :notworthy From the looks of things theres alot to convert, assemble and buy! a lack of hard cash is whats putting me off. Any ways heres what I have been up to this week.
Keep the update's coming with lots of pics
Heres whats coming next, clean the front up and rub down looks like it might take a bit of time given the amount of crap on it. Clean up under the arches. treat little rust spots on the roof. And redo the roof with p1200. Used p600 for the initial rub down.:) Thanks for looking, any coments welcome! :sxoc:

Is that on the exterior of the shell? It’s best to remove the pitting otherwise it will bubble through in a year or so ;)
yeah on the out side along the top of the roof. got 16 of the little bliters!

bilthamber Deox gel you'll be neededing! it'll shif tthe pitting :)
id personally just sand them out with 80 grit then fill the small area and sand back, would be only a very very small amount of filler and would be better as you will have totally removed the rust then
Its been a while since my last post, Since then I have rubbed the whole car down, Painted some of the engine, trated the bare metal, removed rust from up front, cleaned up inside the rear arches (which were covered with bits of left over rubber, thanks to the bloke who blew the engine) and have pondered alot. The sills are in a bit of a worse state then I had thought before, looks like the past owner has driven over a curb. In half a mind to cut the drivers side out and replace with the 'cut and shut' shells. Heres a few pics:
Have also started to tinker witht he lump, have bought a new crank pulley off of 'armracing' many thanks for that (should arrive tomorrow)
I took the manifold off with turbo attached, placed my nice new shiney one on the block to see what it looked like and its spanking!
Treated the whole thing with metal cleaner, slightly rubbed it down with wet and dry, then painted it (using a tiny tiny paint brush!), still have a bit to finish but you can see from the before and after pics that it looks sooo much better! Should look well nice once all the paints done and chromed manifold goes on! :)
Also looking at the dust from the clutch, its due replacment, so will be keeping me eye out for something decent, might even do the flywheel at the same time, not sure if it makes much difference to the power though. Might be worth it as I doubt ill have a chance to get at it with the gear box off.
Dont know why the pics are so small, work ok last time???
Today I changed the fule pump as the donar cars one had gone missing! So I removed the good working one fromt he bent shells fuel tank, and put it in th ered one.
When I located it on to its bracket it doesnt seem to sit very tight, IS THIS NORMAL?? i tryed many different things but came to the conclusion that it must be, any advise would be welcome. PLUS in the pic of the good fuel pump, is it all there, as I have never seen it before and do not know if it is intact.
I also went around filling a few spots and finishing off some rust removal.
The pits along the front roof were removed with and angle grinder and then some 180 grit wet and dry, I then treated them with 'Metal Ready' and covered them with stopper. Hopfully this should of done the job of getting rid of them. Just need to make sure I rub the roof down carfully as I do not want patches in the paint! :(
There was some cracking on the rear quarter panel where it looks like the back end went into some thing, as it has been filled and resprayed. Cracking formed in the filler and there was a slight crease in the panel I noticed so I amended that as best as pos.
Up the front all the rust has been removed (Although the pic looks rubbish!) It came up quite well considering. I have treated all the bare metal with Metal Ready, did quite a few coats to make sure it was all covered well. Planning on filling the front box section with Wax Oil and priming up any areas which need doing.
The build goes on, all the little bits seem to take up time and it seems as if Im never going to get there  but Ill keep going! :smash: I originaly wanted to have it finished by this time but its looking like a much longer job!
Once the engine bay is painted up I think it'll be more down hill!
That does indeed look like a beast of a project!
Keep it going- think about the first drive. i have just spent 1k+ on sorting sills on my s14. My pug 306 of the same year has no rust whatsoever..........

Pugs just don't rust... it's one of lifes little mysteries. Being French, I suspect their rust went on strike
Well sorry to disapoint! Ive got a 306 as well on an M reg, with 2 rust spots lol, one on the roof and other on the boot lid lol. Although it is only surface rust and it has spent most of its life nexct to the sea, so done pretty well i think!
Planning on filling the front box section with Wax Oil
My advice would be to stay well clear of Waxoyl - it's a total waste of time  I would use an alternative box section wax, there are other brands that actually work
Keep at it :) These builds take time but are always worth it in the end
Finished off repainting the engine, looks pretty nice now, pics below.
Its too cold at the moment to risk respraying the engine bay so thats on hold. Im doing this to cut costs a bit as i have a big list of bits I need to buy and money isn't my friend at the moment. lol. Planning on having the main body resprayed proffesionaly, maybe by Liphook coachworks or some other local firm.
Repainted the gear box as well, that looks really nice compared to what it was like!, shame you wont ever see it :(
Fitted the crank pulley, soaked the nut in anti rust solution for a week or so as it was a bit mig. Torqued it up to 110. Looks nice and clean... I wonder how long itll stay like that
Next job is replace the clutch, The min. is apparently 3mm from the rivets i had 1.4mm! So thats going to be replaced. Is it worth doing the flywheel while I have the engine out, would it make much different to the cars performance, not really clued up in this area.
I was thinking a LUK clutch from Apex, pretty much a standerd replacement.
We keep churning on, one day Ill get to drive it! I only drove it from my drive to the patio, should of taken it up the road to see what shes capable of. Might of inspired me to get amove on lol
:)
Stick with it- Looks like a really smart clean up job! I have spent the best part of 7 months rebuilding mine. The first time it turns over and fires up is such a good feeling! Best of luck!
So it continues, very very slowly though what with a new job taking up nearly all my time and a long distance relationship, dont get much time for the poor 200, but do what I can here and there. Mainly been rubbing every thing down. Spoke to a local spray shop who said 800 wet and dry would be required for my chosen colour, silver, so that means iv got to re do most things :( but I want to get a move on and get it ready for summer, which is just around the corner (hopefully) Some pics below.
Im removing the front head light washer jets as I think a nice flush bumper line will look really nice. Along with this, the bumper when I got the car was a bit tatty to say the last with holes and cracks here and there, was in 2 minds as to buy another one, but I thought Id see how a repair job goes first. Lots of filler, fiber glass and time later, its not to bad, the only problem is there is a crack in the middle of the bumper at the bottom, which wont stay put once fiber glassed so Im worried it'll move once the paint jobs been done it will reck its nice shiney coat. I hope not!
Also welded up teh rear arial hole and realocated it to the front centre of the roof, will get photos up soon.
Bought a new clutch, EBC should do the job I hope, not planning on running silly power so I think it should last.
On contemplation of removing the petrol tank, I gave up, I need to replace the brake line which runs above it, I think it can be done without the tank being removed, this will save quite a bit of time as well!! As for welding in the new sill, thats still to come and a wet wrag in the gas tank hole should do the job :wack:
Any way, Ill get a few more better pics up in the next week or so. Been slacking way too much, and seeing as my renewal email came through this week and I realised I've had it for a year now, I wasnt very impressed with my self :( Get a move on! lol famouse last words!
Forgot to mention I got this from santa this christmas, A lovely new shiney HKS Silent Hi Power cat back :D, cheers santa your da bomb!
Great work m8, cant wait to see what it looks like in silver.
Taken a few more pictures of the removal and refitting of the Ariel, I didn’t like the motorised metal pole, so have gone for a medium sized normal Ariel on the roof, much more to my liking! The flush rear looks good as well rather than having a metal pimple in it. Pics below explain all. Need to rub the filler down slightly better as I can feel a small number of rough patches in it, will prob wait to do this once I redo the whole car with 800 wet and dry.
I am going to invest in an electric sander, to speed things up and also to ensure that I don’t loose my mind slowly rubbing away into the foreseeable future. Any one got any suggestions as to what to go for? A belt or disc device?
Have taken a few more shots of the old shell, obviously with extra rust because its been sitting outside for a year now.
It shows how bent the roof is and how much filler was used to get it back up to window level. and yes that is a gapping gap into the car under the rear window! Pretty shocking that some one would even think about doing this let alone actually doing it!
The rear arch has extensive rust in it, god knows what the car has been through, I don’t really want to know. I think its been sitting for quite a while in a massive puddle by the look of things! Or at the bottom of the sea!
The hole, which has been cut into the rear arch, shows more filler, the plan was originally to cut the rust out and weld new stuff in but then I found the mayhem that lay beneath the roof lining! What a Mess!
:smash:

That is a lot of rust for a S14(a), what year is it. Although you are doing a very good job on it, keep it up

It on a T plate, 1999. It came from Scotland, but has probably spent most of its life outside around the back of some sketchy garage. The rust is extensive and is in quite a few other places. The engines only done 42k. confused is all i can say!
Good job mate! keep it coming!
my car came from glasgow an was rather rusty only had 46k on it when i got it dunno what they do to em up there lol
Well here we go again, I've probably done more work over the last weekend than I have over the last 3 months, Im too busy with other projects, VW Gold, Impreza, and R1 to name a few! :smash: But due to leaving the front end which I had cleaned up, it had some what deteriated from when I first did it back in November :annoyed: So here are a few pics of its revived state, and to be honest im glad I redid it as I think I've done a beter job this time.
Also been rubbing down other bits and bobs, the mirrors proved to be some what of a head ache not wanting to come appart until I realised you have to pull the glass out, thought it was screwed to the plastic, lol.
Pics below and hopefuly quite a few more to come soon as I have organised the engine bay to be sprayed soon. :wack: I hope
Got some primer on the engine bay at long last. Looks really good and am glad I put in the extra hours rubbing it down and then re rubbing just for good measure. The rust was a nightmare inicially, surface rust appeared on what I had originaly done, so I redid it but alot better to make sure it was gone for good, it looked pretty good once cleaned up.
Getting some satin black tomorrow so should hopfully have that on by next week!
Started to clean the front suspension which came off the red donar car and realised that they are not standard, Apex by the looks of things. There the same ride hight but a bit beefier, more coils at the bottom.
Does any one else run these springs do you know what difference they make to the handling etc etc??
Also the bearings in the tops are a little notchy, turn ok but have no play in them, where as the standard struts, the bearings spin freely very easily, but do have play in them.
Does any one know what should be right, I am wondering if the Apex ones have been over tightened when originaly put on the car??
They look the same springs that were on my car when I first got it. The rear shocks were knackered so didnt really have much of a feel of the rear of the car but the fronts were ok but the car was bouncy, felt like a standard car to be honest.
Went to get Satin paint today and they wanted £75 for a litre! No thank you! Apparently I have to buy half mat and half gloss!?!? I can unerstand why but I think some one is pulling my leg, there must be premade satin some where. I'm now trying to find another paint supplier, sharpish.
Got the engine bay sprayed up, only one problem, the bloke at the paint shop managed to forget the mat in my satin!:annoyed::clap: Seeing as its one of teh main things in satin I just am baffled at how he managed it!
So I now have one very glossy engine bay! Whether it will look any good im not sure, but it sure is shiney. It takes away some of the lines in the bay and seems to blend in all the curves and shape.
Im hoping that with a good looking rocker cover and nice chrome pipe work it will pull off a treat! fingers crossed. And on the up side, adds a bit of diferenciation into the equation!
Better pics to come these were taken at night under false light, dont show the true gleem!

That looks really good
Done some work to the front running gear, fitted the lower arm and shock today, went to put the hub on and ralised I had forgoten to recondition it  So I spent the rest of the day doing that for both sides.
The right hand side ball joint has a tear in the rubber, MOT failure Im thinking, does any one know whether you can replace just the ball joint or do you have to get the entier lower arm? Seen some nice Nismo lower arms but just for a bit of rubber its not really worth the £200 wanted for them.
Been up to a few bits, and figured out how to post BIG PICTURES! thanks to the help from a few members
To start off with replacing old with new...
Nice bent thread where the previous owner attemped to 'remove' the hubs for a 5 stud conversion on his 180sx and one ripped rubber
<a href="http://s163.photobucket.com/albums/t286/avinall/?action=view¤t=200tiesold.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t286/avinall/200tiesold.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
Nice new shiney ones
<a href="http://s163.photobucket.com/albums/t286/avinall/?action=view¤t=200ties.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t286/avinall/200ties.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
Cleaned up the remaining off side hub, strut and lower arm along with the nearside hub. They were quite rusty and the bolts on the lower arm a nightmare to remove!
<a href="http://s163.photobucket.com/albums/t286/avinall/?action=view¤t=200armrust.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t286/avinall/200armrust.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

<a href="http://s163.photobucket.com/albums/t286/avinall/?action=view¤t=200hub1.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t286/avinall/200hub1.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
Took a couple of weeks to dry as teh paint was layered on fairly thick after a good serving of rust deterrent.
<a href="http://s163.photobucket.com/albums/t286/avinall/?action=view¤t=hubarm.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t286/avinall/hubarm.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
Fitted the near side front hub, torqued every thing up, and managed to get the ball joint done up without any problems...
<a href="http://s163.photobucket.com/albums/t286/avinall/?action=view¤t=200hubon.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t286/avinall/200hubon.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
But the other side was a different matter, last bolt to tighten, the ball joint, and the sod started to turn just as it got slightly tight! It was stuck fast so out came the angle grinder!
Off it comes...
<a href="http://s163.photobucket.com/albums/t286/avinall/?action=view¤t=200huboff.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t286/avinall/200huboff.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

and the offending item!

Spent the next week cleaning the thread up on the ball joint, went and got a quote for the dye...£68 for the one! having a laugh so got 2 new nuts, retorqued the nearside, and managed to get the offside cleaned up enough the nut went gliding on and had no probs what so ever.
Put the steering rack and wheel back in, need to replace one of teh hydralic pipes as it was crushed by the pervious owner when removing the engine.
<a href="http://s163.photobucket.com/albums/t286/avinall/?action=view¤t=200steeringrack.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t286/avinall/200steeringrack.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Strapped the steering collum up, seems to have done the job for now.
Removed the clutch line due to it being cut by the perviouse bloke and Ive got a Hose Solutions braided line to put in.
<a href="http://s163.photobucket.com/albums/t286/avinall/?action=view¤t=200clutchpipe.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t286/avinall/200clutchpipe.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

And then.. I put the wheels on!
Finally got rid of the 4 stud hubs that the previose owner left on from his 180sx and got the originals back on, its taken a while, but Im pretty pleased with the quality of teh running gear, removed all rust and reconditioned most things where needed.
<a href="http://s163.photobucket.com/albums/t286/avinall/?action=view¤t=2004wheels4.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t286/avinall/2004wheels4.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

And a day later when every thing was finally back together, my ARB's turn up! :annoyed:
So they can wait until the shell is sprayed to be fitted.
<a href="http://s163.photobucket.com/albums/t286/avinall/?action=view¤t=200arbs-1.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t286/avinall/200arbs-1.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
Once that was done, got dad to start cutting the sill out of the old car to replace the dented one.

And on doing so... cut through the wiring loomb! DOH! :annoyed: :( So next job is to fix that!
Good work  make sure you torque the suspension up when it's sat at ride height though ;) Have a look in the manual for more info but it's pretty important
Good luck with the hose solutions braided clutch pipe, I bought one off them and it, was, well useless. So much so it's sat outside ready to go in the bin :(

Yeah a friend of mine said Id have to torque the ARB's up when it was at ride hight, so that was one of the reasons I was waiting to fit them. How come you have had troble fitting the hose? Surely can you not just send it back if its a manufacturing fault??
Also forgott to say I got my Apex type 1 FMIC, pipe work and smaller washer bottle. Didnt realise how big it was lol!

just found this project and loving it, well done so far, keep the updates inc!
The problem is that you can’t fasten the flexi pipe to the shell. This means the only thing supporting it is the hard pipe that runs from the clutch master cylinder. I got a Nismo braided line off Alanjuggler :notworthy This one has a slot in the end to enable it to be fastened to the shell – proper job ;) With regards to the hose solutions pipe, it’s not a manufacturing fault, it’s lack of attention to detail  I have to say it does my head in when you buy an “upgraded” part and the bottom line is, it’s a downgrade. Long term the movement in the hard pipe would work harden it and it would crack. This is the problem with buying “upgrades” they are often done on the cheap without any though into the design of them. I guess that’s why my S13 and S14a have very little mods.
I can’t see the point in trying to get my money back from hose solutions  at the end of the day, if they are not capable of making a simple pipe up with the relevant fitting at either end, then I can’t be arsed talking to them. I would rather just bin it than trying to have a long conversation on the phone with them explaining.
Apologies to rant on your thread, keep up the good work  tidy S14’s are becoming more and more rare :)
LOL no worries about the rant, I quite agree! Thanks for the heads up rather than letting me find out for myself. Will do some pondering on the subject...
Heres a pic of the damaged wiring loom which we had a 'little' accident

Will keep you posted! :)
Can't see why you need to fix a flexi pipe personally?
Anyhoo, looks like a fun job you have on the go mate, did a similar thing to a mates Skyline not long back, just without the repainting :)
Edit: Just re-read about the flexi pipe. Can't understand now there is any hard pipe involved. I thought the Hose solutions replacement goes between the master and slave cylinder and you bin the rest  The Nismo pipe leaves the crappy loop system in
Removed the damaged wiring loom section...fixing it up soon, not too bad i think to pach up.

Been revising for work and finaly had my exam so I can get back to the project...
Since my last post the old car has been moved to the bottom of the garden, after quite some effort, sinking in the mud, nearly rolling through the fence into next door garden and then getting stuck good and proper after trencial rain!
<a href="http://s163.photobucket.com/albums/t286/avinall/?action=view¤t=200garden.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t286/avinall/200garden.jpg" border="0" alt="bottom of garden"></a>

Finaly got it under cover made a quick roof up (the old rotten shed lol) so its not being blasted by the elements so much.
Got the damaged sill off the red car, to find that it was a bit of a mess in side, didnt really think it would be so rusty!
Think this was due to the previous owner drilling holes in it to secure the side skirts on with self tappers! :annoyed:

My jaw hit the ground!
1000000000 out of 10 for your work!
Had some time over xmas and new year so I got the other sill on the car, and then tidyed it up a bit.
<a href="http://s163.photobucket.com/albums/t286/avinall/?action=view¤t=sillon1jpg.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t286/avinall/sillon1jpg.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Rubbed down the near side door, this had been resprayed before, not very well I have to say and there were also a number of dinks from car doors
<a href="http://s163.photobucket.com/albums/t286/avinall/?action=view¤t=LHdoorjpg.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t286/avinall/LHdoorjpg.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Manage to tidy it up, filled the dinks, removed teh runny paint job and got rid of a few spots of corrosion along teh bottom of the door.
<a href="http://s163.photobucket.com/albums/t286/avinall/?action=view¤t=LHdoor3jpg.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t286/avinall/LHdoor3jpg.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Finally finished the door off in 800 wet and dry hopefully its good enough when I take it down the spray shop. I also finished rubbing the wing mirrors in 800 again, and did the door shut, 600 on the bits you won't see and 800 on the bits you will. And then popped the door back on.
<a href="http://s163.photobucket.com/albums/t286/avinall/?action=view¤t=LHdoor7jpg.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t286/avinall/LHdoor7jpg.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Heres whats coming next! Most of it as already been rubbed down in 600 so it shouldnt take too long, but i have a feeling that there are a few little niks which will need attention.

Bought a few items which have got things moving a bit faster... First off a sander, £19.99 B&Q jobby, and speeds up rubbing down so much, good buy in my books!

If you're going to the trouble of getting those bolts off, and clearly have the skills and a car off the road, surely you'd be better off just poly-bushing the subframe rather than fitting collars?
Excellent work btw :D
Got some z32 calipers, Look better and work better (I hope) than the standard s14's They have a slight mark where they caught the previous owners wheels. Cleaned them up, there in good nick and bolted them on to see how things went...perfect! Just got to remove one of the snapped lines and fit the braided lines.

You reckon, I kind of when with the cheaper option, but I did ponder with teh idea, any ideas how much it would cost?? I'll do a quick search, who do you recomend??
Went to clean the bonnet up and prep it for spraying, went to clean the underside up where there was a bit of rust and came across this...
<a href="http://s163.photobucket.com/albums/t286/avinall/?action=view¤t=090308_110935.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t286/avinall/090308_110935.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
<a href="http://s163.photobucket.com/albums/t286/avinall/?action=view¤t=090308_110917.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t286/avinall/090308_110917.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
Which then turned into this after attacking it with teh grinder..
<a href="http://s163.photobucket.com/albums/t286/avinall/?action=view¤t=090308_112952.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t286/avinall/090308_112952.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
So it had to come out!
<a href="http://s163.photobucket.com/albums/t286/avinall/?action=view¤t=090308_115850.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t286/avinall/090308_115850.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
Made a new plate up and bobs your uncle, still got a bit of work to do to teh weld but its nearly there, dont have an up to date pic though, Unfortunatly I set fire to the rubber stripp which runs along the end of teh bonnet, which bubbled the paint work on the other side! :annoyed: but it had to be rubbed down any ways so not to worry :smash:
<a href="http://s163.photobucket.com/albums/t286/avinall/?action=view¤t=090314_095759.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t286/avinall/090314_095759.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
Only problem is Ive got to remove these lovely looking nuts to fit them...
My advice - blow torch on full bore. Heat the nuts so they expand but the studs don't. Then crack em. The WD you have soaked them in will also help. It will vaporise helping lubrication. You can’t fanny about doing this – you have to be pretty quick but from my experience it’s the best way. Hope this helps you and good luck
Finally Finished the sill, its taken ages, but Ive finally got it to a happy standard! :)

Got the blacked out windows out which I got with the donar shell, cleaned them up, and going to sell them soon, so keep your eyes peeled if your ater a set of dark glass, its a bit too pimp for my liking.
<a href="http://s163.photobucket.com/albums/t286/avinall/?action=view¤t=090328_125434.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t286/avinall/090328_125434.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
Doing a bit more, now that summer is here and its a bit warmer. First off managed to get some under coat on the replaced sill, around the rear o/s arch and rear end, among other places where rust used to be hiding.
<a href="http://s163.photobucket.com/albums/t286/avinall/?action=view¤t=090414_121500.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t286/avinall/090414_121500.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Then popped teh wheels back on and took its out side for some fresh air!

Did some work on the bonnet, from where it was welded the paint blistered and peeled off on the upper side so I removed all the damaged bits and filled it. Also gave the under side a coat of primer.

Decided that the rear calipers I attempted to refurb a year ago are beyond redemption, and the other set I have were knackered. So sourced some second hand ones, which came with new pistons and rubbers, thanks to Sean! Managed to get one side done, just need to do the other and then get some paint on them.

May be taking a long time but the job is looking excellent and well worth the effort.
Well done for the effort on this, looks like a huge task!
Made a start by fitting the reconditioned 300zx calipers, new hard lines and goodridge braided hoses.

.
Is it me or should those be flexi lines as they move when steering???
Is it me or should those be flexi lines as they move when steering???
look at the way the caliper bolts up.. its only the part with the flexi hose that moves... besides on a standard car that part is solid also and where he has fitted the flexi would be rubber
Wey Hey! After my topic was closed due to inactivity - shows you how long its been! The kind admin team re opened it!
Watch this space, I'll be updating very soon with pics of the lastest progress, all be it 2 years 6 months later down the line! (Buying a house put a stop to every thing! - that was anoter project all together!!)
Oh and I spotted a thread called 'the longest rebuild thread ever' - Dont mean to poke fun but I think Ive got a few months on ya! hehehe :-P
Just read this back to back... dont be long with that update mate! ;)
Since my last up load Ive gone through a phone or two so most of the other photos I will have to dig out of the cupboard. But to bring you up to speed with the current state of play:
The rear inner sills which include a thread to take the subframe brakets were rotten. Took a while but dad fabricated some new ones (as you do) and welded them in, only have a pic of the finished article but will try to find some 'in progress' shots later!

http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t286/avinall/200SX%20FINISHING/IMAG0101.jpg
After the welding was finished off got some paint on the bottom, satin black, re fitted the fule tank, break lines and fule lines. The fule lines were corroded near the ends so replaced the manky bit with braided lines.

http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t286/avinall/200SX%20FINISHING/IMAG0266.jpg
I also needed a replacement steering rack pipe, no one could fabricate one up as its a funny sized pipe, so went to Nissan who informed me there were none in the country, nor Europe so had to wait for it to turn up from Japan! So I had to wait 7 weeks! lol
Just gt to watch it when putting the gear box back in as this is how the last owner bent the old one.
http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t286/avinall/200SX%20FINISHING/IMAG0267.jpg
You can also see that the ABR's are now in place but no 100% properly fitted, I'll wait until last minute to sort them out once its back together.
Well after saying Id up date things back in January, I finally got around to doing some thing today...
Got a few more heat shields fitted, the hand brake cables and sprayed inside black where you would of been able to see red .... (hopefully the car will be silver one day!)

http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t286/avinall/IMAG0722.jpg
Also sorted the gear box so its near enough to being fitted back onto the car. Replaced a seal, and had a general tidy up.

Does any one know what this is for? I know it sits on the floor behind the hand brake, but not sure what its purpose is?
Cheers :)

That's cool to know, I think I've cracked which ones which, the original is in better condition anyway so it should all be the same :)
Got it back on the ground ready for the rear sub frame to be fitted...
http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t286/avinall/IMAG0732.jpg
Put the rear sub frame back on, went straight on which is good considering the welding which was done to fix the nuts in the body which sheered off. Looks nice and clean now :)

I needed one of the hub nuts off the old car, which has been sat at the bottom of the garden for quite a few years now, the rust on the shell is imense! My camera diesd so net time I'll take a few shots. Luckily the hub nut had been covered up so looked nice and shiney. After trying to lock the 5 stucd up with a metal bar and bending them w decided to put a wheel on pop it on the floor and try again. Cracked off after I put all my weight onto the breaker bar, which ended up with me nutting the wooden post! Bloody hurt! but did the job :D Apparently these are torqued up to nearly 200nm!

It was finally time to get some paint on the car! I've been thinking long and hard about what colour to have... for nearly 4 years in fact. I had a good idea so went along to the spray shop and ended up choosing something completely different lol.
I had to get the panels on and prepped as best as I could, unfortunately the front bumper had been squashed over the years so didn't fit properly.
The spray shop I used is called Firm FX near Farnham and I cant praise Chris's work enough, he sorted all my dodgy rubbing down, filling and welding... even fix the front bumper!!

Next job was to chuck the engine back in after fitting the gearbox...
Cleaned the engine mounts up as well and replaced the gearbox mount.

All windows in, roof ariel fitted, interior fitted, engine pullies, belts, fan fitted. Radiator in with new hoses, type 1 FMIC fitted and probably some other bits...

Today I picked up a second hand sports cat which means I can now fit the rest of the exhaust.
Need to sort out the legal stuff with the DVLA and Im nearly there! I never thought Id see the other end of this at some times... little bits here and there and we've got there!
Top thread  good on you for not giving up!!
What a read!!! well done so far mate, keep it up, teh end is in sight....
Today was inspection day at the DVLA.... well it never happened!
Long story short, been toing and frowing with various people at the DVLA about which number plate the car should be registered under, so far someone at their offices said the original T plate, then it changed to a Q plate (due to replacing the chassis with a non new from factory item), then later changing their minds to a P plate (the donor car, and basically said the donor car has had an engine swap from the T plate!)
They did want to inspect the car today but we went to pick up a trailer yesterday, needing a big one as the cars over 14 ft we turned up in a Gold TDi and the rental company wouldn't allow us to have it saying the car was underpowered. Therefore after a brief call to the DVLA it was decided to scrap the inspection and go ahead with the change of engine number on the red donor car. Problem solved, shame its gone from a T to a P reg car but at least its not a Q plate which would of been rubbish.
After fitting both clutch master cylinders from the original and donor car, one leaked and the other wouldn't bleed up properly I then bought a 2nd hand one off ebay. Fitted it quickly and it bled up really well. Clutch is really light and the bites not too harsh considering I removed the hard pipe, only having a flexi straight to the slave cylinder.
Whilst under the car I noticed a small amount of hydraulic fluid from the power steering pipe so need to address that.

I fitted the centre console but have a wire which is left over....Does anyone know what it is for? Being yellow I kind of thought it was either airbag or alarm related or am I wrong here?

Thanks very much mate! :)

Yeah looking forward to taking it around the block, from moving it around the drive it feels like a brand new car, light clutch sharp brakes etc, hopefully all the bush upgrades will count towards some thing.
Now the legalities have been sorted with the DVLA its time to wave good bye to the original blue car. Shame to see it go like this but it wasn't safe for anyone to drive.... plus we did do a good job of borrowing bits off it :D

Well another year and a half has past.... and low and behold its finally on the road!!!!
I think that makes a total of 8 and a half years from buying it, rebuilding it and driving it for the first time ever!
I've had a spare 4 weeks so thought I'd go all out on the 200.. I sold my Impreza RA to fund things :( but it was need to be done. It went for an MOT and passed with flying colours, so my dad used it here and there for a week to make sure nothing major went wrong!
And for me there's no better maiden voyage than a 150 mile trip to Devon... all was fin until 50 miles down the road my front n/s tyre blew out, (one of the only things I hadn't replaced, typical!)
So I did the remaining 100 miles with the space saver on, at 50mph... so annoying but I just wanted to get home. I had every possible spare in the boot and back which didnt help matters, lucky the Mrs was there to lend a hand and take some of the crap with her!

So I treated it to some Bridgestone S02'S this week.
There's still some fine tuning to be done, like side skirts, splitter and some niggly little issues, plus the PAS pulley jammed up today so I've got to sort that as well...
Fixed up and fitted the front splitter, it has a crack in the center so I made up a bracket to hold it steady.
http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t286/avinall/200SX%20FINISHING/20150325_145904_zpsvoemgeyn.jpg (http://s163.photobucket.com/user/avinall/media/200SX%20FINISHING/20150325_145904_zpsvoemgeyn.jpg.html)

Next is the side skirts, the only problem I have is that the rear holes have been filled in plus I don't have any of the original fixings (centre or bottom) to hand... a bit stuck on what to do, I did wonder whether I could use mastic to hold them on??
Any one else had this issue?
