figured id start this in ere as there will be a lot of photos and it will probs end up in here anyways.

lots has happened to my car in the last year which has gotten me to this:
http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/P4140051.jpg

with this spec:

k&n air filter
apex group buy fmic
xspower manifold and elbow
3 inch exhaust system
ca16 inlet cam
ka24 60mm tb
440cc injectors
.64 gt28rs
wiesco +1mm forged pistons
1.6mm metal head gasket
rb20 afm
ocho map
walbro fuel pump
z32 fuel filter

Boost
1.3 bar on avcr but averaged at 1.2 on rr.

due to my big ends going again!:annoyed: ive pulled the engine back out for another rebuild with more added goodness and powah!

so we started at nine o clock this evening with this
http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/P5160006.jpg
http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/P5160007.jpg

and an hour and a half later we had this

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/P5160018.jpg
http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/P5160019.jpg

and the obligatory

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/P5160020.jpg

:wack:

we only had one hic up with the removal which was this
http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/P5160016.jpg
:annoyed:

and after much fannying about we decided that the gear knob wasnt going to come off:no: so i let james loose with a sharp pointy implement and this happened
http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/P5160017.jpg
but hey at least its out:nod:

will update this as i go with what im doing and pictures of what ive already done:D

another day and more pictures

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/P5180001.jpg

flywheel and clutch have quite a lot of heat marks on them:(:( i know the fly can be skimmed but can the cover be skimmed?? also will a skim help me here or do i need to do something else?

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/P5180002.jpg

more tales of woe:(

it seems ive smashed the key on the crank :eek:

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/P5220003.jpg
thats where whats below is supposed to sit.........except the bit below is only half of it:wack:

Fake Ben Taylor
23-05-2007, 16:20
more woe:cry:

the big ends seem to be absolutely fine so i think danny was right and the knocking i could hear was the front pulley:rolleyes:

however there is some det damage to the sides of the pistons so i think i may need to buy some new ones:cry:

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/P5230009.jpg
http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/P5230008.jpg

its pitted below the surface but above the top ring and jammed the ring in place. interestingly its only doe it on two pistons and the other two though have a couple of marks are probably ok:annoyed: the two that are ok (2&3) also had the best coloured plugs whereas 1&4 were REALLY black:confused:

evidence of the overfuelling:

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/P5230003.jpg
http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/P5230001-1.jpg

and how i left the workshop when i came to post these pictures:

james and i stripped the engine bay ready for seam welding and re painting in the morning:nod:
http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/P6230012.jpg

and whilst he did most of that i practised head work on a scrap head with my new grinding burrs.......this took about 1minute :wack:

Fake Ben Taylor
24-06-2007, 03:22
im using them on recommendation from danny and by heck they work

glad i have a spare junk head to practise on though as its very easy to take too much out

also have a standard abrasives porting and polishing kit to tidy everything up afer wards:nod:

Fake Ben Taylor

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/image-upload-62-710151.jpg

ive since turned down the wire speed but my welding is definately improving:) its not fantasticly neat but itll certainly do the job:nod:

Fake Ben Taylor
24-06-2007, 18:04
That flywheel looks F*^$ed. Too much cracking to be skimmed and I would defo change the pistons, might as well fit forged while it's apart. More boost that way safely. Don't take too much meat out of the combustion chamber area though or you'll lower the compression ratio too much. Looking like a good project overall mate. Good luck with the rest of it.

they WERE forged pistons;)

im also planning to lower the cr by removing material from the chamber:nod:

still hungover then :wack: mr shaky hands strikes again wooo :D :D :D

sssssshhhhhhhh;)

but yes:hurl: :wack:

not bad there ben

cheers matey:D

Fake Ben Taylor

these are the rails that bolt to the under side of the seat
http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/DSC00279.jpg

and then i drilled and tapped the bottom box section so that the seat is removeable:)
http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/DSC00280.jpg

just need to clean it all up and paint it then its job done:D and all for the cost of £0 the seat was free from garf :notworthy: and the box section and plate i had lying around spare from other jobs

Fake Ben Taylor

my brother finished of the seam welding in the engine bay as it needed plating half way along due to the seam being rotten:(
http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/DSC00283.jpg

he is a far better welder than i am:)

also whilst he did that i masked off and sprayed my rear polycarb window. done it white as kev had problems with his getting too hot when painted black:(

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/DSC00284.jpg
http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/DSC00285.jpg
http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/DSC00286.jpg

and engine bay coated in degreaser:nod: just waiting on that working its way in and then ill hose it down, dry it off and paint it:D:D:D

BIG thanks to carl today who came round at 930pm and didnt get home till 3am after he helped me get the engine physically in the bay :notworthy:

we had a few troubles with missing tools, needing to change the elbow and replacing cut pipes but in the end we got it in the bay

just need to torque up all the mounting bolts and then start adding intercooler and afm etc and connecting the electrics.

im severely tempted to get the soldering iron out and move the fuse boxes as i love the look of the engine bay at the minute with them way out the way

only pic of lump in place

cheers matey
steve

Fake Ben Taylor
09-08-2007, 14:17
got creative myself with it :) got a sheet of lexan for £40 and then cut it to shape and sealed with sikaflex and rivetted it on:)

it doesnt look as good as brens and was a little harder but im happy with it for what it cost :)

Fake Ben Taylor
09-08-2007, 17:51

engine bay now stands like this
http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/image-upload-25-736438.jpg

all thats left to do is to put the radiator in, attatch the gearbox subframe and connect up some power:nod: it should be on the road soon:D :D

also im moving the fuse boxes behind the strut towers out of the way which is why the last few leccy connections arent connected:nod:

gratuitous black cooler and pipework pic just cos i can and i love it :D :D :D

tacked it all roughly in place for now and going to get someone who knows how to tig to tig it all up but heres what it looks like at the minute.......unfortunately its clashing with the intake pipework on the drivers side so its not gonna be as deep:( (course i wouldnt have this problem if the welder had finished my manifold )

Gutted for you mate
I take it you are going to get your money back?

ive pm'd him asking for money back :)

ive asked for the full 300 and i give him the engine back or 200 back and i keep the engine which i think is fair:)

You're joking? :indiff: They gone in a bad way or is it something the seller could of missed?

Smiley, think it would be easier to replace the bearings on the engine rather than take it back out and send it back :annoyed:

theyve gone in a big way:(:(

on a lighter note i had a mobile tyre fitter come round this morning (strangely called bens tyres :wack:) can highly recommend him for fitting slicks or doing tyre swaps....£6 per tyre including balancing and valves and he comes to your door :D

anyway pics of new wheels

its not off topic dude:)

but i havent actually tried em yet :( jesus-ninja highly rates them as does someones whos opinion steve carter trusts so that was enough for me to give em a go :)

damo

if the gap was a little further forward and mebe not as deep by a few mm it would be fine :) although as i say with a little bit of time this one would be fine :) it needs trimming underneath which would stop it catching the throttle pulley and the rattle is prob that as well then it just need a little more filler and spraying properly

Damo
16-09-2007, 12:42
cool. thanks for all the info and good luck getting the 13 up and running. i will be keeping an eye on your thread ;)

I'll keep an eye on the thread now and dont forget the aero mods mate

:  ive a few ideas for aero mostly from our discussion :D but yeah ill keep this updated as they happen

bought a few bits on flea bay and though they havent quite arrived yet im excited and garf wanted an update!

bought a toyota supra manual 5 speed gearbox (r154) that is rated to be a bit stronger than the rb/vg box :D going to vut and shut the bell housings to make it fit same as birdy did for the vg box conversion
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=270171024670&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=017

also won an ohlins suspension set up:cool: only spring rates offered by ohlins for the s13 are 8/6 so thats what theyll be, so should be perfectly fine for hard track use with the right dampening and arb set up:nod:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=280159936265&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=018

also just won a holset hx35 turbo which should see 500hp quite easily and im hoping with quite minimal spool times, the turbine wheels are sized to be an ideal stage 4 garret t3 wheel if such a thing existed so should be ok
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=010&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&viewitem=&item=200162528133&rd=1
the biggest issue with it is that the exhaust housings are laible to crack and fail as theyre designed for diesels and cant take petrol egts:( however this new turbine housing cures that issue :D:cool:
http://www.theturbotrader.com/product_info.php?cPath=49_22_25&products_id=36

also bought some rear z32 calipers which will soon be mated to dans rear big brake kit once he pulls his finger out:whip: :p

the bottom end is also now at angel works having everything balanced, bores bored and honed to fit pistons, block skimmed if its needed, looking into a second keyway in the crank to avoid the issues i ad with the last engine and also getting the oil drains drilled out to 8mm which helps the oil drain from the head at high rpm which will reduce the risk of be failure due to oil starvation. its a big thing in the rb scene and the ca suffers the same issue:(

well once block is done i need gasket set, bearings and an oil pump then the car can go back on the road :) then its a case of finishing my inlet, fabricating a downpipe for the turbo, to go for 350 area horsies and then i need solid lifters and the angelworks headwork grp buy to happen and i can start to aim for huge numbers  also going to get vems in near future, probably just after xmas :)

i honestly honestly think you should sell your big :ghey: truck turbo, cast iron HKS manifold, external wastegate if you already bought one (cant recallif you did or not) and then either buy a 0.86 2871R or damos TD06 20G kit

pricewise the 2871 will be 599 and damo's is 1000 but you can sell your exhaust to get a little money back, and you will save money by not having to make a new exhaust downpipe and intercooler pipework + is your intercooler big enough for your power goals? you may need slightly thicker, as far as im aware the normal thickness ones are good for about 500bhp, + you could daefinately do with water injection (although i think you want this anyway which i agree is a good plan )

also at very high HP figures i dont know if your diff will cope or not on track, jez found even the s15 diff wasnt really up to it and has decided to go for a 1.5way diff i think

another thing to worry about with that much power is how its delivered, is it going to be controllable if your exiting and a corner and want to put the power down or will you have to wait till your 100% straight, clench your butt cheeks, pray to god then put you foot down :wack:

im not sure what the fastest car youve been in would be  but try and imagine how fast a lightweight S13 would be with 400-450bhp  it wont be slow let me tell you that :wack:

the final most important reason you should buy damos turbo kit is to stop me from getting it, its EXACTLY what i want for mine but in about a years time and not before, so either you buy it , i buy it  or everytime somebody is interested in it we put them off with made up stories of how its knackered and its only worth its weight in scrap metal so nobody buys it for a year then i can have it :D

ANYWAY. . . . this wasnt meant as a dig at your project and probably wont make you change your mind :smash: but just a few things to consider, its going to be immense whichever way you do it but you dont want to end up with a track only car you really want to be able to hoon it around like a madnam on the road aswell and dont forget roads arent as grippy or smooth as proper tracks and they also have inconsiderate people coming towards you on the same road

p.s. get the damn thing built and get on some blooming trackdays, the only real reason to have the car is for fun and when its off the road the fun factor is greatly reduced, it took me a few years but id rather have a low power S13 and take it to trackdays and have a great time instead of constantly trying to reach the ever moving finish line. upcoming trackdays to aim for are

jan 5th elvington (you never know a christmas miracle could happen)
feb 8th oulton park
feb 9th elvington
feb 24th rockingham
feb 27th donington

will be hoping to do at least 2 maybe 3 of the above

huge truck turbo for the win :D:D:D on the road itll only be 400 - 450hp :) and then wound up for track  i agree the diff is probably a weak point but itll survive a while befre i can afford a decent 1.5 or 2 way:nod: water injection will be bought at some time

also ive come to far to just sell up now.....it will be built and shouldnt be laggy due to the divided exhaust housing which should hopefully mean quite a smooth delivery :D

Keeping an eye on this Supra box modding ;) (if you had the choice between the mk3 Supra box and the Z32, what would you choose?)

i did choose ;)

they both need the same amount of work to fit tbh so it makes no odds really, the supra box is shorter so shifter position may be an issue but i can get round that :) also the supra box requires a custom clutch whereas the z32 one will fit any ca clutch. the supra one is supposed to be a bit stronger but the z32 will handle any ca built yet tbh

for me it came down to price....a good condition z32 is around £500 whereas my r154 was £175 :)

hi jj :wave::)

well another busy weekend - started off 6am saturday morning with a drive to liverpool for a go kart race - first time ever on outdoor twin engined karts and managed 10th out of 42 with everyone in front of me being heavily experienced and many were ex formula ford/renault drivers......the lad who came 6th is currently in the semi finals to win a scholarship in the clio cup  so as you can imagine i was extremely happy :D:

then got home from that to have to drive straight to northampton :( big thanks :notworthy: to kiz for letting me pretty much gatecrash his house so i had somewhere to kip  much appreciated mate :)

sunday was then a tour of the midlands collecting everything but i now have a std gearbox to cut up, the bottom end back and my vems ecu system:D:D:D thanks to danny for giving up his sunday to show me the way and to give me my engine

the weekend was then rounded off with taladega nights and take away at the g'mans new pad and i finally got home at midnight last night needing mucho sleep to be at work for 6 this morning :(:(:(

Ben has asked me to update on the project, because he is away all week having an adult relationship with Danny, and doesnt have access to the internet.

Today ben and danny, and with support from myself and kiz (we just fked about trying to wind up ben and danny), have completely dismantled the front end, pictures will follow from ben when he gets access and one includes ben having mucho fun with an angle grinder, i think he made a little sex wee when playing with it. Engine out of shell, and all hubs removed by the time i left at about 7pm.

i have just one picture of today:
http://img166.imageshack.us/img166/722/24022008179se5.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Kiz loving bens engine and gearbox.

Ben also managed to drop the front upright, and wheel on his bad toe, and proceeded to hop around the workshop crying and moaning like a little girl for the next half an hour.

also just spoken to ben, danny had also managed to drop the rear subframe on bens foot. Not just that, danny even managed to put the jack straight through the sill and up into the car, i believe pictures will follow.

was a good laugh today, once you got round the constant bitching at each other from danny and ben, i see a civil ceremony looming. So im sure there will be another update at some point this week, with loads of pictures.

Wasn't me who put the jack through the sill, I used a jacking point :wack: we did manage to make a pile of rust like you'd never believe was possible, and prove the shell is way beyond repair. If you lift the back bumper , the shell is so bendy the drivers seat moves

well kiz bought a fancy new laptop so i can update but no pics:(

new shell has been gutted and all seams in the engine bay stripped back and welded, new cage has been fitted and dash/door cards trimmed to suit though i now have a nightmare with the wiring trying to remember where everything went and also now the heaters dont line up:( i also stripped out all the aircon unit from under the dash, weve welded in a new rear strut brace and i committed offset suicide by fitting chargespeed wide rear wings and now need 2inch spacers :wack:

doesnt sound a lot but a LOT has happened and its been hard, were having a night off tonight as danny and i are both car'd out :wack:

i must say a MASSIVE MEGA EPIC HUGE thank you to sideways danny who has given up every night since last friday to help me with this and also let me fill his workshop with crap. without his help this wouldnt really have been possible so

http://img182.imageshack.us/img182/5254/29022008206bp1.jpg

And then finally danny turned up and managed to set fire to the floor, yep, out comes the fire extinguisher because it was a big fire involving lots of petrol, aftermath after the quick thinking of ben to use the extinguisher, just one problem, we also got extinguished,

ben has loads more pictures thoughout the week of the work he's done, its coming on nice, loads more to do, but its getting there.

how did you set fire to the thing :smash:

there was a small fire on the floor under the car (an inch square), ben kicked the fuel lines which were a foot or so away to get them clear and some fuel spilled out, big fire :wack: and I was in the bay with nowhere to go so ben decided to cover me in powder extinguisher

Sideways Danny
01-03-2008, 20:28
hahaha fpmsl :D:D

at least you had the wits to have a fire extinguisher near by tho  just be careful of the other 50 or so litres thats in the fuel tank or was when it left me :wack:

hows the welding coming along

welding would have been finished but the whole village had a power cut for about 2 hours so need to do it tomorrow now, not much to do on that front really. Ben needs to fit up the suspension to the front and do some painting of the welded areas and it can be loaded back onto his trailer for him to take home. it's looking quite proper and there will be a LOT more pictures up in the next couple of days

well i made it back safe and sound:D:D:D:D:D

no pics uploaded yet but they are on their way ;) car looks a bit of a mess at the moment but there is lots to do yet.

however we managed a full shell swap, new cage fitting, and seam welded the engine bay and welded in the new strut brace and fitted my wide wings :D

interestingly a bare s13 shell (no interior except dash, no subframes or arms of any kind and no engine or rad etc) weighs 0.44 tons:eek::eek: and goldilocks and i managed to haul that onto a trailer using nothing but brute stupidity....i mean strength :wack: i did get £48 for the shell though at the metal recyclers:D

:rolleyes::p

danny how do you fancy weekend of 14th march to finish up welding?:) lee is going to see if hes available same weekend to help me with the wiring :notworthy:D

also danny ive got a loom sorted that i need you to pick up for me as n8rsd has it and you need to drop a head off at zarcs;)

just as a teaser pic my new air filter arrived today :)

right then the shell swap!

started off with my old shell being trailered down to sideways dannys barn/workshop
http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/P1010011.jpg

and then we stripped it down
http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/P1010014.jpg

ooh erm i wasnt doing anything........
http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/P1010015.jpg

my favourite part of the week!
http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/P1010017.jpg
http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/P1010018.jpg
http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/P1010019.jpg

kiz enjoying my recaro a little too much
http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/P1010021.jpg

engine had to come out which meant removing the gearbox drain plug for the very first time......turns out itd had a hard life as not only was there all this fur but several large lumps also came out
http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/P1010024.jpg

then engine out so time for ghey pic
http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/P1010025.jpg

then the rest of the front end comes off
http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/P1010027.jpg
http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/P1010028.jpg

Fake Ben Taylor
08-03-2008, 22:18
then we had a little accident.........and also discovered how rusty my shell really was!
http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/P1010029.jpg
http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/P1010030.jpg
http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/P1010031.jpg

so anyway after that it was time to get the rear subframe off and grab the bits i needed from it
http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/P1010033.jpg

then hammer time
http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/P1010034.jpg

and the left over pile of bits
http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/P1010036.jpg

next day was a long drive for me from northampton to norfolk to get the new shell (mucho thanks to lee for helping me bolt everything up!)

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/P1010037.jpg
http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/P1010041.jpg
http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/P1010042.jpg

then danny and i had to apply some MAN and drag a half ton shell onto the car trailer so i could take it to the metal recyclers

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/P1010043.jpg
http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/P1010044.jpg

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/P1010049.jpg

then the new shell came in to be stripped of looking beautiful for a lot of welding

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/P1010051.jpg
http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/P1010053.jpg

taped on wide rear arches
http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/P1010054.jpg

cage propped in for photos sake
http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/P1010057.jpg

then i got busy with an angle grinder so that it was ready for when danny got back to weld

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/P1010058.jpg
http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/P1010059.jpg

and welded
http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/P1010062.jpg
http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/P1010067.jpg

Fake Ben Taylor

then the cage had to go in properly and boy was it a poor fit!
http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/P1010060.jpg

and i had to see what this looked like
http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/P1010065.jpg

rear strut brace welded in
http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/P1010069.jpg

and then i fitted my 4inch intercooler but forgot to take pics except the on byebye posted earlier

http://img509.imageshack.us/img509/5937/29022008193nu5.jpg
http://img337.imageshack.us/img337/2963/29022008198mt6.jpg
http://img205.imageshack.us/img205/1985/29022008190ea3.jpg

as you can see from the last pic its sat on a nice bit of inch box section which should help stiffen up the front end

then lots of trim hacking so it fitted round the cage
http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/P1010071.jpg

also started to remove the rear seat supports to allow access for seam welding there, sadly we lost power on the last night of work we had available and as such we didnt get it finished:(

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/P1010084.jpg

the last saturday of the week was a mega depressing one for me as it was time for the shell to go to the metal recyclers :(

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/P1010077.jpg
http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/P1010078.jpg

though it turns out it weighed half a ton so i got £48 for it:D

then on the sunday we had a mad rush to get everything packed up so i could go home:(
http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/P1010083.jpg
http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/P1010085.jpg

and back home where it is to come back to pieces to have a bit more welding done and the bushes fitted along with some btm arm modifications ;)

* quite a major update *

well the whole engine build and box conversion has been held up by the clutch (or lack there of)

my first hopes were to use a dw flywheel with an rps max puck but with the splines changed to the pattern of the toyota gearbox. rps had said this wasnt a problem but then when it came to ordering said it wasnt possible  this put a major halt on the entire build :(

however! its now resolved (fingers crossed and hugging large piece of wood:wack:)

ive ordered a custom flywheel from ttv racing which is costing £210 (cheaper than both the apex one and the dw one i might add ;)) and a twin plate rally spec clutch from super clutch.

the guys at super clutch have been so helpful and have offered loads of advice in emails and countless phone calls ensuring i get the right clutch for the job and for what i want to do. i cant recommend them enough!!! the rally spec clutch has really thick friction material to handle those of us ith less mechanical sympathy and should be a good all rounder for drag and track work :) and if that proves to not be enough then using the same cage i can fit three plates with slightly thinner friction material for not a lot of cost at all  this is actually the same clutch type norris designs runs on their evo so should be more than capable (he runs the triple set up).

pic of the cluch (or how it should look)

the clutch has arrived:D:D:D:D

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/clutch2.jpg

and a pic of the friction surface
http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/clutch3.jpg

one of the black plates has a spacer machined into it so the way another plate is added is to remove said black plate and replace with a another friction disc and thin spacer plate  so easy even kieran would be able to do it:nod::nod::D

they even sent some super clutch sweets :D
http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o76/jrtuning_ben/clutch1.jpg

sadly its going to be another week till ttv have my flywheel ready :(:( but after that the whhole bottom end balancing etc can go ahead :D

if your mig'in it you'll prob find that you can't weld it all the way round as it gets too hot, especially on the inside of the tight bends, so you have to do an inch at a time or so and its the joining of the welds that leak. grind it back 5mm or so and crack on over the top of where you stopped last time, if that makes sence

be worth fabing some end caps up to pressure test the pipe, i just made up two straight bits of pipe with a flat bit on't end, a bolt welded on with a hole drilled throught it to join on the airline with a bit of fuel line, join them with your silicone hose and dunk under water and check for leaks

should be ok with the tig though...;)

Right then, as ive been handed these burr riden things, i will detail my contribution to the superior 200sx.

As i picked them up from Ben's.
http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u230/sxistevo/DSC00490.jpg

Numbered and marked for position as was given strict instructions to NOT MOVE ::).
http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u230/sxistevo/DSC00491.jpg

;D Ben you aint gonna like these as undid all your hard work :D. Enjoyed it tho.
http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u230/sxistevo/DSC00492.jpg

Some serious Burrs, i don't know what you used to cut this but would of said a bread knife, lol. Shall we say it was rather sharp in places.
http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u230/sxistevo/DSC00493.jpg

Burr's again
http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u230/sxistevo/DSC00494.jpg

After a bit of TLC with a grinder & file. Simply used grinder to remove all the rought parts and filed the inside to ensure nice clean and burr free points of contact during welding.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u230/sxistevo/DSC00495.jpg

All done well one anyway
http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u230/sxistevo/DSC00496.jpg

Up to date for the information of Ben and the rest of ya common folk, sorted them both out and their ready to be welded, just waiting for a regulator adapter so i can gas the inside of the pipe whilst welding to weld both sides. Gonna crack on during the week Ben so if you have any issues on time etc, etc drop us a PM or tx.

Ahhhh, just what i needed :D, splitter for the Argon to be purged into the pipework.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u230/sxistevo/DSC00512.jpg

This is the second one as thought i would start with the hardest first. All parts have been de-burr'd and de-tacked.

Another shot to highlight the smoothness of them after some grinding and fileing.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u230/sxistevo/DSC00514.jpg

Tacked it all back together with TIG (a tad neater that stick or MIG, ay ben, lol.) Dint take any picks of it been tacked as boring but, waahhhooo, the first weld :o

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u230/sxistevo/DSC00518.jpg

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u230/sxistevo/DSC00522.jpg

Although an absolute pig to position when trying to get a steady and comfortable welding stance, pretty happy with the results. Purgeing was a problem tho as couldn't make the pipe stay still :(.

Only laid down one full weld and decided to stop due to this;

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u230/sxistevo/DSC00519.jpg

Not sure how clear the pic is but there is a build up of 'slag' on the inner ??

Right Ben, with this been an important component i want and im sure you want this to be right. Would be better if i grinded the tacks off again and welded each piece individually as then i can get a drill attachment to grind the inner 'slag' (<< Engineer talk, lol) off. Was told purgeing would not cause this, so im in two mind what to do.

What do you sugest bud??

Carry on and you sort the inner bit's out or do what i said and do each peice individually ???

hes a good lad, i went to college with him and he ended up doing exactly what i wanted to do :rolleyes: we decided to weld them up in stages and grind the weld where its penetrated back so theres no interruption to air flow :)

itll be attached with silicone pipes ;)

weve got a chop saw thing with a giant thin grinder wheel in it :)
took my bottom end to the machinist today and also picked up my bell housing......

i wanted 159mm keeping from the bellhousing face.....theyve taken off 159mm from the bellhousing face and made the back bit all nice and pretty :wack::wack: a minor but very annoying niggle so getting new bellhousing and getting it cut right :)

There is such a difference, maybe not so much on the rachets and more everyday stuff but certainly on the more specialist tools. If your using them everyday for a living its worth paying for the quality.

Great project, respect for all the self-doing stuff :notworthy . What cage is that, self made?

fabricage :)

realised today how good my machinist is

gave them all my bottom end for balancing including the flywheel, clutch and bolts :) they rang me to say that the clutch mounting holes on the fly are threaded and hes read all the info supplkied with the bolts and theyre supposed to be used with the nuts ( a4 page of fine print info and he took the time to read it all :notworthy) and advised that the threads be drilled out as per the advisories :D

however there was some bad news also :( the crank i supplied was bent :( 3thou i think he said across the length, as such i had to buy some .25 oversize main bearings and theyre going to grind it all so its straight and then balance it all up so no vibrations :notworthy should get the bottom end back monday by which time ill have finished the head work and it can all be built :D

head work wise im half way through....knif edged the centre of the inlet tract and started removing some horrible cassting marks, just got to remove the rest of the casting marks and then put the finish on the surfaces

havent touched the inlet as smaller will mean higher speeds and pressure which means less lag :) and the casting marks cant be felt through the carbon build up allready in the ports so i think itll be fine :)

the inlet however ive sharpened up the divide and removed all nasty casting marks (there were a lot) and also smoothed in the valve seats properly :)

here ive sharpened the divide and opened up the groove for the injector a little due to hooge injectors planned

well we finally got the spiral locks in place (two per side of the gudgeon pin) but one was bent after installation so it came out and the only spare went in :)

we then set about gapping all the rings and then fitting them to the pistons and then fitting the piston/rod assembly to the crank with the acl race series big end bearings....also used redline lube here to help with initial start up

everything went fine no real issues :D:D also got the oil pump fitted but had to call it a night there as im up at 5 for work in the morning:cry:

half way through our lass cooked me and james dinner :D but we also had col whod come round to watch and stef who was chief photographer and she let us all tribe into her house to eat and then leave again :notworthy

end of play and this is the state of the nation :) (edit: whoops its upside down... but you get the idea:p)

just been trying to get the front end back together and as with everything its a nightmare:(

the cusco top mounts are causing my ohlins struts to bottom out against the stut tower at the top  and im using the spacer under them.........

also it turns out my calipers are both passenger side:( so i need to get hold of the guy to get one replaced or swap the balance line and bleed nipples over and effectively run one upside down :wack:

also test fitted my 10j's on the front with a 255 and a 50mm spacer heres how they sit

Stick a block of wood or similar between the pistons of the wrong caliper and bleed it upside down before you bolt it on ;)

Lol, no shit matey, I was originally gonna write "aren't they gonna tramline like shit unless you got 12j on the rear"

But then I figured you ain't got 12j on the rear...

and it's a track car...

Thank fcuk for gravel traps :D

It will be, you're only doing it to bleed the air out of the system... once it's done and bolted on it wont make any difference. I think the wheel whore thing is going to compromise it as a track car but you already know I think that don't you :wack:

someone else suggested that......i didnt think it sounded too safe:confused:It was common practise when the mk2 golfs started eating rear calipers  Someone found matching calipers that had to be fitted upside down due to the handbrake mech but they were far cheaper than VW prices and bleeding them wasn't really a big issue
