View Full Version : s13 mega budget - revive a scrapper project...

Thought it was about time I put up a thread with my progress on my s13 project car. It was a scrapper when i got hold of it, had big problems with the engine and heaps of rust and bodywork to sort out.

The car has 150000 miles on the clock, but when i got it, it was totally standard and seemed to be quite well maintained., It has had one middle aged previous owner so i don't think it's had too hard a life before i got it.

First thing to do was remove the tow bar that was fitted... job done in 10 minutes.

I got this car deep in the winter so first job for me to do was takle the engine issues. Bottom end seemed fine, but it turns out all the inlet gaskets had blown big time, so once it warmed up it wouldnt run.

Thanks to Arrys enthusiastic persuasive ways i took the job on myself and got it done all under torch light in my underground car park... heres a few pics of the job I did.

the car when i got it...

http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f356/nitrodave/16.jpg

and thats as far as i am with it now.

Next job is to send it in to get new sills welded in (this week all being well) and the chassis rails done - thats all it needs for an MOT.

Once done i will put a top coat over the lot, maker it shiny, tax and insure it.

Plans are to lower it, fit a full exhasut (that i just won on ebay), steering wheel (that i just got on ebay), walbro fuel pump and up the boost ever so slightly with a bren device.

costs so far:

wheels - 80
s14a leather seats - 60
polished inlet plenum - 55
turbo back exhasut - 55 (ebay special 2nd hand 3" turbo back)
boost gauge and pod - 40
steering wheel - 50

more to follow shortly, hope you enjoyed the read!

Nice work Dave, you've got some hidden bodyworks skills it would seem. wish I could come close to that, I'm crap with filler and paint

Nice work mate, we should pay you to find our bargains cos that some good prices!

HAve you any tips for doing the boot? gonna try mine soon but never used filler before.

Hi Danny,

It's all your fault I'm even bothering with it - your enthusiasm for S13's got me interested!!! Now all i need is the motivation to do the crank oil seal... here's an offer Danny - I'll do your bodywork, if you do my crank oil seal :)

Also, your help with the plenum work was also much appreciated - and for the record I have bypassed that nasty hot start solenoid.

car was given to me by a local old boy who purchased a brand new 350z, he was going to take it to the scrap yard but i insisted on reviving it. Defiantely too good to scrap.

He owned it since new, kept it standard it's whole life (other than putting on a tow bar ??!!!) it has also NEVER been smoked in, even the original cigarette lighter is unused.

It was a state when i got it though, would start but after 2 minutes running it wouldnt run anymore - the gasket leaks were so bad once the mixture leaned out from a cold start it would just die. The seats were torn and covered in dog hairs and the rust around the car was immense. i think it was used as a dog kennel for a while.

Bodywork needed a lot of work, but got plenty done over the bank holiday. it's getting there and starting to look like a nice car now. I'm particularly chuffed with how the black roof looks - should be like that on all of them!!

I got the plenum from someone on here, so long ago i cant remember... it's a standard plenum just polished up real nice... still got the old one if anyone wants it to do the same. I wouldnt have fitted it if i wasn't taking the whole intake system off though.

As for the boot, the holes were pretty big once the rust was ground out. I used a wire mesh from behind, held in place with LOTS of fibreglass resin and matting then filled on top, it's pretty strong and looks smooth now. Took a fair bit of sanding, skimming, sanding, skimming...

Thanks for the comments guys... any recommendations appreciated also.

More pics will be up soon :)

which crank seal? front or rear? all I really need is the boot doing (i'll weld plates in) some flaky bits on the roof sorting out and catching a bit of rust on the arch/sill before it really rots. Sounds like we might be able to do a deal :)

rear crank seal, there is a drip of only when it's running - from between the block and gearbox... it's only my amateur diagnosis, but I'm guessing it's the crank seal. It only started after going for a rather spirited drive.

To do the rear crank seal does the gearbox need to come off? If so i might as well chuck a fresh clutch in there too!!

As for your bodywork... best thing to do is wait and see how mine comes out, if i'm totally happy then i'll do yours no probs. Have you still got the white s13?? I'm not too great with mettalic paints, but flat colours aren't too bad to work with.

We'll sort something out matey ;)

I read the title in completely the wrong way, by mega budget I thought you were doing some cheque book tuning :wack:

Looking good even considering the lack of finances invested :)

nitrodave
17-04-2007, 11:13
finances are tight at the minute, got 3 cars, an expensive flat to run and a holiday to pay for and my job simply doesnt pay quite enough to make this a full on, no expense spared project. with that, i do like a bargain and it makes it particularly satisfying knowing it hasnt cost a lot.

I've set £500 aside for mods and have spent a bit extra on fillers, sand paper.. paints etc... oh yeah and a full on service when i first got it.

as for the clutch, it still feels ok, but if i'm upping the power it could be worth it.

just wish i could weld - if i could i'd attempt the siulls and chassis rails myself.

Looks good so far :) I think I need to redo my boot once I have the spare cash it has been despoilered.. sort of the holes which were filled have all but one fallen out  and the finish is bumpy anyway.

Would like to see a better pic of the spoiler too (ie taken from further back) it looks liek you made it fit quite well :)

Shiny plenum is a good idea.. might be able to get hold of some equipment at work to do it... hmmm...

heya mel,

my problem is the car has no MOT and i can't tax it at the moment either - not until the sills and chassis rails are welded up... it's a bit too risky to try drive the car all the way to your place... thanks for the offer though mate, unless you know of anyone who can transport my car on a low loader from north london to southend.

anyone know any good mobile welders?? :)

just purchased this on ebay... £30 + £20 delivery, from the states mind... seller must be chuffed with the exchange rate.

seller assured me it was a turbo back, decat, 3.5" exhaust that he bought from Apex a year ago. Should clean up ok, if not - sod it, for £55 I'm not complaining if it's a bit grubby

i know its not an apexi or K&N... but i've never had a bad experience with cheap induction kits and for this budget project it'll do.

not too shabby for £20

Argus (said like leywelin-bowen) eh? Buget eh? I'd advise you to check the title again sunny :wack:

Cant tell from the photos, but does that filter have a coating of filter oil on it or not? If not then I believe you can get the K&N kit from halfords with the oil......on the downside, it will also bring the price spent on that filter upto K&N money :indiff:

.................................................. ..
So the car is welded and it has an MOT!! well chuffed, they spent 15 hours welding up chassis legs, sills, inside the arches, turrets... loads... did a good job, i'll get pictures up when i can.

here's a coulple for now
http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f356/nitrodave/DSCF0698.jpg
http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f356/nitrodave/DSCF0694.jpg

also got the steering wheel on, feels really sharp now, like a go kart!!

http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f356/nitrodave/Photo-0085.jpg

and i couldn't resist it but i got some lowering springs and fitted them on the rainy bank holiday monday. was quite easy when you got the tools and garage space...

here's before

i also trial fitted the spoiler, i think it looks great!!

it's a bit bouncy now, but handles well, not sure how long these shocks will last, they've covered 150000miles already!!

next on the list is fix the lights!!!! air filter - feels a bit restrictive, spray it all up nice, maybe fit some s14a skirts (after reading a thread recently), get a walbro and that's about it.

oh yeah and fmic, ebc, coilovers... ;) all in good time

spezer - this was the thread that inspired me to do the skirts...

http://www.sxoc.co.uk/vbb/showthread.php?t=291659&highlight=s14+skirts+s13

cheap and cheerful like this project.

Used the car for two days now to commute into town to the office, it's half term so no sitting in grid lock rush hour through london. The car performed glitch free, but it uses a lot of fuel!!

My tuned s14a (about 290bhp) is MUCH more fuel efficient. I got about 70 miles to £20 fuel - 16mpg is awful!! i can get almost twice that in the s14a.

The s13 isn't very grunty either, my s14a is brutal when the turbo kicks in, but on the s13 it boosts to about 12-13psi (standard car other than turbo back system). It just lacks the grunt my s14a has. I know it has a smaller turbo. Would an induction kit make that much difference? It does feel a bit strangled after 5000rpm.

I'm suspecting a duff lambda, how can i check if it's ok?

I'm also suspecting the shocks aren't going to last long now it's lowered and the clutch has a high biting point so i'm suspecting it will start slipping soon :(

Still, it's great fun to drive, definately has more character than the s14a, just lacks the power i'm used to.

nitrodave
07-10-2007, 21:59
time i updated this as i've taken a few recent pics...

fueling has got better over time, done a few thousand miles in it now and it runs great. hit 150000 miles this week

it's so much fun i havent touched the s14 in ages!! look at the state of it!!

http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f356/nitrodave/DSCF1026.jpg

final plans include front mount intercooler, walbro, t28 turbo and a remap. it runs relly well now so i'm leaving it for the moment. I'm off to york raceway next week and will be representing the jap rwd turbos in the Practical Performance Car magazine £999 challenge.

08-10-2007, 12:22
Yes it will work but it'll probably be way off of what it should be unless the mods are similar on the 2 cars but then you've got 2 different engines which would make it a nightmare. TBH the second solenoid and wiring will probably cost the same as a full new unit off the likes of Nengun.

The exhaust is one of ours, the 3.5" reference relates to the tailpipe diameter, not the diameter of the main tubing. Mongoose dont do the twin design anymore, only single round or oval exit.

Interesting project :) Why didnt you paint the boot lid?

The exhaust is one of ours, the 3.5" reference relates to the tailpipe diameter, not the diameter of the main tubing. Mongoose dont do the twin design anymore, only single round or oval exit.

Interesting project :) Why didnt you paint the boot lid?

3.75" tailpipes and 2.75" bore stright from the turbo. I love the sound it makes, on the motorway you dont get the cabin drone and on the run down whilst in gear it burbles and sputters. Has a real nice race car sound to it.

As for the bootlid, i did paint it! I'll get some better pics, pretty chuffed with how it came out.

before the spoiler was fitted, still not a great pic i know, but it shows it's all the same colour now. I left the dink in the off side rear wing by the boot... it's my 'fashion' dent ;)

Also, silkoflex is the nuts at bonding spoilers on, got it from a marine shop, super sticky icky marine adhesive. Couldnt recommend it more highly

Car's looking really good Dave - i reckon you could sell that for £2k if you wanted to (I'm sure you don't), but just shows how your hard work has paid off

ROFL....

Now that is funny!!
Shame water ingress has made it split though  using mdf as a spacer wasn't my best idea :annoyed: Thought the paint would have sealed it better

forgot to add, i got a quick shift and subframe collars that gave it a tighter new feel.

Like the s14 spoiler on the xantia too pdh!! I originally wanted a xantia spoiler for the s13.

One quick question if anyone can help... I have a greddy profec b spec2 on the s14... if i get another boost valve and loom can i swap the controller between cars and keep the same settings?

Isn't it the XM thats the simular one though? Xantia ones are very rare, only done it as i had an old s14 spoiler lying round!

you reckon? all my mates take the mikky becasue i drive a 'rust bucket', but it's been more relaible, quicker and LOADS more fun to drive than all their new£10 - £20k cars. They're just jealous :)

mdf coated in fibre glass matting and resin would work:thumbs: probably less work too!

and yeah, i think it was an xm spoiler, was a while ago.
