We've had a little progress on the Driftworks S15 in the workshop at Garage D, so I thought it was about time I let you guys know our plans for our S15.

Basically since October last year, things were set in motion to get a 600bhp 3 litre 2JZ GTE engine into the car. Things have dragged a little due to various complications, and it's now a race against time to get this thing on track for the first round of the EDC season on april 7th.

Anyway, pictures say much more about the scale of the job we have ahead of us:

Excuse the filthy engine and gearbox, it's there for the mockup. once everything fabricated, it's coming out for a little work :)

The engine mounts wern't with the engine, and would have been around 14 inches off fitting to the S15 crossmember, so the guys had a little play with some of the equipment they have on hand.

http://www.driftworks.com/images/S15build/EngineMount.jpg

Everything is still supported by jacks and frame work, but the final measurements have been taken, and only a little work remains to get this little lot mounted correctly.

http://www.driftworks.com/images/S15build/EnginePlacement2.jpg

http://www.driftworks.com/images/S15build/EnginePlacement3.jpg

I'm having a little play with where the turbo is going to sit. If we've got to make a manifold from scratch we're looking at doing something a little interesting. The main focus being clearing the exhaust into the other side of the engine bay so it doesn't have to dodge the steering rack and more importantly my fat feet.

http://www.driftworks.com/images/S15build/TurboMockup.jpg

We got a crappy old seat in there to take measurements of how the framework around the gearbox will effect my driving position. Long and short of it is that it won't at all. The only sacrafice we have to make is the clutch rest, which is'nt to much of a problem in a car that it's quite unlikely I'll commute in :p

sorry ot sound stupid, but is that the final position of the full engine?

it looks sat way back towards the bulkhead, is this to get the weight distribution 50:50 or is ther another reason(s)

good work though

If you going for weight distribution why dont you move the driving position back as well? A lot of the rally and touring cars have the seat about 2 foot farther back than normal and they tend the leave th engine where it is normally :wack:

19-02-2007, 12:38
I'd agree that moving the driving position back would help with the weight distribution, but most importantly you won't have to mess with the exhaust manifold quite so much, and the ergonomics will be better as you can have the seat in the same position relative to the gear stick as standard and use a custom pedal box and bigger offset wheel if needed:cool:

Looks like a great project, and it'll be good to see things as the build progresses

I always thought that was for side protection - if you are sitting in between the B pillars you are likely to be a lot safer in side impact. If it was just weight, then surely they would move the engine back too

Probably bit of both.

They did move then engine back in the that Volvo 850 estate that used to be in BTCC (remember that?) and the driver was pretty much on the back seats. With all the that car had an almost 50 / 50 balance which for front wheel drive car is fairly amazing!

joney
21-02-2007, 14:01
often the reason they wont move the engine is that the regs specify that the engine remains in the standard location, as it's a costly modifaction to make. The supertouring BTCC cars had the engine right up under the dash; basically anything from the huge budget DTM/Supertourer era that you can replicate is going to help performance a fair bit.... ECU controlled movable ballast anyone??! :D

mini update!.. Not as much done as we'd hoped, but there were 'minor' issues with the pipe benders being used for the cage (snapped a dye )

I'm still kidding myself that this will be done for round 1 by the way.

Finally our inlet manifold arrived, and after we wacked the engine back in to test fit it, we found that as we suspected, it causes a small issue with the new tubbed arches.. The manifold is being chopped ever so slightly, and another small scallop will be taken out of the arch.

Phil.. I forgot to pm you over on DW... I saw that you were looking into ideas of graphic designs/colour schemes for the S15... It may sound stupid but if you or one of the other lads has a Xbox360 then grab yourself a copy of Inport Tuner Challenge. It has a S15 model on it and you can create custom artwork, paint, vynal/stickers/logos and designs that will overlay onto the car... ;) There are also loads of kits too so you can get one that "Almost" matches the one that you are using and get a good idea of how its going to look... Its a bit hard to get used to at first but once done you can create almost anything...

Right, work has now started again :smokin:. I spent all day, and most of the night at Garage D. We got alot of the smaller fiddly jobs done, that will be 10 times as difficult once the cage is in there, and whilst shielding my eyes from weld burn :wack: I started cutting, drilling, and bracketing the fibreglass doors, then I did some serious adjusting to get the Vertex Ridge bodykit to fit over the beefy rear arches we'd built to protect the arch in the event of tyre delamination. I mocked up the rest of the kit, and although, yeah I admit at the moment, it just looks like an S15 shell with a Vertex Ridge kit, it has bumped up my drive to make sure this get's sorted now in as short a time as possible. We are really so close to getting the cage in it now. I'll be back down there either tonight or tomorrow morning, and by then Julian should have the Bpillar and Apillar bent up, and ready for all the various crossbraces, and doorbars etc..

I can see the light!!!!!!! :wack:

I can't remember the tubing specs, I'll check with Julian tomorrow. I know it's the good stuff, and I also know that the bends arn't so much to do with the material, and more to do with the uber expensive pipebender he's just invested in. It's the same one they use in American Chopper I think.

Little Knocks are awesome!!.. I went down there this morning to find the car already zinc primered :notworthy

http://www.driftworks.com/images/S15build/ZincPrimer.jpg

So while the guys were prepping some of the body panels, I went at the shell with seam sealer. Basically just doing the back section of the car to try and stop some of the tyre smoke from infiltrating the cabin, and sealing the rear firewall brackets..

http://www.driftworks.com/images/S15build/SeamSealer.jpg

While we waited for that to dry a little, the rest of the shell was prepped for paint, and a small hole was cut in the roof for a sunroof :D

http://www.driftworks.com/images/S15build/RoofScoop.jpg

Then the doors and bumpers were painted

http://www.driftworks.com/images/S15build/FirstPaint.jpg

http://www.driftworks.com/images/S15build/Paintedbumpers.jpg

So the shell was pushed into the booth

http://www.driftworks.com/images/S15build/PaintBooth.jpg

and the first coat was started

http://www.driftworks.com/images/S15build/FirstPaintCar.jpg

And then after an hour and a half or extremely challenging painting we have one painted shell :notworthy

http://www.driftworks.com/images/S15build/RearQuarterPainted.jpg

http://www.driftworks.com/images/S15build/FrontPainted.jpg

That's just the first part of the paintjob, but really not bad going considering work started yesterday. Many thanks to Tom, Chris, Richard and Stuart :notworthy

Very nice work, wish my S15 looked anywhere remotely close to that. I am currently rebuilding my S14 crash with an RB26DETT lump. The engine is gonna be fully built but for now I am going to using stock S15 ballbearing turbos. Should be fun, the hard part is that I am doing an S15 conversion on it, meaning the regular S15 front but also I got an S15 rear panel so I decided to try an S15 rear conversion on it. Has anyone ventured into this option and if so what was needed? I tihnk it would be more a fabricating thing. Anyway, will create another post for the rest, excellent work there fellas.

Been a while since I made an update here. The S15 did a trip to Europe to a static show, and then back to Garage D to wait for the time to do the complicated manifold. Well it's back at the DW workshop now, so I've put insane hours into trying to make it more of a car, and less of a pretty rolling shell :D

Okay updates:

Now using a GT4088r 1.06 :D

We've had a minor hiccup with the wastegate position interfering with the alternator, so rather than mess up all Julians lovely work on the twin scroll manifold, I've moved the alternator to the other side of the engine.

I've re-engineered the gear linkage and maded a new gear lever to give it that little bit more of a push forward as driving position is extremely important to me. The gear lever is now 32cm's from where it would have been with the engine and gearbox being pushed so far back into the car..
What an absolute ball ache of a job! I'm pretty chuffed with the result though

The engine is coming together nicely, and CrazyAnt just bought a tig welder, so we'll have some more of the custom work done in a more timely manor from this point on hopefully.
Today we spent half the day listing everything we need to complete the fuel system. Damn this is going to be expensive  :wack:.
Tomorrow we'll be going through the massive amount of other custom hoses, connections, bolts and fixings hopefully, so if I need to I can work over Christmas to get more done..

We've just got ramps, so watch this space for some hasty crafting action :D

Sorry the pictures arn't that great, my camera's decided to act up.

By 7:30 today (Christmas Eve) We had made enough progress to deserve some pics. Then of course the camera battery ran out :wack:. Here's what I got before it did.

Fuel system: I'd say we're 80% complete on this. God knows how many hours have gone into it so far, but the hard works done I think. Hopefully I don't have to spend any more on fuel parts. I could have bought a nice RX7 with what it's cost me :wack:

After a quick visit to the metal supermarket, I made a bracket to carry the lift pump on the fuel tank supports I'd made previously. Here it is mounted with the matching aeromotive 10 micron filter, and the -8 lines made up.

http://media.driftworks.com/S15/Fuel1.jpg

The rear firewall is now pretty much complete thanks to some hard work by James, Ant and myself. We're quite pleased with it. All it needs is a new pot of fireproof seam sealer, but it doesn't have any gap bigger than 1mm which is quite a feat if you've ever seen the shape of an S15 boot. Next sesh it'll have the rear firewall bulkhead fittings for the -10 feed and -8 return fitted.

http://media.driftworks.com/S15/Fuel2.jpg

Needs a polish ;), and that gap was corrected after the photo ;).
http://media.driftworks.com/S15/Fuel4.jpg

The rear fuel install is almost there too. I've even made a massive swirl pot. I just don't trust my ally TIG skills enough to not ruin it, so I've got a mobile welder we've used before coming to drop a bag of skill on it, as well as a whole pile of other ally bit's I've fabricated, but not had the courage to weld :D

Aeromotive UberMegaPump and 100micron filter. Lot's more braided hosing to come :)
http://media.driftworks.com/S15/Fuel3.jpg

Then we get to the front, and this is where the camera died. It's a shame as this pic makes it look a bit of a spagheti mess. I'm actually pretty proud of myself, as I've never done an Aeromotive fitting before.

What you can see is a -10 bulkhead fitting, into a Yblock adapter. I wanted -10 in, and 2 -8 out, unfortunately they didn't have that on the shelf, and they didn't have a -10 in 2x -10 out that I could use reducers on, so I had to source a -10 plug tap from Glasgow, and drill it out.
All went reasonably well, and I even managed to drill and tap the mounting holes to bolt through from the wheelarch to keep it looking cleaner in the engine bay.
Anyway, the Y block goes to to -8 lines, one to the front of the rail and one to the back. then I drill and tapped the rail to accept an M14 to -8 male to male, that goes to the new Turbosmart -8 to -8 Fuel Pressure reg, and back to the -8 bulkhead fitting for the return.

Believe it or not, what you see there is pretty much every hose for the front section of the fuel system. It's just not attached to the fuel rail in the picture. The ally pot is the new powersteering pot.

little trick that i found with polishing ally, its obviously going to be a little pitted and scratched from all the cutting and welding, so get it sand blasted first to smooth the surface off, then when polishing it makes it much easier ive found.

that looks well neat welding there mate, especially on ally,

Okay, we're kind of getting somewhere... If I had to pick a percentage of completion, it'd be around 92%..

We've got so much done recently, but everything is in a constant state of flux, as parts are completed then removed to complete another part.. I've only just got a working camera today, so I quickly threw the Inlet side back together and took a few shots. The exhast manifold is away being jigged at Prodrive, so I couldn't build up that side for the photo's although it is pretty much complete as well..
Lot's more pictures to come later, but these will have to do for now

That is the boost control solonoid, every boost hose on the car is braided -3 aeroquip fittings. Reliability is something we're really striving for with this build.

So are you running braided lines all the way from the BMC to the calipers?

Sorry missed that one. Yep, and I defy anyone to notice any difference between high quality braid and copper/braid :)

Twin LineLocks for a bit of stunting :D. Or that's the theory anyway :wack:

Twin line locks eh? To the individual rears I take it.

Be interesting to see what you can do with those - won't the diff get a bit upset?

Looking nice bay the way. Not going to be much space left in the engine bay is there :)

could be wrong but i'm guessing he's hooked them up to the fronts

pretty much all russ swift does, jams the throttle open, puts on the front right break and the car just donuts around the stationary wheels while he climbs out and the crowd goes wild :)

like i said, could be wrong, sure Phil will correct me if I am

I've always though that there wouldn't be much difference between the two, but the common school of thought tends to be that you have to have solid lines everywhere apart from the wing-caliper section! Porgress isn't made until someone tries it though, so top work!

If the opportunity arises I'll certainly be having a nose around the engine bay to where the lines run! :)

The silicone hose shown here:

http://media.driftworks.com/S15/Hotside2.jpg

Doesn't look to be the high temp stuff, which has a kind of reddish/brown inside. Is it going to be up to the job?

it's on the air intake so won't see anything other than ambient air temperature

edit: unless you mean the one on the right ( the outlet ) normal silicone hose should be ok for that too

I know it should be ok, but if it were me, I'd put the high temp stuff on to be on the safe side :)

Some more pics.

The boot is almost there now. It just needs the filler neck sorting, the level sender wiring, the new looms tying back, and the fuel cell sealing to keep some smoke out..

http://media.driftworks.com/S15/Boot2.jpg

http://media.driftworks.com/S15/Boot3.jpg

I've finished Pclipping 99% of the hoses. It's a bit messy at the moment, but here's a couple of shots from underneath.

http://media.driftworks.com/S15/Underneath1.jpg

Loads of room around everything for track side mechanics.

Here's some of the tidy work going on in the back at the moment.

http://media.driftworks.com/S15/Battery1.jpg

That's the battery cut off.. A very cool bit of kit..
http://media.driftworks.com/S15/Battery2.jpg

And here's the mess that is the wiring.. It's an absolutely massive job, but James is well on top of it

Are the hoses under the car are to the oil cooler, what size are they and are you using anything to pump it that far?

Yeah they are oil cooler lines. They are -10 and there's currently nothing but the oil pump. I'll be keeping an eye on oil pressure, but due to the position of the engine, the lines are actually only a metre longer than your average oil cooler kit, and as most of the run is unkinked straitness, I'm planning on it not being an issue :)

15-02-2008, 11:52
Fww, a lot of dry sump cars run long lines to rear oil tanks and are fed from std pumps, tho you may need to keep an eye on the temps as you might not need a big cooler, trial and error for a wee bit, tho dry sumping may be your next step if there's a great pressure loss ( I don't think there will be, but going down a size might help?).

Btw, Can i get a shot Mister? ( only kidding!).

very very nice mate, increadably impressed,
what are the 3 gold things in the electrical circuit, are they resistors of some kind??

Jezz_S13
15-02-2008, 12:14
Check that your oil pressure take off is on the return side Phil, unlike the CA where it's before so you don't see the drop.

There's 6, so I'd guess they are injector dropping resistors.

Looking very nice Phill:nod:
Dont take this in the rong way, all the pipes and wires, why have you put them all over the place? rather than routing them together? Shortest distance 1st? Or just make it up as you go along?
Just interested, as it could look even tider than it does now that way.

Because it's the best place to put them.. Shortest safest routing for everything.. I don't like fuel and electricity next to each other.

Is Julian doing all this work? Looks great!!

No, Julian did the original chassis fabrication. Little Knocks did the paint, and the other 80% of the work we've done ourselves at Driftworks..
