Welcome to my project S13. Its been two years now since I got this car, a gold UK 1991 200SX on a H with what had been discribed as having a "head gasket" gone...lol, let the can of worms be opened!
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/car-1.jpg
Once back I set about the head doing the gasket with a nice expensive metal gasket only to fire it up blip the throttle and get the big end banging harder than a pornstar! This was the start of a slippery slope that is my s13. Oh well I thought, I've started now so I may as well finish, so off to the local Nissan dealers for some big ends. I did them with the engine in situ, just jacking it up off its mounts. Had a few problems getting No.3 to sit correctly but thought I had it sorted :wack:, bolted it all back together and fired it up......no knocks! Blip throttle.......no knocks, woo hoo So I had my 200 on the road. I went for my maiden drive. Gently I drove round not giving it much stick keeping under 3.5k and the gentle loads but slowly a noise began to rear its head....knock, knock, knock, who's there? Its the big ends again rearing there ugly curved heads! Ended up getting towed back with a total of only 30miles covered:cry:

And that has been the the total mileage I have covered in the car to date the engine was pulled out and I began a strip down.

While the engine was out my car was left sitting outside my house for a bit.
One morning I came outside to find half a brick embedded in my windscreen:rant: . Who have I upset this time I thought and at the same time thinking it cant get much worse than this. I really thought I had upset someone but after watching the watchdog program and seeing my then neighbour on it for running away with £3.3 million of other people's money they invested with him and him driving a silver sports car (gold can look silver at night) I see what has happened. Message for the Person who threw the brick: How dumb have you gotta be to mix up an silver audi titty with a gold 200, the badges on the front usually help.

I had my bottom end rebuilt:

The Block's spec is as follows:

Honed bores
Weisco Pistons
Pauter Con Rods
New Nissan Oil pump
New Nissan Crank (Treated after balancing)
Fully Lightened and Balanced Bottom End

Pablo13

The Head has done only 30 miles since it came back from getting skimmed so I just cleaned the face.

Good work fella

quite like the gold cam covers  not so shore on the blue gearbox :wack:

good spec for the block  have you put a metal head gasket in this time?

Pablo13
08-09-2006, 16:08
Yeah there is a greddy MHG in there. :) Was gonna go for another box colour, but blue is what I had there. I know what you mean, not 100% keen on it myself but its better than it looked before, and most of it is tucked out of sight when its in!

Pablo13
09-09-2006, 16:33
On friday I got the engine wired in and fired up. Unfortunately the ebay FPR does leak from the fuel rail so I will have to make a gasket up or see if I can just get the adaptor from the driftworks shop. Unlike the one I got the dw one has the tube that slips up the rail with the rubber seal. Mine has none of that. Next on the list is to get it M.O.T.-able which will include a new screen and I can feel some welding coming!!

Pablo13
11-09-2006, 18:10
Well its a mixture of emotions today. Got it all back together and managed to drive out of the workshop, which was nice . I then started checking over the body. There is alot of welding to be done for an mot :(. I need both sills doing and a patch on the passenger floor and on the passenger chassis rail. Not what I was expecting! Fair enough the last time I gave the underside a good once over was two years ago, but when I tapped it was solid, todays tapping resulted in a large pile of rust on the floor! I also took my spoiler off today to examine the rust and its pretty rough have a look and give me your opinions wether to fix or bin it.....
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/removedspoiler-1.jpg
Apologies for pic, dropped my phone in fibreglass filler :wack:

Them dam front arms! I tried to take off the oldies and the front bolt dont budge
it has rusted itself to the metal sheath in the bush. When I tried to turn it the
bush just ripped . I will attack it with an angle grinder tomorrow cos ive tried
everything else!! Talking of grinding I decided to take one to the bootlid and get
that done lookin OK ish.

I run out of filler! still a bit more to do. I stuck a coat of primer on it to see how much more is needed there are two main areas to do.
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/primedtail.jpg
The photo hides alot, its far far from perfect, but when a FRP boot is in the pipeline it will do for a while. gotta add more filler yet though!

Pablo13
19-09-2006, 19:51
Just a quick update . Got myself a nice black roof . This has confirmed my choice for the bootlid to go black too. Also fixed a split pipe I had from the turbo oil return pipe, it was leaving an annoying drip on the floor .
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/blackroof.jpg
That was all I could do tonight....got roped into doing my girls brakes on her E30

IIvIIitch
19-09-2006, 21:48
did you weld the boot lid or is that just filler and wire mesh?

Pablo13
27-09-2006, 17:17
Nah its all filler, mesh and two plates of metal at the top what I put in place with.....wait for it.....filler:)

Pablo13
02-10-2006, 18:52
Its update time:thumbs: but first I have to post this speed cam outside my
work, does exactly what it says on the tin!!
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/speedcamfunnyexactlywhatitsaysonthe.jpg

I grinded my arms off today. Well, only one needed grinding the other came
off easy......
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/grind.jpg
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/grind1.jpg
Yes I am the numpty with the grinder:wave:

Lined up the new rods so they are same length as oldies till I get the
geometry done
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/oldnnew.jpg
And presto! On
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/newarm1.jpg
Thats about it for now, few bits and bobs then its off to weld. Judging by
my previous welding attempts:wack: I think im gonna get someone else to do it, so If anyone can recommend a good/cheap welder in the east london essex area let me know!

Pablo13
14-10-2006, 10:59
Hey peeps! Just picked my car up today from the welders. 7 miles now covered on the new engine run in, so far so good:)
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/7milesback.jpg
I still need more work (and paint!) on that bootlid. I never had any pictures of the rusty sills cos I was too ashamed of them:no: but here is the finished articles:
Right
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/rightsill.jpg

Upside down left
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/leftsill.jpg
I can assure you they look ten times better than the black patchwork that used to be there:nod: Also done was a patch on the chassis rail and a spot on the passenger floor. Gonna Go give it a hover out cos its covered in dog hair on the inside fit a few more bits and clean it up.....more pics later today:D

15-10-2006, 14:36
Been Fiddling. I attempted to fit and ebay front strut but whilst fitting it I realised just how crap it is. It fouls the brake reservior and doesnt actually look like It will keep it stiff anyway so its going back where it belongs........on ebay.
I also fitted my leather nismo knob to replace the one I tore earlier on and got
my head unit in
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/nismoknob.jpg

17-10-2006, 17:57
Just a quickie. Got an mot for it today as this will be my daily driver for now as well as the occasional event thrown in for good measure :).
an on her first official day back on the road I come home to find another load of DW goodies just arrived
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/dwbits.jpg
Thats a nismo gearbox mount to go with the engine ones I have but not fitted yet, some oil for my gearbox, solid steering bush, magnetic sump plug, and option vol 20 dvd which im gonna watch tonight. on the downside I seem to have a bit of oil smoke on the over rev which would lead me to believe the turbo is shagged, hmm, better get saving!

This was purchased from ebay
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/tubular.jpg
Yes its an xs power job. I know it will crack:nod: , which is why I have decided to buy another and when it does crack swap and weld, swap and weld, and so on. Cheaper option than going for the more expensive ones I have seen (dependent on the number of time it cracks i suppose:wack: ). Turbo has been built and should be here on monday so next week I can crack on and fit it:thumbs:

The XS manifolds do crack but are alot better if you support them by welding a bracket to the manifold pipe and bolting it too the head, then support the manifold where it joins the downpipe by welding a bracket there and bolting it too the gearbox. Did that to mine and it never cracked for atleast 6000 miles when i sold the car

Well I cracked on and got on with the turbo fitting today. All went quite smoothly and I had the turbo off ok.

And from then on it all started to go downhill
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/Bittoosmall.jpg
That aint gonna fit!

I went to fit the xs manifold and it looked as though it it wouldnt fit with the abs on even though this is a mk2. I may well be able to fit if i removed the abs to get it in then refit it. but then I came up with an idea of removing the studs to slot it in and then refit the studs once the mani was in place. So I cracked on and started to remove the studs......and ended up snapping a stud:annoyed: Its been left there and hopefully a stud extractor should be in my possesion tomorrow:)

Been so busy and all my workmates cars have been braking meaning ive had no time to work on mine:( . Finally could get on and do a bit this evening:
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/studout.jpg
Bitch stud out!:D I got on with it and removed the abs to test fitted the manifold, abs looks like it will go back on after. http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/testfit.jpg
I managed to bolt up the turbo to it eventually and its more or less on, with about 6 of the nuts holding it on there now. Got kicked out at 6 by the security guards wanting an early night:mad: The turbo just fits on there, the stud that holds the metal cover on the engine mount just touches the turbo inlet compressor housing.

Cut the pipes back got the rad in, leaving the cowling off for now, see how hot she gets (was just under half before) Tubby elbow is on and I changed my offside rear caliper over as it was seized. Need to get some more 75mm silicone connector pipes, downpipe on, air box back in, relocate battery to boot and I still aint fixed that stud. pissed me off so much last time :annoyed: ive just been doin other bits and keeping my distance from it.

27-11-2006, 19:57
Well Ive finally got the exhaust manifold on now all nuts are tight and im happy (4th time off and on:smash: . looking good mate, with regards to getting the downpipe modified i shouldnt think youd have any problems, the hardest bit will be cutting the flange off. i think it will be stainless but unsure of the grade, but either way it 'can' be mig welded but go for tig, gives a much better weld  any engineering place should be able to have a go at it for you for not too much money.

Pablo13
27-11-2006, 20:47

Nice and easy to bleed. Handy when no c**t wants to help and you got a compressor to hand. Still waiting on those hose connectors on ebay......come on! hurry up! Do they not realise I need them asap!

i woudnt worry about heat soak with a cone filter mate, it effects NA cars more but with a tubo car the inlet temps are being heated up by the turbo anyway and its the IC's job to cool them down, if your that worried just fit a heatshield round a cone filter or get one of those sealed jobbies (bmc) and route the cold air feed down where the WMIC was,

Got me a battery wire from ebay:) . It was removed from a E34 BMW 5 series that has the battery under the rear seat.
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/wirebatt.jpg
Very chunky, dunno what guage exactly but its thicker than 4 guage and can flow 300amps. Also comes with this handy connector:

Which as luck would have it pops straight on:thumbs: :

Looking at the height of the battery a rear strut brace could even be used as the clamp!!:wack: I will knock something up though. There are a few things im not 100% happy with in the engine bay (airbox being one) and will come back to them at some point, but it needs to be back OTR soon and Im aiming for next week sometime:whip: :smash:

Infact its the second time back and it still dont fit:annoyed: :annoyed: . I think something got lost in translation, the bloke I deal with was out and there was some eastern european bloke there I told him it needed moving 8cm in one direction but when I get it back and offered it up he'd only moved it 8mm:mad: So that has to go back again! Apart from that just waiting on a braided water return pipe to turn up off apex and it should move:)

Thanks ikram and turbo for the support:thumbs:

After much communication with apex I have been told that there is no braided turbo return waterline for the CA18DET:eek: , which is a bit of a problem as the original solid metal one no longer lined up thanks to the new manifold putting the tubby in a slightly different position. Many times I tried to fit it but could only get one side's bolt in, and then the other wouldnt line up propperly to catch the thread:mad: Much head scratching ensued until I decided to make my own flexi pipe out of the original
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/waterreturn.jpg
Take one normal pipe and chop up into three sections
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/waterreturncut.jpg
Chuck the middle section away and replace with a length of rubber hose and jubilee clips on each end. I also put a larger hose over the top to protect from melting itself on the tubby.
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/waterreturnmod.jpg
And just like that it popped straight on;)
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/waterreturnon.jpg
Plenty of length so its not near the tubby to get burnt. rubber hose should be fine as its part of the water system and only has to hold the same pressure as all the other hoses in the system.
On the exhaust front its not looking like its going to get done this side of the new year, and as Im breaking up on thursday the oldie will have to go back on if I wanna get it back before crimbo:annoyed: . I have also made a base up for the battery box in the boot and should get that finished tommorrow with a touch of luck:sxoc:

I tried to fit the standard exhaust back on but it dont fit with the new mani, it fouls the gearbox:( Never got to finish the battery box and now she is all locked up @work over the christmas and the new year so she wont be back and I cant really do much at home. The Q45 maf went on ebay and I managed to get this Z32 one for less than what I sold the Q45 one for:D Also in there is an AEM UEGO wideband sensor, which should help me from blowing my engine up whilst on the way to gettin it mapped by Jez:Plug: I havent seen this wideband a on sxoc yet and have no reports of how good it is so will have to suck it n see:rolleyes: Comes with the Bosch LSU4.2 sensor so it cant be too bad and I got it for a good price. Thought I'd treat myself to a (probabbly fake ebay jobbie) Nismo oil cap to tart up the engine bay a bit. Spoke to the welders and they only came back to work this Monday so Im still waiting patiently:annoyed:

Looking like a good project mate, i've just done the walbro and those pipes were nightmare! so i feel for you

You can get the braided water lines from hose solutions on ebay. I havent tried any myself but they seem to be reasonably priced.

How much did they charge you to modify the downpipe? I got quoted £130 to do that!

Just done the same caliper change on mine, got the 300zx rears too and it makes a big different to the S13 jobs!!

Yeah I see that on ebay just after I made my home brew version:indiff: If my one dont leak then Im in no rush to change it but may do when the occasion comes that there is nothing else important to buy.

Talking of the downpipe I got it back today (3rd time, and only tacked) and it fits:eek: , it cost me £30 so far, but I need a sensor adapter putting in it now so I guess £60 for the time they put in as the flange has been off and on 3 times now! Where did you get quoted £130?!!

Hello:wave: Long time no post!

Well I have got me downpipe back finally. After all the messing about they only charged me £50 in all, and I got the thread for the sensor put in to:) not the best fit but atleast its on now. Scuse pics, couldnt get flash on phone to work for some reason

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/exh.jpg
after some discussions with people I worked out that the reason it was smoking bad was overfuelling and not burning oil (phew) meaning I did not need to pull it apart again:thumbs:

So I put out a SOS on the SXOC for lend of a afm and drifting dal came though for me.....leading me to start this thank you thread and see the V8 S13 close up:cool:

As Thursday draws closer-going to see Jez for custom map. I was getting more and more worried it wouldnt make it as the bugger still wouldnt start, even with the new AFM  It turned out it was flooding, but no amount of fuel pump fuse pulling and spark plug cleaning would seem to cure it, so I rummaged my old spark plugs and found an old set off my wrx. Luck would have it the are the same size and being they come from a turbo jap car a similar heat range too. Whacked em in and she fired straight up:D I let her run for a bit and put in some antifreeze, then took her for a quick spin round the bock to check all is well. Lambda guage is all plumbed in but I havent cut another hole in my dash yet as im usure if Im keeping all my existing guages so its resting on the passenger seat:wack: with me keeping a close eye on it;) Strangely its reading 11.2 at idle. A new set of plugs have been ordered from apex:Plug: and all being well should be here tomorrow so I shall whack them straight in. Also today while I went round the block I noticed that when I dip the clutch the revs drop to 500 and i have to blip the throttle so keep it from stalling:rolleyes: . I quick search in S13 tech has revealed that the most likely culprit is the IAC valve so that will be off for a clean tomorrow.

Even my mut approved:D
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/plugdog.jpg

I drove home today very slowly and very fookin loudly as the old exhust back section would not mate up with the downpipe so its exiting at the downpipe at the mo:wack: I called up Hayward & Scott today who are custom zaust manufacturers and they can fit me in to make my final section for my side exit exhaust tomorrow:notworthy Also being incororated into that is one of these bad boys
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/ecvbox.jpg
Which should quieten down things a tad;) Been quoted £100ish for it which cant be bad:thumbs: So that means a slow drive to them tomorrow followed by another even longer slow drive to jez Thursday.

Stay Tuned!

No the slow driving is needed Ive been watching the AFR guage and it has been reading lean. So If I drove it normal I would get some serious engine meltdown:wack: As for me girlfriend im even giving her a lift back to work in a bit so she can drive my WRX for the first time back home. Also Managed to get another 100 miles under its belt before the trip to Horsham Develpments tomorrow......cant wait as I cant seem to go over 50mph without the afr reading lean:indiff: All in all, a good day has been had.

Yeah its not too bad. As I said the flap is half closed so it could be even quieter (or louder:wack: )if needed but how it was was fine, possibly a bit loud for some but its live-able for me. Still have to route the cable for full on the move adjustability:)

15-02-2007, 17:01
Few! What a day! after a careful slow drive to Horsham Developments the fun began. Me being a numpty forgot to take any photos while I was there:annoyed: I was all ready and had brought my Z32, 444s and even a spare ecu! After a little chat we decided to modify a stage 2 chip to work and keep the boost to 10psi for now until I have a boost controller fitted and got 1000+ miles out the way.
that also keeps the original injectors and AFM in place. Also Jez thought my 444cc injectors would not be enough for the setup so he bought them off me and has recomended I find some 555s for next time:thumbs: . Anyway, we cracked on and jez plugged his ecu into my car then into his laptop and we went for a drive up the road. All went well until the end when I blew a boost pipe off:eek: After a quick search we found the culprit to be a jubilee clip that wouldnt tighten up propperly so swaped that out and all was ok. My temp guage hasnt really been reading above the first mark for the past few days. The boot up the road highlighted a leak coming from around the termostat area which I thought was a pipe I tightened previously but there are so many pipes there its hard to tell exactly where its coming from. I plumped for the thermostat today (as it was one part I have never removed). When I removed it I found out that the thermostat in it does not have a jiggle/gangle pin in it so assumed its a pattern part and could be causing an air lock in the system. I re-fitted it to get me home and sealed it with some red nissan sump gasket sealer:wack: Its got me home and even went to just under half way on the motorway, but as soon as you slow down it goes back down again:confused: A original nissan thermostat has been ordered so we will see if it helps, but when I got home a popped the bonnet its was still leaking, so I guess a more indepth strip down of that area is required. Well at least I can drive it with out fear of blowing it up now and its got 500miles under its belt:thumbs:

Pablo13
24-02-2007, 15:02
I got myself a genuine thermostat and gasket from nissan, complete with jiggle pin :)
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/thermonew.jpg
Whipped the old crapper out which I belive has something to do with my wierd temp readings and compared it to the new one, quite different really
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/thermooldandnew.jpg
Bad pic but you can just make out the tiny but important pin on the side which is rather, er.... important it seems!
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/jiggle.jpg
Then I cleaned up the faces what where covered in a mix of nissan sump sealer and broken gasket :wack: as best I could with a scraper and finished it off with a bit of wet n dry on a block of wood
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/face2.jpg
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/face1.jpg
Now I had a feeling it wasnt the termostat itself that was causing the leak. I thought Id change it as it was causing the temprature fluctuation, and on the off chance it could well be the thermo cos it was leaking in that area and I hadnt been able to identify quite where else it was leaking as it has been dark when ive looked. So once the thermostat was back on I went round the water pipes in that area and checked all the clips for tightness. Gingerly I started to fill with back up with water. Two kettles in and I start to hear a drip on the floor. After a quick search in the daylight this time it looks like a pipe about the diameter of a 50p and no more than two inches long, directly to the left of the thermostat has a tear in it. Which I am happy about, now I know what the problem is, but not so happy that my local nissan is now closed and I cant fint any pipe to fit it:annoyed: I will whip it off later and hopefully find a substitute for it at work monday:thumbs:

Pablo13
26-02-2007, 22:07
Yesterday I managed to get the old pipe out which was quite a mission as you have to disconnect lots of electrical connections and a few pipes to actually get to it. The hose leaking was connected to the pipe to the left of the thermostat.
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/waterleak1.jpg
And the offending hose.
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/waterleaksplitpipe.jpg
Managed to find a bit of pipe laying about the same dia I cut to size and it all went back ok. I fired it up and filled up with water, after about the 3rd kettle I knew there was still another leak as it kept taking the water. It was getting dark again so I gave up until today. Got home from work and had a look in the rad, and it hadnt really gone down a great deal, so it was only loosing it under pressure when the engine is running. So I started it up again and repeated the water filling, had a quick look underneath and I could see a drip coming front the front of the engine right in the middle. I traced it back up and found it to be my 500mile old nissan metal impeller'ed water pump (and nissan gasket) leaking:eek: I was quite taken aback Its gone already all I can assume is the gasket hasnt seated propperly, so that will be coming back off for inspection probably and going back on with hermatide or similar to give it a good seal. Its only a drip at idle but as soon as you rev it I get a waterfall down the right side of my block:wack: Quite nice if you like that kinda thing....couple of bonsai trees in there and you'd have you own mini garden:D

If its light when I get back I will start the strip down tomorrow. Do need a good torch:)

Pablo13
01-03-2007, 18:07
Got myself a new torch:) Managed to get home while it was light today and cracked on and got the pump off. No problem with the bearing. Managed to do it with the timing belt still in place and the rad too:thumbs: .
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/waterpumpfar.jpg
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/waterpumpclose.jpg
After opening a thread in s13 tech about my pump I worked out that the old thermostat was overpressuring the pump due to not having a jiggle pin and caused the gasket to blow, hence the waterfall. On this next pic you can see the orange water stain on the gasket (to the right of photo) where its let go
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/waterpumpback.jpg

And boy.....Im glad I did. Im also glad I invested in a driftworks magnetic sump plug and a mag II oil filter, take a look:eek:
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/drainplug.jpg
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/drainplug1.jpg
You can also just about see the same metal filing in the filter centre
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/magoilfilter.jpg
Dunno how normal that amount of filings is for a engine running in, but there was a fair bit there, so lets hope all is ok. As it was up in the air Ive now ran the cable for the exhaust control valve and took some photos to show you how they routed my exhaust. Its not exactly minimum bends but it is straight through when needed and it pops out the side like I want, it even made it onto the 4 poster ramp with an inch to spare and that beats the size of any speed bump ive come accross:thumbs: Plus theres room for more lowering:D

I started by removing the hot start solenoid, as I will be needing the hole for the solenoid on the intake pipe as well as the actuator take off fitting. Did the FPR mod first, following Payworker guide in S13 FAQ
Then I ripped out all the hot start gubbins

Then came the boost pluming, mounted the boost solenoid, then had to mod my newly moded FPR take off for the fuel pressure sensor

I was gonna keep this a secret from you lot, but I think it best you all know the truth  . Everything was going well, took her out for a bit of a drive, had the boost setup to 0.8 bar originally, then when I had checked the
AFR was all good 0.9 then 1.0 bar. I know what your all thinking, but all went well and I arrived back home with no problems to report. Later that evening I went out to pop up the road, started her up drove up the road and knock knock knock  WTF I thought, maybe my sticky tappet has really gone bad I thought, being optimistic :wack: Deep down I knew it was the big ends so I turned it round and parked it up. Got a second opinion in the form of Paul_S13 which confirmed my worst fears :annoyed: :annoyed: Its the big ends :( and after 1500 f-ing miles:ghey: Now I now big uns are a bit of an issue on CA's from what I read on here, so this is where thinking ahead pays off:thumbs: I had my complete bottom end assembly balanced and put together by a well regarded engine builders ( I shall save them the blushes for now :wack: ) who have customers such as Bugatti, Aston Martin and Rolls Royce to name a few. I would'nt have expected this from a company with such a reputation so I decdided to pay them a visit. Gladly, once I had explained to them what had happened there exact words were:

Pablo13
30-03-2007, 17:32
"Yes we will take it back, as we would be as interested as you are to find out whats gone wrong"

Phew I thought, thank god for that! Unfourtunately their terms and conditons state that they must have it back how it left them, i.e: short block assy, meaning Ive got to take it back out again:annoyed: :annoyed: :annoyed:
Plus ad to this that Ive taken the piss at work which means I cant leave my car there for longer than 24hr at a time, makes it look like I am gonna have to do it outside my house, oldskool stylee  I am currently bidding on an engine crane on ebay :wack:, and it will also become available for hire too :Plug: As I know all you guys may also need it  Paul_S13 has kindly offered his services in the engine removal job, so I just need to get all these together with a bit of good weather and crack on :smash:
Right now though, I feel like crap, Im down on this car and could really, really do with your comments to pep me up a bit, starting to have thoughts if its all worth it or not?? What I do know is this could well be the CA's last or second from last chance to behave or its gonna get stripped of performance parts and sold and SR or RB will be sourced. Please do comment

Any news from the engine builders Pablo?

Twas yesterday I dropped it off. Seemed quite busy so I have no idea how long till they call. I did however notice he was being very careful with his words so I dunno what they may try and pull :indiff: . No questions were asked about my boost etc. I never supplied the old oil or anything like that. I did however drop the line about standard nissan bearings being not much cop, and that was one of the parts they sourced themselves :wack: Just praying they dont try and put it on me somehow, if they do I will be on here in a jiffy picking your brans for things to say :sxoc:

Pablo13
25-04-2007, 16:39
Finally got round to calling the builders today. They have stripped and inspected, and its currently in bits on there bench  They are still humming and ahh'ing as to how its been caused. What they think is the oil cooler (that bolts to the block) may have had bits inside it from the first meltdown, but cant quite see how I managed to get 1500 miles out of it before it went wrong as it usually goes within 300-500 miles. I said maybe it was the frequency of oil changes that may have extended it. I also stated that the cooler was originally supplied to them with the block so Id have expected them to clean it out, and im pretty sure I had a quick blowout with an air line before refitting. When I originally recieved the block from them all ancilaries (and I mean all) were removed and supplied to me in a plastic bag. I also asked after the crank and they said yes it has been marked :( but I have no idea how bad it is. They said they are waiting for the big bad boss to come back from being away before they can come to a conclusion on it so I should hear back from them on Friday or Saturday :indiff:

Paul_S13
25-04-2007, 16:42

Woo Hoo, We've turned a corner :)

Called today. They still cant put there finger on the exact cause but most likely foregin objects (namely metal fillings in oilways:wack: ) that caused it to go. Er, not exactly rocket science is it? Anyway the crank is having a regrind thanks to damage on number 3 (always seems to be 3??). As for the big ends, ACLs are going in. Unsure as to what ones exactly but I do recall black and copper being mentioned in the phone call so im off to ACL's website to see if I can fathom out what ones are going in this time. Long time no post! Some of may have seen these already on another thread, but I got myself some stop-gap rims. Aparently there called Onsuku super mesh off a Z32. 17"x8" 5x114.3 unsure of offset, £29.66, with tyres! Gotta love them ebay deals

There in need of a serious refurb as you will see, thinking of painting the centres black an repolising the rims. Yes the two on the left are shagged one has a huge dent in the rim and the other has a crack about 1.5 inches accross on the rim. Both were dropped off today in west london to be repaired, £20 for the dent and £60 for the crack.

Got the rubber off at work

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/rimfreshpaint.jpg
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/rimjustpainted.jpg
Thats with no laquer on the black paint. Ive only gone up to 320 grade wet n dry on the rim at this point. As these are 5 stud allys and I have 4, I had to get on with the conversion starting with the rears
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/hubs5to4.jpg
It was murder getting to this stage as the hubs had seized in the knuckles, I had aquired "two black mans pinches" by this point, one on each hand :wack: Also managed to get my adjustable arms on while I was at it.
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/hubinbitswithtoearm.jpg
I could then test fit the wheels (Laquered and polished by now) minus the disc as when it came to redrilling I found my extensive tool set only has drill bits to 10mm and not 13mm :(
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/testfit-1.jpg
Offset is a bit weak but I still have the disc to fit plus some DW adjustable (15-25mm) hubcentric spacers to go on.

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/itsbackagain.jpg
They could not give a 100% definitive answer as to why it happened but they put there money on the oil cooler thingy that bolts ontop of the oil filter, even though you can take it apart to clean it, you can never fully clean the inside of it and recomended I dont put that one back on.
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/enginekiller.jpg
I had a rumage at Dals earlier today (nice 1 Dal)and found myself a euro/jap spec plate with out the cooler attachment, and fitted it to the block (see pic) . The plan is to get a propper rad type cooler and omit the nissan one altogether. So Ive gotta start to rebuild her, but Ive already hit a snag. I could have sworn I had half a tube of that sump gasket sealant somewhere, but can I find it? You bet your ass I cant, turned half the house upside down looking for the stuff :wack:

No just the rear discs, lol. You cant use s14 discs as they dont use a drum type handbrake

Pablo13
06-08-2007, 16:37
Well the bottom end is as built up as its gonna be. Sump and and bits are all on and Ive connected up the water pipes for the missing cooler with another bit of dead s13 I rummaged from Dal's. Cant go too much further with it or I wont be able to carry it out to the car :wack:
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/oilpipe.jpg
Ive also touched up the engine bay ready to get the nismo front mounts on tomorrow and brought the head in so I can strip it and make sure theres no naughty bits of metal hiding in there and squeeze out the tappets and refil with fresh oil. Will also take the turbo oil pipe off and check that too.

Pablo13
07-08-2007, 10:55
Well the bloke who said he could fix my 2 dodgy rims actually couldnt. The crack wasnt a problem, but before he was going to weld them he needed to make sure they were true. And one of them wouldnt go, its ok if the rim itself is damaged but whats unfixable is if the centre of the wheel is twisted, and yes one of mine had a twisted centre :( The bloke had spent 6 hours already trying to straighten them but to no avail so I said he could have them for scrap for his troubles and wiped my hands of them. Now I dont mind the odd wheel look, but cant be having 17"s at the rear with spacers pushing them out to the arches and puny prefacelift rims on the front so I ordered a pair of rims off and they turned up today :D

Im sure you all know what they are as there bloody common as muck these days. The other particluars are et30, 9.5 wide, with a stretched 225. These will go on the back and I will move the old 17"s to the front until I can get a matching pair of 9.5" and then save the 17"s for ripping up at drift days and the like. I have however run out of dollar this month to buy some s14 front hubs, which is a bit of a bummer. At least the rims are here!

Well it moves as of tuesday! I had I few problems with camsafts, but shifty biscuits came through for me and sorted a cam out a very short notice, it even came gift wrapped :wack:
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/WraPPEDCAM.jpg
After that it fired up but was poping and banging out of the exhaust so a trip to Dals secured another AFM and all was well.
And proof that it moved (its at work)
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/SHADY13.jpg
Had a bit of a moment tuesday eve. The car made it all the way to work and back. I then went out about 5 mins after to move the car closer to my house and in 50 yards pissed about 3 litres of oil out the ebay sandwich plate
Which promtly got removed and now Im on the look out for a good'un as all I have for oil info now is a little red light :)

If I knew It would'nt be doing it! When I originally fitted it it was way too tight and pissed out straight away so I took it off and put it back on as tight as an oil filter and it got me to work and back before going again. Its some cheap ebay job for about £15. Its made of crappy alloy and the rubber seal dont look great either so you get what ye pays for me thinks, Im off to mocal!

Not much of an update im affraid. Managed to get the rear links on yesterday. I know its not to everyones tase, and some people dont like musical mods on here. I swapped out the awful nissan front speakers and got my pheonix gold components Ive had laying about for ages in. Took a photo of how it stands now

Desperatley in need of so 5 stud hubs for the front, hopefully should be sorted by this time next week. I also ordered myself an arch roller from nengun and Im going to learn how to do it on her first :wack:

After reading about a possible contributary cause of BE failure on CA's: oil not draining fast enough back to sump. I decided to take action. There was a few possible remidies such as drilling out the back of the head to fit two more drain pipes to the sump and enlarging the original holes, I opted for the easy option. Fitting twin catch tanks! Heres what a managed to knock up with what was to hand (lucozade and ant killer bottles :D )
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/Bay0907.jpg
Need to get a few lengths of hose and tidy it up a bit, but it should work for now

Ive left the breather hose connected to the intake hose that goes to turbo mainly cos I ran out of pipe the right dia. Unsure if I Should also feed this into a catch tank?

You may also notice from that photo I also managed to fit an engine damper Ive had laying around for ages.

japdrifter
24-09-2007, 17:52
ive never seen an engine damper...wat do they do?
i suppose its something along the lines of cutting down the amount of vibration betwwen engine and mounts or something like that?

Pablo13
24-09-2007, 18:30
Lol, if anything it would increase vibes. It just slows down any violent movement of the engine and probably allows a bit more transfer of power to the wheels rather than being used to rock the engine about

I spent most of Saturday down at Dals workshop fiddling with my car. Massive thanks to dal for staying late with me again :notworthy. The tappets were still making a noise after taking them all out and sticking them in a vice then leaving them to soak in oil, so I ended up replacing all of them with a head Dal had laying around. Now shes silky smooth :D I also managed to stop the oil leak I had.
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/OILLEAK.jpg
It was a combo of the front crank seal and where the oil cooler bolts to the block. there was a little knick on it that needed to be filed down, new gasket and generous amounts of sump sealant fixed that up a treat. Also managed to borrow a pair of 17s to even out the front until I can get my hands on some 5 stud front hubs to go on.
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/jdfront1.jpg

[Krusty the clown] Hey Hey Kids! [Krusty the clown]

I broke out the arch roller on its maiden voyage yesterday. Dal let me practice on his RB'ed 13 first and I was quite pleased with the results. My first ever arch
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/dal1.jpg
Second one came out pretty good too
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/dal2.jpg
Happy with my efforts I moved on to my car, but the rust was obviously worse on mine and I made a bit of a mess of the left arch. Some filler will be needed to tidy up and get rid of the dent that appeared in the rear quarter.
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/badarch.jpg
I was more happy with the other side

Dude just to let you know that the GTST arms on my car didnt really work the have pushed the wheels in some funny directions cant do more than 20mph so they'll be comming straight off :(

And the hole that the front ARB drop link goes into isn't quite in the right place

Just a word of warning

Did you adjust your toe to take advantage of the wider track though? Otherwise you will have some major toe out issues at the front.

There JDM tyte yo! I.e: There is no foglight connected yet! I thinking about getting a red bulb and using one of the reverse lights as a fog. Going to paint the lower panel up but Im unsure if I should paint the reverse light panel or leave it black? What do you think I should do?

Yesterday I managed to get the 5 stud fronts on. New moog ball joints pressed in. The sleeves I made up earlier get pressed in here for the strut bolts
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/fittingsleeve.jpg
Still need to hook up the abs sensors and Ive redrilled the discs to suit, but its all on there. Will place an order for one of dans big brake kits in the week and get them on next, but need to measure internal dia of the wheels to see what I can fit under them.
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/5studallround.jpg

Got the wheels spaced today. Dont know if anyone knows, but these studs on this hub seem extra long, dont know if there standard s14 length or what but there longer than what the 13 has standard.
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/Longstuds.jpg
Even with the 30mm DW spacers on and another 10mm I had laying about the studs only just sit flush
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/everythingon.jpg
But I didnt want them all on the front, which would leave it looking like this
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/studpoke.jpg
I was quite worried at this stage, but then checked th inside of the wheel to see it could fit on. It could thanks to clever little spaces cut out by the wheel manufacturer, phew!
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n215/crxpablos/wheeltakeup.jpg
So heres what the front offset looked like before

Wheels are 17x8 ET40 so effectivley are now ET5. I had a pair of 5mm spacers left so I chucked them on the back and finally gave the old girl a quick wipe over
