View Full Version : My new project. 56K warning
I really don’t know how far to go with this. The plan was to sort the rust, re underseal and generally tidy it up. One thing can lead to another though and I might end up stripping it to the shell and rebuilding everything. I have been looking at shotblasting gear already
The engine has an unusual rattle. Linky

I have spent 2 days trying to find the problem but could really do to sort this before I decide my plan. Here’s some pics of the car and I will update this thread with my progress :)

Another shock headline then '' Petrols S14 goes out in March'' :p
In the wet
Or was that February's trip out? :wack:
Pete went out in the nearly dry, and had a days fun - followed by 2 days of salt removal before going back under its blanket :ghey:
I'm sure Petes S13 willl soon be less rusty, I already know what parts he plans to remove clean and fix and replace, it will look like his old one quicker than you might imagine, ie not next year with the pace of most of us :wack:
hope it works out for you, that s13 is very nice  . the rust will take some work but im sure it'll be worth it.

Probably been repaired/replaced before, note how the "NISSAN" decal is missing from the left hand side...

looking good mate! just out or interest how are you going to replace the bit by the suspension turret, just cut it out, cut a template and weld a new bit in? i gotta do that to mine soon on an engine out and respray weekend:)
good stuff Pete... let me practise on my Italian scrabble then I can come and help you weld it

Basically yes but I bet it's not as bad as it looks when I get the wire brush on it.
Hey Paul I might hold you to that, I have just bought a MIG welder but haven't welded for some time :wack: I have also bought a shotblasting gun. Thought I would try it on a rusty strut. Car should weigh about 900Kg when I have finished :D

This engine rattle is doing my head in though. Would have been nice to sort that before I start on the bodywork.
I think you should shot blast the whole car, so it looks silver, then I'll just swap one night .....
Since the big ends are knacked :smash: I have decided to start stripping the car down. Took the interior out and cleaned the seats with soap powder and a sponge, left it for an hour and hosed them down. I have done this to loads of old car interiors without a problem.

S13 carpet
Rust free spoiler (am I dreaming :wack: )
Drivers window switch assembly
Radio CD player
Interior mirror
Sunroof seal
Next job will be strip the engine bay
Petrol:notworthy I'll be intrested to see the end result.
well i washed and claybar'ed and washed again my car today (and then polished it and it looks sh1t cos i need some swirl remover  )
not quite on a par with what you've been up to though
once again serious hardcore cleaning going on :notworthy
how come you need a new carpet? too fecked?
*edit*
i imagine you will be hard pushed to find a "mint" condition spoiler considering yours looks like that and your boot hasnt taken hold yet and looking at the average s13 tailgate
i'd say your best bet will probably be someone bringing one over from japan if you are going for totally standard looks or even my favourite a genuine 180sx type X spoiler

Try some Zymol from Hellfrauds, it's good for removing swirl marks. Carpet is too fecked, it's got holes in it :( As for the spoiler I am pretty sure I will have to fit an aftermarket one. S14 spolier could be an option I suppose.

I wish I liked red cars, as I've seen quite a few very tidy red S13's for sale  .

edit: sad as it might sound, that's a rather tidy bit of welding on that rear sill (wish I was that good :o )

if i hadnt mauled mine getting it out, you could have had my old s13 carpet FOC, it wasnt in bad condition, i was just too lazy to clean it. S14 carpet is pretty much nearly the same, just a few bits that need pushing in. (i now have s14 carpet. slightly darker, looks much better.)
to be honest - even with the minimal rust you've found, a bit of grinding down the welds and repainting, it'll look spot on. (a lot better than mine :wack: )
if you need some suspension while you're reconning yours - i have a set of standard s13 stuff lying about if you need it.
Not done much today other than clean under the engine bay but is this the oil return from the turbo? Has this been butchered or is this stock? Looks naff to me
http://media.sxoc.com/contributors/petrol/S13_Waxoyl_pics/S13No2/Pics/oil%20return.jpg

Thats stock mate, allows for flex IIRC..

c) all of the above + analness about things being "right" + spent 7 months looking for the perfect car before just buying one that looked close and having the resolve to make it perfect.
In my opinion you know someone just loves the car for what it is when they restore it to standard. :notworthy

I cant drive it when the big ends are out :smash: :smash: :smash: That's s13 ownership for you :D
For those that are interested I have used a combination of wire brush and shotblasting to clean the suspension components up. I have then used a "preclean" which is basically a de greaser before applying a 1K Acid etch primer. This primer gives good adhesion since it etches into the metal.
The gloss coat will be a 2K (paint and hardner) coat that will be tough and durable. Once I have the supension bits finished it's time to start on the shell :D

http://media.sxoc.com/contributors/petrol/S13_Waxoyl_pics/S13No2/Pics/33.jpg
LMAO @ the painted bolts :smash:
have you painted your nuts aswell :p
Pete can you explain how you are going to do the bolts up without removing any paint from the heads please
:wack: :smash: :smash: :smash:
If you put a very thin layer of paint on, more like a dust coat then it doesn't tend to chip as easily.
PAS pipes were not easy to clean up :smash: Plastic coating had peeled off and they were a bit corroded. 40's grade wet and dry sorted it though:)

Pete's doing that all on his drive, no cover, garage ect.

About all i can say.. good luck and i cant wait for the thread to continue!
I cant wait for him to finish, Pete can then crack on with Vez's, then help me with my BE's too before Spa :D We'll keep him busy :wack:
I just did all that to my car last summer, but even after 1 winter on the roads i can see little spots of rust on some of the suspension arms. I didn't use underseal as I thought it all looked quite good. I'm going to take it all to bits again and try powder coating this time to see if it lasts better.
Of course if I stored the car indoors and only took it out in sunny conditions with gravel free roads it would probably help.

Rust under the seam sealer in a couple of places
http://media.sxoc.com/contributors/petrol/S13_Waxoyl_pics/S13No2/Pics/36.jpg
Cleaned up with wire brush & angle grinder. Then wiped everything down with white spirit. it's amazing how far the rust had travelled behind the seam sealer

2 coats of acid etch primer on the bare metal

Pete your mad. But that will be the tidiest S13 in the UK for sure! Fair play to you.
My S13 is in similar condition to what yours was when you started but without the rust on the rear. I think I'm going to have the take my spoiler off and check now just hope it doesnt break cause I don't want to have to replace it right now
I've run out of things to say, but you know I'm watching  and will pop round as soon as I get chance ....
Hmmm the S13 spoiler has problems. It has steel plates inside it which are used to fasten it to the tailgate with plastic clips. The problem is that these plates corrode, swell and end up corroding the tailgate. If you look down your spoiler and see ripples then the metal inside it is corroded. If you want some pics of the clips that hold the spoiler on then I will post em up

This sort of refurb is not as difficult as you might think if you are handy with the spanners. It really is only a matter of unbolting everything, wire brushing and angle grinding to get rid of the rust and painting. As far as painting goes the key is to use a pre clean before spraying the primer on. This degreases and ensures the primer adheres well. It’s available from a body shop supplier. Suspension components could be brush painted with Hammerite smooth. It does take time and patience however.

What colour should I paint the calipers? I intend to fit 5 spoke 17" rims to the car so the calipers will be visible.

Another vote for red!
In a moment of insanity I did mine in yellow. And am now just waiting for the time and weather to re-paint the red!!
What would the going rate be for the petrol effect on an S13 then? lol

I'm going to take it all to bits again and try powder coating this time to see if it lasts better..Is that a plastic that melts on to hot metal? If it gets a split or chip the water gets under it, lifts it off the metal and rots everything away out of sight under the plastic coating.
Petrol is right a coat of Hammerite smooth (black - let Bigtone use the red paint on his undercarriage).

Have you got the spoiler sitting flush in the corners? Me and Paul Roscoe have sorted my boot out (although needs touching up again), but looking at the spoiler it doesnt look like it will line up nicely in the corners due to the shape of the boot lid. I am not explaining this very well am I?
What I mean is the bootlid is flat ish. But the spoiler isnt. Now the supports where the 3 bolts are on either side look problematic too me, in my 2 minutes of knowledge. Does the edge of these need shaving down to get the supports to fit flush?
(Have had a long and tiring weekend in the lakes, so not able to type things as I am seeing them typed in my head!)
I know what you mean :) This is the problem ;)

Hmmmm could I fill this with Sikoflex? Or is the gap too big?
climbers_uk
02-05-2006, 08:37
If I remember rightly it would probably need a fair old bit of sikoflex, to fill the gap. Is it secure like that? That isnt a sarcastic question or anything, its genuine. I havent actualy drilled the holes and tried yet.
Not sure iirc but i'm sure that Shin Inoue's (sp) from Pro-Specs Skyline has higher Nismo spoiler ars/stands, that are about 1-3"s bigger than the standard ones??
Is it secure like that?
It's bolted on but it won't sit flush to the tailgate because it hits the rear wings. I have had to space it off :(

Thats what i was trying to say when i was typing gibberish yesterday.:wack:
I have seen someone else do this before, and they filed a fair bit off the part that hits the wing to lower the whole lot down a bit. I cant remember who it was now, will have a search and see if i can dig up the thred.

New big ends in, pick up pipe on, new oil return hose pushed over the downpipe. Tip - tighten the jubilee clips in stages, if you try to tighten them in one go it might not seal properly. The clip bites into the hose and after an hour or so it's easy to nip them up.

Decided to fill the gap in the spoiler with fiberfil. It's a fiberglass resin with chopped strands in it, you just add hardener.
I masked the hatch up with paper and fitted the spoiler with the spacing nuts in place. Then I filled the gap

Sorted the hatch out today and took plenty.
The hatch has hammer rash on it. Looks like the spoiler has dented it and also stretched it on the mounting points
http://media.sxoc.com/contributors/petrol/S13_Waxoyl_pics/S13No2/Pics/70.jpg
Ground & wire brushed rust out. I don’t tend to use much pressure with the angle grinder as it can overheat the panel and buckle. Beware of sparks on the glass – it can mark it
http://media.sxoc.com/contributors/petrol/S13_Waxoyl_pics/S13No2/Pics/71.jpg
Time to prepare to fill the holes. I decided to use fibreglass rather than welding since I would have probably buckled the hatch. I removed the wax protection from underneath with pre clean and roughed up the surface to provide a key

Mate, you have far too much time on your hands!
Good work so far, although I think it would have been better to weld the holes in the tailgate, to stop the metal from distorting you can just spot weld in the plates, dabbing with a wet cloth as you go to keep the metal cool.

I appreciate I have too much time on my hands, that’s why I started this project. Maybe I should explain. My mega boring job leaves me with quite a lot of spare time but my working day is fragmented….. An hour here, an hour there, which leaves me a few hours in the day to do something. I thought this project was a good way to fill my time. To be honest I could have gone out and bought a brand new S2000 or a 350Z but where's the fun in that?

Yep, I did this too, using the chopped fibres in resin stuff (P38 I think??). Even though I sanded the inside & outside areas around the holes to give a good key, it has now cracked to the point where I could probably push the 'plug' out of the hole.
I will be welding mine up when I can be arsed to take the tailgate off again...

Cool. Rattle sorted? :)
No Synthetic 2k but when it's all waxoled, it will soon look a mess.
Yep B-E rattle has gone :) though both heat shields are gonna have to come off :whip: I will probably stick a decat and Goose on eventually though.

Make sure you get an old one though, the new ones are too loud IMO.

They didn't do an oval pipe one for the S13 AFAIK, but there is a new Blue Flame/Mongoose system that has a 2.75" bore. It still has the twin pipe design but doesn't look quite as nice IMO and it's definitely louder. Probably a better quality exhaust though :)

That is a big arch gap, what's going on there? If I was asked to guess I'd say it had no engine in it, but it obviously has. I take it's just not moved since it was set down and therefore hasn't settled yet? :)
EDIT: Looks fantastic btw, wish I had the spare time, a drive and the patience
Interior is stripped out  Going to have to compensate by getting a couple of pie eaters in the car whilst I tourque everything up :D

Thanks for the kind comments guys :)
The first job I did was strip the interior - this was the ride height after :( Just shows how heavy it is. Dash is still in BTW.

Making a piece to fit was not easy :(
http://media.sxoc.com/contributors/petrol/S13_Waxoyl_pics/S13No2/Pics/128.jpg
Holes guessed for spot welds. This is the area where it bolts to the car so it needs to be flush. Drilling sheet metal is easier on a block of wood - it doesn't grab :)

Got to do some proper work now
Did you do all that work with the car on stands and on your drive? If so :notworthy :notworthy
Got to admire your handy work:clap:
Aerial problem
The aerial connector in the boot is just a typical plug and socket using a single coax cable. The cable runs up through the B pillar and then disappears behind the headlining. This is what I have got behind the console  It's a coax with another smaller coax cable attached. Has this been modded somewhere? I want to connect it to standard radio.
Am I better buying an aerial extension cable and running that?
http://media.sxoc.com/contributors/petrol/S13_Waxoyl_pics/S13No2/Pics/125.jpg
Thanks
The thickest coaxialcable is for the electric antenna, the thinner one is for the antenna in the hatch window.

I really don’t know how far to go with this. The plan was to sort the rust, re underseal and generally tidy it up. One thing can lead to another though and I might end up stripping it to the shell and rebuilding everything. I have been looking at shotblasting gear already
The engine has an unusual rattle. Linky
http://www.sxoc.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=208811
I have spent 2 days trying to find the problem but could really do to sort this before I decide my plan. Here’s some pics of the car and I will update this thread with my progress :)
The good....
And yes that's 3 "Datsuns" on my drive now :D
Why don't you bite the Bullet and go to Norris for an engine then never look back

Thanks  I guess the stock radio must have had 2 antenna inputs then? Is my best bet to connect both the rear window and aerial connectors together and connect them to my new radio?

Good question
I thought long and hard about this project before I started. I was really tempted to get the shell blasted and build it up from there. A friend of mine quoted me a grand to spray the bare shell to a “better than factory finish” and that included materials. I was tempted but imagine having that sat on your drive? Where would you go? I decided to try to rebuild it on the “cheap” I really can’t see the point in going mad because at the end of the day these cars are not worth much
I have fitted new big end bearings and the rattle has gone :)
It's easy to buy soloutions in like a Norris engine but to be honest they come at a price. I don't mind spending the time and effort on this car but I really don't want to plough loads of wonga in..... and not get it back if I sell ;)
