knackered rack? Low on fluid?

could be a split power steering hose. I had this a couple of years ago. Or the pump may be on its last legs:(

air-lock in the fluid, loose belt, cruddy old fluid that's never been changed, knackered bushes with lots of play to take up

Never experianced it on a SX but this is normally caused by the rack failing internally. Does it do it in one particular direction or both?

Without looking it's hard to say. I would bet it's the rack.
Have a visual check for leaks. If there's none you have two choises
1) Change the rack for a new one
2) Change the pump first. This is the chepest and quickest you should be able to get one from here for about £10 + p&p.

Don't forget to flush the PAS system. If there has been a mechanical failure the swarf will have traveled through everything
