Right....

After trying ALL guides to doing the lights on while sleepy thing and finding that NONE (even the video) of them work I decided to find a way myself.

I spent a little time thinking then it came to me, a way to get the lights on while sleepy AND get each side to wink individually, also you can have just your sidelights on without popping the lights up. (saves removing the ECU, even though I had done this previously (thanks for the guide by the way)). Best of it all is that it only took me an hour start to finish and is just as easy than most other ways. Another good point is that you only need some decent wire and 2 single pole/single throw switches, total cost £7.
1.
Open the bonnet and disconnect the battery.
While standing at the front of the car, look down the gap between the radiator and bumper. On each side right next to the lights you can see the headlight motor, down a bit from there you will see this

2.
Get a pair of pliers and push the clip out.

3.
All you have to do is cut the brown wire (will have 12v running through it when lights are switched on) and solder wire long enough to run to where ever you want your switch.

4.
Do on both motors (ie left and right headlight)(clip is in the same place on both sides).

5. Run wires to where you want to put your switches to be (I put mine under the fog light button) and solder toggles onto these.

6.
Reconnect battery

7. I put mine to on the same sides as the headlights, so when you flick the left 1 it wont move and when I flick the right 1, same as.

Left switch off.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v102/kwamenace/Image051.jpg
Right switch off.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v102/kwamenace/Image053.jpg
Both off and lights on while sleepy.

If you leave both switches on the lights will work normally.
Also If you have left/right switched off when you flash 1 side will raise and lower on the timer (wink propperly). You can also have the lights turned on when 1 side is winking (didnt show that on the photos)

Just to make setting them at the right height easier I pulled the headlight open button and cut the brown wire (as seen on another thread), making sure to cap the ends.

I hope this helps everybody that hasent been able to get other guides to work (ALL of them...lol)
P.s. Sorry about pic quality, Did them on my phone

The blue/ brown wire is the wire I used to run to my switch (Its 2 core flex, used in bedside lamps etc....) Cut the brown on the HL motors, connect a piece of wire long enough to reach your switch to each side of the cut brown from the HLs (my blue/brown flex), solder flex to your switch.

PM me if I dont make any sense...lol

so how do you make them sleepy lights?

kwamenace

Just flick the switches halfway through the cycle. I also did the HL pop button trick to make (brown wire with silver tags behind the HL button) just to make height selection easier

So basiclly you are switching the feed to the light motor with the switch and cutting the supply before it gets the chance to open fully. It looks a lot better in sleepy mode with the lights on I'm going to order a few toggle switches and try this. Thanks for the guide.

yep, just did ;)

only problem I have is that I can't turn my lights off... If I do, my headlights go to normal position (fully open) and then close automatically.

Yeah you can. Put the new switches in the off position, press the valet light switch or whatever the big button is called, flick the new switches to get the lights to the right height, then turn off the valet switch.

ah good.

think il do this, seems the easiest compared to wiring to the relays or wherever it is.

thanks

Maybe I can do it because I hadn't cut the brown wire in the button. There wasn't any need because you change change the height of each individually anyway, so its easy to level them.

just put a switch inline at each plug ?

one for each side ?

think that will do, they never sit right if not manually adjustable for each side.

thanks

Yes ive done it :) i figured out that the brown wire was cut, hence the trouble of not having sleepy eyes with lights off.

It works great now :)
ive tried the japanese youtube sleepy eyes guide before that, but the headlights woulndt go up evenly.

Kwamenace's guide is much easier and more effective for the older headlight motors ;)

rather than running the wires through from the front of the car surely there is a wire from either headamp ecu or timing module that can be used as the light motors must recieve a signal from there?

possible intercepting the retractor switch?

headlight ecu seems to output 7 volts when on sidelights.....
