A fair while back my 110,000 mile s14a started using a bit of oil... to cut a long story short it got steadily worse to the point where it'd go from full to empty in 300 miles.
I searched and read on here for ages and asked almost everyone I knew loads of questions. Everyone I spoke to and from everything I read up on here I decided the turbo oil seals were knackered.

New T28R fitted 2 weeks back.

Since then there's been no smoke when sat at the lights anymore and it didn't use any oil in the 300 mile journey from Dundee to Leeds on Friday night.

However, Tonight I checked the oil having driven back to Dundee last night and it's below the bottom limit

Seems I changed my turbo for nowt.

Unless of course the turbo AND the valve stem oil seals / rings are knackered :wack:

So - knowing all that and the fact that there is VERY little play in the t28 I took off, but the intercooler pipework was dripping with oil, do you think my turbo was to blame? I was expecting the turbo to be blatently obviously knackered.

Midgers, sorry to here about the probs hopefully it will be fix in time for dastek on the 20th.

What are your compression levels like or have you not tested this yet, just thinking it might be blown piston rings. hope this helps.

tested compression a while back at a meet, it wasn't too bad... should do it again really I suppose.

Have you got flexi oil pipe to turbo ?

If not, the rigid one might have been cracked during turbo change and has taken a couple of weeks to open up.
It wouldn't be the first time.

I got flexi pipes when I got the turbo too :)
Wish it was that simple :D

Take it there is no obvious leaks, eg from gauge senders etc

Does it smoke at all? if you leave it idling for a while etc?

Midgers

nope no gauges and no pools of oil or drips anywhere. the only time I notice smoke of any kind now is if I'm on boost and someone is following close behind - but that could just be normal exhaust fumes couldn't it. Defffo hasn't smoked at all when stood. I left it running for 10 - 15 minutes 4 times earlier this evening whilst i nipped in and out of shops looking for a memory card for my ps2 (Another story I'll have a rant about later if I can be arsed) Every time I came back to the car I was expecting clouds of smoke like before - but there was none :)

So would you say its using less oil than it was before the turbo swap?

It could always be more than one cause for it. If its anything to worry about it will probably make itself known sooner or later :(

Check the rad and expansion tank to make sure it doesnt smell of oil or have mayo in it :(
Other than that do another comp test and see what that is

Midgers

it definately is using less oil now than before the turbo swap. It would have been empty - and has been the last few times I've made the trip to Leeds on a Friday evening. I've been spending as much on oil as on petrol recently :wack:

I'll do another Comp test
Thanks for all the suggestions  You are, as always, complete stars :notworthy

if you're using that much oil it must be fissing out, can you not trace it be to the source........

Sounds like its breathing a HELL of a lot if your IC pipework is full of oil...

Midgers

well not full... but heavily coated you know.... I have a pic at home i'll post it tonight

id say if the sr piping is the same as the ca, that for there to be oil in the ic pipes its either came from the turbo being knacked (most likely) or excess pressure in the crankcase causing the breathers to fill up.(rings)

u got a catch tank midgy?
if not, bodge one and see if it solves the problem.

Midgers

I haven't got a catch tank... I'll try that tho, cheers Kev :)

If so give me a txt and I'll give you the number of the guy that sorted my engine out, he'll find your problem for you

That's the ammount of oil we're talking about. That's the intake elbow that bolts onto the face of the turbo.

Reckon I'd fill a catch tank in no time :wack::D

so who's got the personalised plate on a saphire blue s14a with a big exhaust in dundee?

Midgers
02-11-2004, 18:52
dunno mate - there's a "Was it You?" section to ask in tho ;):D

Kev
02-11-2004, 20:33
thats alot of oil mate.
take the intake off the turbo and see if u can see oil down there.
if so then its breathers being pressurised imo

Midgers
02-11-2004, 20:56
and definately rings then?

Kev
03-11-2004, 00:43
almost definitely.
still wait till we check it with the tester mate.
could be a breather blockage or similar also.

can someone in the know comment on the sr breather system?
