View Full Version : A tricky insurance question...

Heres one for you lot....

My understanding of motor insurance is that the minimum requirement is Third PartyOnly which covers other cars/ people/ property that you may hit.
So, does that mean that if you have Third Party Any Vehicle as an extra on your regular Fully Comp policy, that any car can be driven even if it is not insured by another person, ie not insured at all?
I reckon that you can because you are meeting the laws minimum requirements using your own insurance policy but friends reckon the other car needs to have its own insurance for my policy to be valid in it.

What do you guys think???

Could be a cheap way of driving a 200 (if not bothered about theft or fire that is :eek http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif

I thought that you are covered (third party) on any car as long as you have the permission of the owner and the car has tax/mot.

I asked my insurance about this once, the car that you borrow has to be insured by someone else.

Otherwise we'd all have loads of cheap cars & only 1 insurance policy.

We'll that's what my insurance guy said anyway. Make your own mind up.

In order for the car to be on the road you need to tax it, obviously you need to supply insurance documents specific to that car to get a tax disc.

The cheapest way is obviously to get your Grandmother to insure it, give her the cash and stick yourself on as a named driver...

I hear Saga do some good deals for the over 50's! http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif

Steve,

Your right, the minimun requirement is third party cover, so you can drive any car - insured by the owner or not!

I asked the police about it and they said as long as you have 3rd party cover you are OK, as it is the driver covered not the car, it just means the car would not be covered in the event of an accident.

Taxing a car - simple, take out cover, get certificate, get tax, cancel policy - preferably before you have had to pay for it, get them to send an emergency cover note out, ie next day delivery, and say the cheque is in the post. Get the tax the next day, and then say you dont want the policy, at worst all they can do is charge a months insurance, but more commonly they dont bother chasing it.

It may be that Im just a whippersnapper upstart, but Ive been told (or was, by my last company) that I couldnt drive other peoples cars, with or without their permission
I checkedwith Tescos and it would have cost $$££ to get the ability
Id say phone up your company and ask them

Sorry, you do need the owners permission, but the car itself doesnt need to be insured, as long as the driver has the minimum level of cover (3rd party) then you are ok in the event of an accident, it just means the car you are driving will not be paid for if it gets smashed, and it is also not covered if it get nicked.

Tesco gave me this 'drive other cars 3rd party' thing for free Doc'. I have only ever had one policy that didn't have this.

Tesco wouldnt do that for me, they said they only do it for drivers over 25 http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/frown.gif

I sorted mine with adrian flux cos its due next week, £850, FC Protected NCB, drive any car (3rd party) and breakdown cover with £400 excess. Some mods declared http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/rolleyes.gif , Im 23 and have 5 years NCB and 3 pts for an SP30 4 years ago.

It's all legal as long as you are driving the car. If you park it then it is not insured, so if some blind person walks into it and breaks their leg, then you are up the creek.... or at least the owner is!

It amazes me that

1) A car needs to be insured to be on the road, in spite of the fact that any claim against it would probably involve injury from rusty bodywork, which may invalidate the insurance anyway.

2) No insurance company I know of offers third party only without a driver. They will sell you 'laid-up' policies, but your car has to be off the road.

Incidentally, when I got done for keeping a car with no insurance etc. I found out that as far as the law is concerned, the definition of what constitutes "A car" is determined by what you intend doing with it in future! It matters not if the engine is out, it has no axles or wheels, or any other sensible criteria, if you intend using it as a car again then it is a car, if not then it isn't. The case before mine had four cars, and he got 6 points for each 'cause he had a lazy brief. I had 3 cars and a handy lawyer, and got 6 points for all three. (Didn't have the bottle to claim I was scrapping them all!) As far as I know they don't follow it up, as 1 of the "scrappers" went back on the road........

SAGA are cheap, however, they will only allow drivers over 30 to use the car on their insurance or as a named driver.

See above comments from myself and Mr Stueemac - not with Tescos it isnt (if you are under 25) so Id guess its not totally clear cut with other companies either http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/frown.gif

speeding points come off your licence after 3 years. I just sent my licence off and it came back clean (after 3 years that is)
http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif

The rehabilitation of offenders act states that fines (including driving offences) are spent after 5 years. Although they can be removed from the licence after 3 they are still counted against you as far as a criminal record is concerned.

Surely it only needs to have third party insurance on it if it is not stored on private property.

I don't have 3rd party cover on other cars either 'cos I'm under 25. I did with one insurer though... can't remember who.

I want to get a second car (A-reg volvo 240GL!) to tow my speedboat!!!! I asked Adrian Flux for a quote - it was £100 cheaper than my current cover + driving other cars.

I don't understand this Third party any car ****e, ie. I had Third Party Only insurance on my Mini when I was 19, which had a TPO any car on the policy (CIS insurance). This meant that I could jump in a mates Skyline (if I had a mate with a Skyline!) and drive that, but I couldn't drive my 200sx that was registered in my name. WTF is that all about???

Read the small print - most insurance companies won't cover you TP on someone elses car if it is registered at the same address.
Nearly got caught out on that one myself.

Think you'll find it's kind of an emergency type thing. So if you're stuck and need to drive someone elses car for whatever reason you have minimum cover for that purpose.
The reason they restrict it to cars owned and registered to other households is that if the car is kept at your house then you are more likely to drive it, and it is then deemed as a car regularly available to you, so you should have it insured specificially for you i.e. you should be a named driver.

In any case the vehicle has to specifically be insured by someone for anyone else to drive it.
