Hello (again)!

After getting DSL through Zen Internet a while ago, and having a great time, it's now come to a rather horrible end. It's all going rather pear shaped and as far as I can tell, it's all due to BT (once again), as their main link, or at least their link to Zen, has become worse than soiled pants.

Was wondering if anyone else on DSL in the UK is having severe latency / speed issues? Normally I'd be getting 30-50ms pings to various machines / servers and the like, and I'd happily be playing something like return to castle wolf right now, but right now, with nothing else running, i'm getting pings of around 190 - 210ms to local servers and this board - not so good, in fact, about as good as my modem. And Zen have some nice small print saying they don't guarantee a decent level of service. Guess I have to sit this crud out until they upgrade the links (which I think is due 12th December but err.. don't hold breath?).

So - anyone else having problems like this?

Actual downloading isn't a problem, so long as it's literally a download and not something streaming. Splitting it into a couple parts in something like Flashget, I can easily pop 100k/sec (1mbit line), but individual files / shoutcasting - oh dear. oh dear oh dear.

First test on that page:
Your throughput 64630 cps
Not too bad ..
(Date: Tuesday, November 27th, 2001
Time: 17:55:59
Download Time: 0.541 seconds
Average Throughput: 64630 cps
*Estimated Connection Speed: greater than 128,000 bps
)

Big Test:
This page was loaded in 8.713000000000001 seconds.
Your throughput 55350 cps
Typical ISDN 64K 7500 cps
Typical ISDN 128K 15000 cps
Typical 10M Ethernet 480000 cps

Not too bad. Gonna test one of the DSLreports.com tests now, these usually don't fare too good here:

** Speed 266(down)/185(up) kbps **
(At least 5 times faster than a 56k modem)
Finish).

Great. that's great. I feel so happy. http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/frown.gif

Using cable modem at the moment and its bloody great, getting download speed of 37 kb per second and always connecting to the internet -24 hours a day, well until the
DHCP lease on my IP address expires (ie every
6 hours,) I hope my ISP does not start getting stingy and does not start puttings as many people as possible on the same network with the same bandwidth, thats what
usually happens...then download rates dramatically decrease...sounds like what has happened to you andy ...excess people hogging the bandwith.

Home ADSL does suck a little, with 50:1 ratio on the buggar! So.. you cant complain unless you get less than 1Mb/s / 50 = 20kb/s!!

Although this is the therotical minimum, your contract will say this is 'acceptable!'.
I have just signed up for business ADSL for my Cheltenham office through Mistral. Good company, and actually have a QoS!! (Something I think you will find most will not have!)

Basically it will all be down to BT, but overloading ADSL is pretty impossible, as its like a network switch with 50 ports.. and bandwidth is shared evenly.
Used to be a problem (bug) in the Cisco switchs BT used.. all been sorted now.. apparently! http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif

Whats the latency like using ADSL? Big ping times?

ADSL has REALLY low ping times, like cable modems. Although, this does of course depend how close you are to the local exchange.
Think mistral guarentee something like 60ms to Europe, and 120 to US sites.

Don't know if other suppliers can guarentee this though, as they may allow home users on the same netwrok which Mistral do not.

Richie,

By bandwith clogg , I mean the amount of people using "copper" at any one time, Imay be wrong but ADSL works via copper telphone links, when more people use the same lenght of copper the shared bahdwith usage drops, so
when every joe in your area uses puts
an entire office on an adsl connection the average bandwith available per person drops..that is unless the telco decides to provide more copper.. tell me if I am wrong I may be missing something....

cheers

Guys,

go to http://www.dslreports.com
they have speed tests and tweaking utilities and a very good FAQ and Forum.

Have got BT Openworld ADSL myself, and generally is is very good indeed. Apart from the last couple of weeks where my gateway went down. Spent 20 mins waiting for their "technical" support people to answer the number.

They have had very simply training and know jack about computers.....

Apart from that I am happy. I ended up roaming to another gateway and got in.....

Yeah thats right.. more people use it the less bandwidth.. although in an office it different..

For a start you only get 20:1 ration with ADSL for businesses, and also generally in an office not 'that' many people are dl'ing stuff all day.. hence plenty of bandwidth to go around.. Home users on the other hand spend all day dl'ing **** for their mate!! http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/wink.gif

Should of mentioned.. read up on TDM.. You'd be suprised to learn how much your 'copper' is REALLy shared with ya neighbours!! let alone the different bandwidths along it!

Geeze im boring!

Oh, and you dont share the copper wire, you share the ADSL 'switch' which has a set bandwidth to its parent switch.. if u see what I mean?!

9 minutes of bliss eh http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/frown.gif

Proberly BT pissing about with switches and what not, or changing the architecture. If they are bringing up another area, they may re-route you though a backup network whilst they do work. (Hopefully anyway!)
