self diagnostic on ecu

youp,

can anyone please tell me if you need that little bit of kit which plugs in to the fuse box (i think) and has a green and red LED on it thats in the s13 workshop manual under the EF&EC section for doing self diagnostic, or whether you just need to be able to get to the ecu itself?

also can anyone tell me where the ecu actually is if you don't neeed this bit of kit so i can try and find out whats up with my car?

thanks very much in advance

ECU in passenger kickwell on the left.
*start engine and allow to idle
*If engine does not start, Crank engine for four seconds
*Turn diagnostic mode selector on ECU fully clockwise
*After LEDs have flashed three times: turn diagnostic mode selector fullly
anti clockwise
*check that LEDs flash
*Red LED indicate LH digit
*Green LED indicates the rRH digit
*For example. One red flash followed by three green flashesindicate trouble code 13 (Engine coolant temp sensor)
*Count the LED flashes. Note the trouble codes
*Switch ignition off

You sure? Mine's deffo a flat head screw on the ECU.

Or do you mean to get the trim off to get to the ECU?

hi steve,

what do you mean by erase codes?
is that after you've fixed what the problem is, so the ecu now knows its fixed?

cheers, ben

Yeah, when you've sorted the fault(s) you need to erase the codes that have been stored in the ECU.
Did you find anything wrong?

is this the fault list for SR20DET powered cars also.. Because i found a completely different one today on another Nissan site.. The number didnt match up with the once steve say. ex. 32 is starter signal according to steve.. but for what i found 32. is EGR system... But maybe there is a difference in the two engines fault codes specifying?

Nah, they're just the wrong codes in the list above

The only S13 codes are:

11 Crank Position sensor
12 Air Mass Sensor (MAF)
13 Coolant Temp Sensor
21 Ignition Signal
32 Starter Signal
34 Knock Sensor
43 Throttle Posision Sensor (TPS)
55 No fault found

And the extra ones for the S14:
26 Boost pressure sensor
54 Automatic Transmission

The EGR doesn't have a fault code as it's not self-monitored (you're not confusing 'Diagnostic Procedure Number, with 'trouble code' when reading the manual, are you?)

I might be... But i still struggeling.. My car hasnt a " check engine" light in the dash.. And it doesnt have the Little screw and LED´s on the ECU... Sp how the hell do i check this out!?!?!!?! There is a consult plug, but nothing flashing in the dash when shortet. And when i turn the ignition on, there is no "check engine" light illuminating. Its a ´91 180SX RPS13 with SR20DET engine in it. Jap import..

Cant i check my fault codes then?
