Imagine how many dead birds you could pick up around there.

Apparently with some early radar systems, the birds that flew in front of them were fried by the intense microwaves

Supposedly you can use it to create or remove clouds by creating an interference pattern to insert or remove large amounts of energy at specific points. Can also be used as an energy weapon. According to the same conspiracy theorists the USA uses HAARP to do the same stuff

I say supposedly, because there hasn't been any published research on this since Nikola Tesla died. It may be theoretically possible, but relies on a certain amount of unconfirmed suppositions.

It's probably just a bog standard over the horizon radar.

Why do you think they built that thing right next to Chernobyl power plant

I will admit I have little to zero knowledge on this sort of stuff, but having read James Rollins "Black Order" I am, now, more than intrigued at the sort of stuff that floats about that is relatively unknown, especially the older stuff.

Some of the stuff in this thread is incredible.

Was that not a prototype or derivative of the P38 Lightning?

not at all the XF11 had a wingspan of 101 feet, twice that of the lightning.

the powerplants were significantly different, as the XF11 had a 71 litre four row, three thousand horsepower radial engine, as opposed to P-38 which had a 28 litre V12 allison at 1700 horsepower massive differences in power

the P-38 i believe was also designed be the legendary Lockheed designer kelly johnson, who went on to design the A12, the U2, Sr-71, F-117 and the C-130 hercules

the XF-11 was designed and built by Howard Hughes

Well, that's just it. Everything about me wants to hate it, and yet (and maybe it's because I'm up to my neck in an "interesting" project) I find I cannot actively dislike it.

I wouldn't be surprised if there still are at certain places. Phased array RADAR systems have massive power outputs. The one we host in the UK at RAF Fylingdales, for example, has an effective radiated power somewhere between seven and eight megawatts, or about 2.5 MW per side (three sides). It comes with a range of over 3000 miles too

The beast that the Russians built is bigger. Much bigger. It's also a lot more flimsy - look at the guy ropes stopping the radiating elements from flapping around, and it only points one way. In any case, you're going to feel the warmth on your skin some considerable distance downwind of that thing.

Taking into account the efficiency, or lack thereof, it must have used a good percentage of the output from Chernobyl when it was operating.
