Smile Changed diff oil today & purged cooler!

Well Iv'e been talking about it for a while and today I bit the bullet.
I was concerned about changing the diff oil without purging the cooler but it was easy really.
If you are going to DIY this I would recommend you take the filler plug out first which is what I did. What a b***ard!
Eventually I did it but out came the oil - all over the kin place! Hmmm made me thing about things here... I came to the conclusion that the oil cooler only kicks in over 75Mph and when the diff oil is >135 C ish. I think that the pump has never kicked in on this car resulting in the increased diff oil level. In other words the diff radiator had emptied into diff itself.

The rest of the job was easy though. It's just a matter of disconnecting the cooler hoses and draining whats left.

After filling the diff and re connecting the hoses I started the pump. The manual suggests disconecting the loom in the boot. This involved removing the CD changer!
I removed the boot off the red wire on the pump and ran a cable from the battery via a fuse and the pump started.

What was interesing is that the pump seemed to be OK at first, but then it started making strange noises - obviously cavitating. After a few restarts I heard the flow of oil around the cooler

I had to re fill the diff with quite a bit of oil since the cooler was now full.

Hope this is useful

BTW my SX has done 40K miles

Well done mate So how did you get the filler plug out? Last time I looked it did indeed look a complete b@stard

Cheers

I just used a 1/2" ratchet, I think it's actually a metric square but the 1/2" works fine.

I'm a little concerned hearing that the diff cooler won't do anything unless it registers over 135C and the cars going over 75mph. Obviously when drifting, u very rarely go 75mph, but the diff get's just about the most grief a diff can have....... What are peoples thoughts on finding some way of making the diff cooler come on before 75mph and 135 C??????

Can any1 confirm that it is 75mph and 135C, or is it 75mph or 135C????

After ages of farting about I used a short socket extension.
I changed the gearbox & engine oil and all but that diff plug was something else!

Interesting note:

When I took the drain plug's out of both the gearbox & Diff there was some slight deposits on the magnet.
I think it was worth it!

I can!

Manual says...

Diff cooler on at 130C.Off at 120C However the pump will not operate at speeds less than 75 MPH.
That is from the manual.
The diff's "grief" aint about temp - Its about "hammer"

hammer = heat , you could make up a new system easier enough, you could use an oil filter thermostatic sandwich plate or the like?

Really? That does surprise me! I would have thought that it would work solely on temperature

Hmmmm this does make Sense. If you short out pins 3 & 4 on differential oil cooler relay 2 (T15) it will ignore the speed and switch on solely on temperature

The relay incidentaly in the RHS of the boot.
Relay 1 is blue.
relay 2 is black this is the one

went to change the gearbox oil and diff oil at the weekend. The gearbox oil was VERY VERY EASY! All plugs on the gearbox came undone VERY VERY EASY! A two minute job!

So I went to do the diff, WELL WOT A FOOKIN crock of S**T both plugs were rusted in solid! Couldnt get them to move wot so ever! So I never changed it! doh!

As a general rule, I always attempt to remove the filler plug first then attempt to remove the drain plug.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Take the 2 wires that are connected to pins 3 & 4 and join em together.

To check it's working get a piece of wire and connect 1 end to the chassis and the other to the diff temp switch. The easiest way to do this is pull back the black insulation on the switch and connect the wire. The diff temp switch is the 1 on the left looking from the back of the car. The one on the right is low diff oil level. Switch on the ignition & the pump should run

I have emailed SKIDS the relevant drawings.
I'm gonna have to become a member then I can post Ya all pics
