I think Pete got it exactly right in post #1, the sound of a Spitfire always makes all the hairs on my arms stand on end

BRM V16. The sound is from Nick Mason's "Into The Red", http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZMPDCNyQxE

I'm biased, but a unsilenced TVR V8 does it for me: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4fHVw4-jh8

some of those tractor pullers use 2 RR Merlin Engines and you are stood about 20 yds from the action. sweet

Someone mentioned Chevy V8 - again try 5 of these about 20 yds away - they actually cause pain.

also try these - been posted before - General Lee Audi

I'm pretty sure that's the guy who writes for PPC. It's a Rover Meteor (n/a version of the merlin) that he's putting in an SD1.

The fact this thread has gone to nearly 80 posts would make people that aren't petrol heads laugh, or cry I'm sure.

How come no one has mentioned the sick sound of a top fuel motor on tickover, or the gut dissolving hammer blow as it goes by at full chat?

Then have a read of this post (), where there's a link to one being taken on track. You can hear it around the entire circuit . It is an utterly fantastic noise . Not bad from a 1500cc engine . NB: They are all taken from the same CD & book mentioned in TVR Rob's post
