JDM S15 turbos - myths dispelled
I keep getting conflicting information regarding S15 turbos, particularly about them supposedly being ceramic and susceptible to shatter at 1+ bar.
B0ll0cks. I've just gone and got some more info off the Oz Nissan Silvia forum. There has been confusion over there about which cars the T28 BBs were fitted to in the past, but I am satisfied with this info: Quote:

Banzai fella's right you know
![]() I'd heard that some of the late S14a came with BB turbos too because some of the aussie lads were quite surprised when they whipped them out but I didn't realise it was only autos (I spent a couple of years revising on the Aussie mailing list before discovering SXOC )

Wow.
You from the NZ Silvia BB? Thanks for the info. ........................................ Turbo Jap PS13: 14411-50F00 (non BB) AU/NZ S14/CS14: 14411-75F00 (non BB?) Jap S14: 14411-69F00 (non BB, same as Euro S14) Jap CS14: 14411-82F01 (non BB, same as Euro S14a) Jap Autech/NISMO 270R: 14411-RP801 (BB, same turbo as early S15 MT but different part no) Jap/NZ S15 early: 14411-91F00 MT (BB) and 14411-69F00 AT (non BB, same as Euro & Jap S14) Jap/NZ/Au S15 late: 14411-75F00 (non BB, same as Euro & NZ S14 and same for both Auto and manual) Injectors Jap PS13: 16600-50F00 16600-50F10 (manufacturer difference) (370cc) Jap S14: 16600-21U00 (s/s 16600-21U01) (370cc) Jap CS14: 16600-91F00 (480cc) NISMO 270R: 16600-04500 (s/s 16600-91F00) Jap/NZ/AU S15 MT 16600-91F00 (480cc) Jap/NZ/AU S15 AT 16600-21U01 (370cc) *BB: Ball bearing turbo *S15 early: (99.01->00.10) *S15 late: (00.10 -> End of production for NZ, Jap S15s, and all AU S15s) *s/s: Substituted number (don't know whether it means just a part no change or it means a similar part that can be used to replace the original part) So in summary, after some relaible source from Jap + confirmed by two local nissan dealer, what we found so far : 1.The turbo of the Jap/NZ (and all AU) is changed to the AU/NZ S14 (non BB?) one from 10/2000. And according to Newmarket Nissan, it won't affect the performance of the car as a different boost and ECU mapping is used. 2. The early automatic S15 got the same turbo and injectors as the Jap S14. 3.The AU S15 is the same as the late Jap/NZ S15 engine wise. ............................................. 1) I believe T28 Ball Bearing Turbo IS NOT GT2510 because the difference between GT25 series/family and T28 are as follows: - Turbine 54mm GT25, 0.64mm A/R and 47mm outlet (T28 = 53mm T25, 0.64mm A/R and 42mm outlet) - Compressor 76mm T04S, 0.7 A/R and 53mm inlet (T28 = 60mm T3, 0.60mm A/R and 46.5mm inlet) 2) The OEM T28 Turbo of ALL Silvias SR20DETs are from the TB28 series/family. 3) The specific OEM turbo related to SR20DETs (T28 BB) = Garrett TB2808 (OEM No. 14411-91F00 / CHRA No. 446179-####) 4) The specific OEM model related to SR20DETs (T28 non-BB) = Garrett TB2809 (OEM No. 14411-75F00 / CHRA No. 466543-####) = Garrett TB2815 (OEM No. 14411-82F01 / CHRA No. 431876-####) 5) Lastly all Series of the TB28## are NOT BB except the TB2808 (OEM No. 14411-91F00 / CHRA No. 466179-####) 6) All Silvia's OEM does not have the TB2808 turbo except the late model S14 and early model S15 regardless of JDM/AU/NZ 7) Lastly with regards to whether JDM/NZ S15 early: 14411-69F00 AT having a BB or non-BB... I am not sure here. However simply check the CHRA No, if it is 466179-####, it is a BB, any other numbers then it is not. ..............................................

Nicely's right, the myth concerning the "ceramic" turbine on the S15 BB turbo is utter bollox. The only Nissan turbo that had ceramic turbine blades (to my knowledge, anyway) was fitted to certain models in the Skyline range.
I've got a genuine S15 Jap/NZ early type, part number 14411-91F00, on my S14a. It runs 1.2 barg to the redline day in day out and peaks at 1.35 barg. Hasn't shattered yet Not the most powerful upgrade for the money perhaps but it spools well and made 323 bhp and 308 ft/lbs (fly) on the dyno so not too bad. |

Being an early S15, mines a BB. Spools REALLY well.

I think the myth came from the blades having a coating on them which some people presumed to be ceramic, and the "recieved information" bug did it's worst from there. I'm told by a reliable source that the s15 turbo is the same part number as the GT28R
