    S15 Consult Plug Location

Nearly pulled my hair out a couple of weekends back trying to find the Consult plug in the S15. Had the trim off round the footwell fusebox (where it is on the S14) looking for it. Gave up as it was boiling and I was starting to cook.

Decided to spend a bit more time looking at the weekend. Got into the 'back-break' postion in the footwell to start looking behind the dash. Looked up and thought 'what the feck's that clip?' Pulled it and lo and behold...

    Another annoying S14/a niggle fixed.

That'll be next to the bonnet lever then!

What does this plug do? Call me a dumbass, but I have never come accross this bit before...(although I have wondered what it was).

Consult is Nissan's overpriced tool for doing diagnosis and problem solving. It's a connection to the ECU to get readings from various sensors. It can also be used to run diagnostic tests and reset ECU error codes. Non Nissan cars (and some later Nissans) use the more industry standard ODB II connector that allows you to connect to a range of aftermarket diagnostic computers.

There are aftermarket monitors you can attach to the consult plug that allow you to monitor what's going on in the ECU. I had a Techtom MDM100 on my 300ZX which I had monitoring various settings including Lamda sensor etc.. A better version is now available that works on Palm and you can see it here http://www.300degree.com/electronics/nprobe/ Again this tool is only for monitoring.

If you want more troubleshooting and on board diagnostic capabletity there is an aftermarket tool originally developed for the 300ZX called Conzult (it is also pricey at about 260 quid). It allows you to do the same as Consult and more besides. A version called Conzult SX works for 200sx series of cars.

info on what it does is here

    http://300zx-twinturbo.com/conzult/

    hope that sheds some light.

Alternatively, you could read the extremely long SXOC thread here.

John Bennett made a load of these. He MAY do another batch if he gets the numbers. I still have about 13 Consult plugs left.

At £10, the Datascan software is probably the best diag software I've seen. You also get free updates and backup.

If Johns fed up with making the interfaces, PLMS do them and sell the excellent datascan software: www.plmsdevelopments.com

My interface is wired up and sits in the glove compartment along with the Emanage and cable, ready to be hooked up to a laptop.

    Missing socket ?

OK guys - looked for this socket where Nicely's photo indicated. I just have a square hole with nothing attached or lurking up behind the lower dash (that I can see lying on my back that is).
Could this item be located elswhere on my car (Model year 2000, Spec R in standard form as far as I know).
What does the socket look like (if that's not a stupid question !!)

More than likely, its lurking behind the dash somewhere. It'll be on the end of a loose cable with a plug which this will attach to:

    missing plug ?

Thanks for that. I'll have another look over the weekend, but I'm pretty sure there's nothing resembling that hiding up there !

Is your car 100% certainly a S15, not something with a S15 panel conversion or something?

They're pretty uniform AFAIK, try routing around the fuse box in the drivers footwell, see if it's there
