Photo How To : Change S14 rear brake Pads

Please be aware that this is NOT the Nissan suggested way of doing the rear brakes.

    You will need

Socket set with 17mm socket, 14mm Socket, and extension bars.
    21mm Socket or Wheel Jack
    Brake Piston winding tool
    WD40
    Jack and Axle Stand(s)

Firstly jack the car and secure with an axle stand, if needed use a brick on the front wheel to stop the car rolling.
    Remove the rear Wheel.
    Release the handbrake.

A 17mm socket, is used to remove the caliper.

Then pull it off the disk, old disks with a slight ridge may make this harder, just use some brute force.

Undo one of the 14mm bolts on the caliper, swing it open.

Remove the other 14mm bolt and you should be left with this.

Dont worry if this happens, just stick it back on.

Take your WD40 and spay where the pistone meets the rubber, otherwise when we try and wind the piston back in it will bind on the rubber and make it even more of a b1tch than it already is.

Remove the cap from the brake fluid bottle in the engine bay.

Now wind with the tool availale for about £10-£15 from many places, or improvise.

You need to wind it back in until its almost flsh with the caliper, maybe 4mm out whatever the rubber squashes too. It is VERY IUMPORTANT that it finished with one of the notches perfectly down, as you will see in the next steps.

Then reassemble the new pads in the bit you removed.

Get back to the swing position

Rotate back into place, now you will see if the nipple on the pads aligns with the piston, if not - adjust.

Now its in you will see if theres enough gap for getting the disk in, if not wind the piston back more and try again.

Now finish the job by putting it all back together.

Wheel back on and to the other side. If youve taken under 20 mins your lucky, over an hour and your unlucky (per side).

    Hope this was useful.

and note that there are some pads out there, that will fit, but have two 'pips' located exactly where the outside legs of the caliper need to be. If you find you have these pads, the pips will need to be filed off.

They look very simular to the s12 ones.
Can you not just swing it down instead of taking it all off and do it like that,or is that what you mean by the not nissan way.

Yes you can just swing it down, but if you take it off I find the winding back of the piston easier.
Nissan dont suggest taking it apart, but putting the pads in while its all together, possible, but stupidly more difficult.

Cheers Papa had PM'd mark to ask for that too.

Great "how-to" SM and very timely I've only swung the caliper down before now but will try the full-removal method this time.

Are the discs easy to remove/replace whilst doing this job?

Yep, mine fall off once the caliper is off anyway.
If the dont just screw a M8 (?) bolt into the supplied hole which lifts it off the hub.

    Nice write up.

I tend to rebolt the piston to the car as you can get more leverage on it

And an angle grinder spanner is exactly the right tool for gettin onto the piston

Very nice thanks for that as ive have my rear brakes to do.

One question - once you have taken the caliper off, do the disks just slide off as per the front disks i.e held on by the wheel?

    just got back from halfords.

the caliper rewind tool will be in on tuesday.

but the car is booked for retest on monday, as i am away from tuesday morning onwards.

what are the 7 and 8 mm hex brake rewind tools? they had them for bimmers, fords and stuff. only 4 quid. take it that's something different?

local motorshop can sell me some neons, but hadn't heard of the rewind tool

so it will go fo rthe retest with the pads in the boot
