HOW TO: Fit an Oil Cooler

This photo-how-2 is for Brens S14 oil cooler kit, and everything you need is in it. But is applicable to other oil coolers with slight modification.

    You will need.

    Parts

    1 * Oil Cooler
1 * Oil Cooler Sandwich plate (gauge take-off, thermostatic or plain)
1 * Bag of nuts and bolts
    3 * Metal brackets.
2 * Pre-Sized Braided Steel Hoses (Rubber tubing & connectors if mounting in alternative position)
(Top Tip, if using the rubber tubing, heat it with a hair drier to get the connector fully on).

    Tools

    14mm socket.
    10mm socket.
    8mm Socket.
    Hacksaw (for brackets).
    PTFE tape.
    Oil.
    Large Adjustable Spanner.
    Vice with wood plates (optional).
    Oil Filter remover.
    Small screwdriver
    Medium X-head screwdriver.
Try to do at the same time as an oil change.

Firstly remove the plastic undertray, you will need a 10mm socket and a small screwdriver for the single push-fit locating pin.
Then drain the oil if you are doing an oil change also, if not just remove the filter, but make sure you have a oil drip tray as some will spill.

    Next remove the sidelight
Single X head screw then pop it out of the ball-fixing.

    Then the center grill
1/4 turn with a screwdriver and the 4 bolts will unclip
Remove the clips now and replace in the grill, to refit have the clips in the grill before attaching to the car.

    Then Remove Drivers side headllight
    4 * 10mm bolts

Remove the battery connector, your working near the starter motor with metal hoses.

Now you are ready to get the cooler ready for fitting.
Make all the bends in the brackets, and chop the brackets down as required.
Dont attach the left hand bracket to anything once it is "made"
Attatch the left hand brackets to the cooler, but not to the car.

The shiny stuff around my oil cooler is tin foil, as really the cooler is only needed on the track, and this helps keep the oil from being too cold on the road. Just watch your oil temps and decide if you need/want to do the same. Vez's car ran at 80oC with no lagging on the cooler, mine was 75oC while cruising.

    Locate the 3 fixing points.

    1) Top let, the bracket needs to be bent 90o, to for an L shape to use the 14mm bolt that is here.

    http://www.suicidesquad.co.uk/sm/sxo...oler/fix1a.JPG

    2) Top right, the bracket will bolt to the bonnet catch support here (from the back, pre-threaded)
The bracket will need to be bent 90o then either bent back on itself (as in pic) or shortend using the hacksaw.

    3) Bottom right, a pre-threaded hole just to the right of the bottom of the bonnet catch support. Another 90o bend, and remove the excess.

    PIPE ROUTING

Connect the braided hoses to the sandwich plate, use PTFE tape.
Then tighten with a finger-tight. just enough to stop the hose twisting.
Pay attention to the orientation of the braided pipes, you need to align the ends with the cooler.
Drop the pipes down under the car past the starter motor, get a friend to lie below (or pass from above) to guide them nicely.
Roughly fix the sandwich plate in place.

and up in front of the radiator, in the bumper.

This is where you now need to check the connectors are at the right angles for attaching to the cooler.

Make a not of the twisting needed, and pull out the sandwich plate and hoses.

Tighten the braided hoses to the sandwich plate after any twists are needed, at this point it may be advisable to hold the sandwich plate in the vice with wood protectors (and rubber seal removed).

Replace sandwich plate and connect to the car, re-route the hoses.
Double check the connectors are at the correct angles.
Sandwich plate srcew should be just finger tight, with just a 27(??)mm socket to help you grip it.

Tighten the sandwich plate screw 3/4 of a turn further with a bar/rachet.

Fit the longest hose to the cooler (while loosley in the bumper), use PTFE tape and your big adjustable.

Slide the cooler, with its lefdt hand brackets attached into place. Use the 2 bolts to secure it to the car.

Fit the left side bracket you have ready, secure.

Before connecting the final hose, fill the Cooler with oil.

Connect the final hose with some more PTFE tape.

Replace the oil filter (new one usually)
    Fill with oil.

Remove the fuel pump fuse, 3rd one down, left hand side, in drivers footwell.

Crank the motor for 30secs, or until oil pressure gauge shows pressure, if fitted.

    Refit the fuel pump fuse.

    Start the car.

    Check for leaks.

It looks promising mate but its a little unclear where you are looking at the car on some of the pics... is it possible to back out a little to see where you are?

I have the camera on the floor .. just pointing up, IU would have to get it onto a proper ramp for that. With the pics, when your doing it, it will be obvious I hope .. its a natural line for the pipes to take.

    EDIT
There are bigger (but not zoomed out) pic links under the small pics hosted with the post. Hosted them here and they will always be available even after 12 months, bigger pics may vanish next yyear or something.

The thermostatic sandwich plate goes where the oil filter goes, then the oil filter goes on next, and hence the oil cooler plate is "sandwiched"
I also have a gauge take-off sandwich plate, so mine must be a farmhouse doorstep sandwich

My oil pressure & temp senders are on the second of the 2 sandwich plates .. if its the gauge thermostat you meant.

Me and the old man fitted mine today using the same kit. There are a couple of things we did differently. We didn't take the undertray off, we managed to route all the pipes through from above, going around the alternator was a bit of fiddle but we got there in the end.

I may be asking some oil related questions unless my search turns up anthing

    Did you use my Guide?
Was it clear enough once you started installing it?
Did you take an extra photo's I could add into my guide?

Ish, we used it as a rough guide. TBH I doubt you could get better pictures of the bits that are hard - around the alternator etc.
