    Home network help please.....

    Hello networking gurus

I am trying to get my Win2K and XP machines at home to share files (XP machine is gonna be my backup and picture machine).

I cannot ping from the 2k to XP, but the other way works. Both machines can surf the web no probs.

Last night I gave them both ip addresses and plugged them back to back with a Cat 5 crossover cable and tuned zone alarm off on the Win2K machine (not installed on the other) and I still can't ping from the Win2k to XP.

    Help!!

What addresses and masks did you give them?

    10.1.15.1 255.0.0.0
    10.1.15.2 255.0.0.0

Not sure if those masks are right.

They normally run on DHCP using the IP's that the wireless router thingy gives them which is in the 1.1.1.100 range.

In both cases I can only ping in one direction. I am wondering if the Win2K machine is getting stopped by the Norton virus scanner I have running??!?!

Anti Virus shouldn't stop it, do you have a firewall enabled, either Norton or XP's?

I was running Zone Alarm, but turned it off when I put the Xover cable in.

Check the network properties on the XP machine, the Microsoft firewall might be turned on.

Well spotted Andy, it was the XP firewall running, switched it off and it all burst into life.

    Nice one

    Cheers
