    Auto box swap

Does anyone know if you can turn an auto s14 into a manual? and if so what do you have to swap? What i can work out is pedal box, manual gearbox, manual flywheel/clutch, possibly ecu, anyone got any ideas? any help is greatly appreciated its a 1997 model 14a touring, cheers

Here's a rough guide to whats needed and how to do it

Theres one area to cut in the bulkhead, if you pull the carpet back in the area where the clutch pedal would go you will see the inner bulkhead has holes fr the pedal/master cylinder, you just need to cut the outer bulkhead to match, cost wise I got most of the parts from intapart for £375 which gave me everything except the clutch, flywheel and bolts and spigot bush ( I did buy a new slave cylinder but one came with the gearbox ) Clutch kit was £320 for an AP paddle but depending on what power you are running you could go for a cheaper organic clutch, flywheel was £30 from Steve Carter, bolts and spigot bush were about £30 new. Labour costs will depend on who does the work for you, but allow for 2-3 days work if you are not doing ot yourself

Here's a list of part's I used to do the conversion

    Gearbox
    Gearbox crossmember
    M/T flywheel
Flywheel bolts ( bolts are longer for M/T )
    Spigot bush
    M/T propshaft
    Clutch pedal
Brake pedal from a manual car ( or cut down auto brake pedal )
    Cutch Plate
    Clutch cover
Clutch release bearing ( buy a clutch kit and you get plate, cover and bearing together)
    Clutch bolts
Gear Lever ( I changed to a short shifter )
    Clutch Master cylinder
    Clutch Slave cylinder
    All hydraulic lines
    shift boot and plate
console interior trim and gear knob
    gearbox oil and clutch fluid

with regards to the ECU, I am currently running with the auto one with no problems, but the manual one does use a slightly different map ( I'm also using the HKS Fcon pro V piggy back ECU so can remap to suit)

The only other part I am going to change is the diff as the auto diff has slightly lower ratio's than the manual, again this is not a nessicity but I find the lower gears just a bit short

A lot of the parts I sourced second hand from Intapart

    London Road, Daventry, Northants
    Tel +44 (0)1327 310511, Fax +44 (0)1327 310000
    email info@intapart.co.uk

Who did me a good deal on most of what I needed, and also got some parts from the board ( cheers Steve )

AP paddle clutch and B&M short shifter I got from Bren

New bolts and spigot bush I got from Auto Jap Spares on 02476474848

I would advise you to buy new flywheel bolts, clutch bolts, release bearing and clutch. Its also worth considering how far you are going to take the car tuning wise as this would be a good time to put in a lightened flywheel and uprated clutch.

The work itself was carried out by TDi in Barking Essex using the research I had done, work took approx 40 hours, but now we know how to do it, TDi reckon they could do the next one in 2-3 days

The job itself is resonably straight forward.

The inner bulkhead has the cut outs already in it for the master cylinder, you need to drill the outer bulkhead to match, if you pull the carpet back to the left of where the steering column goes through the bulkhead you will see what I mean

Once this is cut out and the auto trans controller removed, the rest is pretty much a straight forward bolt off bolt on job

    1. Drain auto transmission fluid from the gearbox, remove cooling lines and unplug all wiring and sensor's

    2. Remove propshaft

    3. Remove exhaust front pipe and bracket

    4. Support the back of the gearbox and then remove the crossmember, shifter linkage and interior trim

    5. Remove starter motor

    6. Remove transmission

    7. Remove flywheel

    8. Remove auto trans adaptor from crank ( this was one of the time consuming parts, in the end we drilled and tapped it and used a slide hammer, although others have packed the hole in the adaptor with grease then used a rod that just fits in the hole and drive the rod in to get the adaptor out using the hydraulic effect

    9. Install spigot bush into the crank

    10. Install the M/T flywheel

    11.Install clutch assembly

    12. Install clutch master cylinder, brake pedal and clutch pedal

    13. Install all hydraulic lines

    14. Install Manual gearbox and refit starter motor and front pipe

    15. Fit gear lever

    16. Fit propshaft

    17. Connect speed sensor, reverse light switch, and neutral position sensor ( some cutting and splicing of the wiring is needed for the reverse lights and neutral position censor. you will also need to bypass the starter inhibitor switch

    18. Bleed hydraulic lines.

    19. Start car and test

This is just a basic guide to give you some idea of what is required to do the conversion.

I used a guide I found here as a basis, its for the U.S 240SX, but most of it is relevant to the 200sx

    http://www.240sx.org/links/installs/s14_5speed_swap.htm

We dont have the M/T mounting plate and the sensors we use are different as is the wiring for the reverse lights, but it's pretty much the same.

    Wiring - speed & reverse

I am bit conufused on the wiring. Does anyone have a colourcoded wiring diagram? The whole auto is deleted form the manual, and I would like to have a go without trial and error.

    Thanx

if you look for a thread by me in the apt section ,it has links to threads that listed the details of the wiring, i had mine convert to s15 6 speed by apt a few years ago.

I don't know if APT would do a tranny swap. Especially in 2-3 days.

Has anyone declared to the DVLA they have converted the car to manual? does it require the car to be inspected at a test centre or is it just a case of filling out a form?

Sorted, Appointment made! Gary also said I didn't need a manual ECU??? Wouldn't leaving the auto ECU throw on a check engine light?

I just wrote to the DVLA stating that I had changed to manual and asked then to amend the V5 which I enclosed

No, ive still got my auto ECU and my car is running fine. The autobox has its own ecu where the clutch pedal goes so the main ECU doesnt control any aspect of the gear control.

    Good news!

Cookie, I may be interested in that ECU!

Also, will the s13 manual pedal setup work for the s14??
