Rx8s are not unreliable ... the engines have so few parts there is nothing to go wrong. The down side is they don't start when they suffer from low compression, unlike a piston that just looses more and more power as it drops.

Rx8's only go wrong once, and it costs £2500 for a rebuild that if you service it properly will last 80k

Compare that to replacing diesel parts and dual mass flywheels and it's comparatively cheap.

The only downsides of the rotary imo is the lack of torque means the car is only fast when wound up, forget being a twat at the lights. It drinks fuel like a 500bhp car with none of the power and it eats cats like nothing else half the fuel you put in comes out the exhaust

I love rotaries, but I'll happily admit that they aren't the toughest things in the world. There are plenty of things that go wrong with the Renesis installation on the 8 - gnition system is pretty much a service item, Oil injectors supply insufficient lubrication, and the often random seal longevity being just a few. If returning is kept on top of then they are OK, but an extended oil interval or a missed ignition issue can shorten the life very quickly.
The oil consumption isn't as bad as people say, but they still require way more looking after than your average internal combustion engine, which most people just aren't used to. If they'd had the same amount of development as conventional ICEs I've no doubt they'd be a lot better, but they haven't, and that ship has now sailed.
They make fantastic race car/toy car engines, especially when turbocharged, but for a 'normal' car? Nah, you're alright thanks.

No it isnt. No-one says its a bad car, just that it would be better with another 100hp, thats not missing the point anymore than me saying another 50hp in my MR2 would make it twice as much fun.

Toyota and Subaru missed a massive selling opportunity with the GT86/BRZ. Yes do the boggo 190 one but there must have been massive scope for a tuned 'WRX/TRD' version with 240-300bhp surely?????

As for RX8s they annoyed the shit out of me everytime i have driven one, great car to drive except that POS under the bonnet that does fook all until the rev counter is pointing to the 7 I am used to torque so I hate buzzy engines you are constantly having to change down 2 gears if you want to overtake or slow down by 10mph. Rotories should be in motorbikes

BRZ STI is not 1000 years away by the looks of it. Will prop up the GT86/BRZ nicely, although will struggle to make volume given the agreement that Toyota and Subaru seem to have.

    They were

Norton used to race their "F1" which was a rotary lump. Mind you, Norton also promptly went bust

Nothing at all to do with a brake lockup

Mazda's new sports car is to be announced at 11:45 this evening. I'm quietly optimistic for something interesting and not overly expensive. A 370Z competitor with ~325hp and priced similarly would be lovely!

but it's pretty much certain to be a Rotary.

They need to get the price right though, because in the £30K category you can now get the Focus or Civic with over 300 ponies and those things go like the bloody clappers.

You do still have to look at the thing though, so all hope isn't lost, if they make it nop gopping like the new CTR then they'll be one step ahead at least.

It just seems like hot hatches have taken a leap forward, and you'll need something more than just a shiny dick on wheels to sell a sports car in real numbers.
