    200sx s13 Noise from Rear

    Hi,

New to this forum but thought you might be able to help me out!
    I've just brought a 1990 200sx s13 and love it!

The only thing wrong with it at the moment is that when ever I go over 80mph or hold out the revs I get a horrific noise coming from the back of the car.
It sounds like something is grinding but doesn't happen when I press the clutch in.

Any ideas before I take it to a garage?

    Cheers
    Jack

I want to say, noisy bearing but to me you should be hearing that at every speed not just at 80+mph, as you said the rear maybe it could be something to do with your diff/prop, and the pressure eases when you disengage the drive.
Is it always from the rear or at speeds of 80+
Also what's the noise like? Humming? Knocking?

Its quite hard to explain. Ill try and get a video of it.

Its always at the rear and is almost like a extreme vibration but like I said sounds like something is grinding. The only thing I can think of is that it is the prop/diff.

It has got a welded diff but I don't think that is causing the issue. I'll take it to a garage tonight and see if they can pinpoint anything.

    Thanks

My advice at this point is the area you want them to look at would be prop/diff.

Maybe change the gearbox and diff fluid! Maybe swap out your diff for a non welded one, check the propshaft carrier for play and also your prop may have been but back on wrong, most props are balanced.

Finally i don't know what affect if any but maybe you have an abs prop with non abs diff or vice versa.

You got a track local to you?

The first suspect in any problem is the bit that has been messed with or messed with last.
    Who welded the diff?
Did they swap the pumpkin with ring gear? Ring gear and pinion are a set and should never be mixed.

I feel as stupid as I sound but I had good look under the car and saw that one if the exhaust mounts looked like it was rubbing against the car. Tapped it all up and tested it. Solved the issue... thanks for the replies guys. And I'm quite happy that it's not going to cost me anything to fix...
