XJS v12 how does it make you feel?

My buddie keeps on going on about picking up a late 80s XJS V12 because he reckons they are excellent value. I ve been looking now as well and I think I have to agree, however, I really know nothing about them. Anyone here with experience owning/driving one or just generally have an opinion on them?

My friend had one on Nitrous, ran well but I think it rusted away in the end.

As above - but whenever I think V12 XJ all I can see in my mind is:

    And then want overcomes reason

Nice to look at in a museum and admire the shape of them as imo not an unattractive car styling wise
,but that's it for me,as a daily the running costs on tax, fuel alone will cripple most of us quickly
and as a weekend car its not really my cup of tea at all,
the electrical faults makes them too unreliable to go cruising across europe,
and too big and heavy a car to throw it about through the twisties in standard form
there is a reason they appear cheap and most of the above is why
it could turn into a moneypit very fast and little chance of getting it back, unlkess it was crazy cheap (or free?) to start with
(I know jonny will defend them as he likes a Jaaaaaag ) but his is loads newer and more refined luxobarge stylee

Sounds lovely, but looked so softly sprung and lacked damping, hats off for his driving skills controlling it
the car looked proper on the limit

kxruss's post made me laugh ,and 10 mpg that's very good or was it a 4.2 the economy engine compared to the slurp'o'matic v12

There's a guy in our village who must be mid 70's with a bright red V12 convertible. He always drives it with the roof down and a massive cheery grin - so I'd say that it makes you feel young and happy

Although I suspect he may be minted, so I guess that has a bearing on it. I'm not sure he'd have such a grin if he wasn't. Either that or the grin is one grim determination.

I'd love one but the reputation for wallet rape has me taking a wide berth.

My one was the 4.2 straight six. I would have another one because they look so smart inside and out especially when lowerd, its just a shame everything else is shite. I have never before or since had a car that made me feel sea sick when pressing on.

I love them but could never own one

How about an early XK8, they are getting cheap but probably wont be much softer on the wallet as its basically the same car

Pretty much this all over, XJS ownership just sounds like setting fire to your wallet once a week, an XK8 (or XKR) are massive bargains atm and are going to be slightly more reliable

This was my exact argument with my mate, sure the XJS does look better but I feel the xk8 would probably handle better and be cheaper to pick up and run (probably)
He dismissed me. However, he has lots of cash. I do not.
