I am on top of the world right now because......................

Although it has low compression, it's one healthy engine

And this is how far I've got today.

Wanted to get further than this but I was unable to remove the other cam cover as one of the bolts doesn't want to come off just yet. Hopefully I'll remember to bring more tools home tomorrow. Also one of the turbo bolts is also putting up a fight. Might end up taking off the exhaust manifold with the turbo still attached.

Hopefully I'll get more stripping down done on Sunday.

The cam cover shot is before I've cleaned it, literally just pulled it off. Still not cleaned it yet actually. Cleaning can start when I've fully stripped it.

Managed to get the turbo off yesterday by removing the manifold and clamping it in a vice. Today I managed to get the stubborn screw out the cam cover. Did this by hack sawing a line through the middle so I could get a decent flat screw driver on it.

Removed the cam cover, another minter.

    Pic of the bad camshaft.

The head is good inside, no carbon deposits.

Put the lifters in a tub.

No prizes for guessing the tub lol. Took head off.

And what I am left with. Will clean up the head tomorrow and send it off to have my new valves and seals fitted.

Wow those camcovers are damn clean! Seeing your engine like this takes me back to when i did mine, you are doing an excellent job and fair play for detailing it all here.

Keep the updates coming i am now subscribed!

Never thought I'd see a cleaner cam cover than mine

I can't believe the exhaust cam went. I must have been a mistake during the cam belt change or something to bugger up the splines. Must have mistaken ambition for ability

I think I have a spare cam cover bolt. Is it a long one or a short one ?

I'll try to dig it out and stick it in the post if I can find it.

    Anything else you need ?

When I realized the cam spline had mushed I thought someone must have fitted a different head. But after removing the cam covers it's obviously the original head as it has only done 26K miles with a service almost every year. I think the same as you, either messed up when doing the belt, don't know how as both the locator dowels are still in it. Or I'm thinking perhaps someone thought there was a problem with the CAS so changed it for a worse one which they didn't know was worse.

I'm alright for a cam cover bolt as I'll just nick one off the daily
Thanks for the offer though. The only thing I'm after (I know it's a long shot) is the exhaust downpipe heat shield thingy. I've got a new downpipe and it didn't come with one.

I have some of the heat shields from the mani/turbo/downpipe. Have you got a picture ?

No picture as it has/had a big SS exhaust on it. There is supposed to be a heat shield that goes around the downpipe. There is a bracket about half way down my downpipe which it bolts to. IIRC there might be a clamp at the top and bottom. I imagine its approx 2 feet long or something lol

I just looked in the manual and I see its a 2-piece monster.

I don't have that shield, sorry.

It's odd though. I don't remember there being one like that on my exhaust when I took it off but it was over 10 years ago.

It's OK if I cant get one I'll wrap it. The annoying thing is when I bought the car the previous owner gave me the standard exhaust which did have the shield on it but I got made redundant and had nowhere to put it and the camshaft died so everything happened all at once. In the end I gave it to a scrap yard

    I'm a bit stupid.
