    steering problems

i went drifting yesterday and kept hearing a knocking noise on full lock found that the wheels are hitting the chassis rail lip.

the mods that have been done are

    adjustable tension rods
    dw rack spacers
lowered on apexi springs with kyb shocks (not sure on mm lowered)
cut away lock stops on the control arms.

when i started hearing it i had 9 j wheels with 225 45 17 tyres fitted which have the offset of 30. so fitted 5 mm spacers which didnt make any difference, then tried standard wheels on and it done the same and at 1 point the wheels jammed on full lock which i did have when i 1st fitted the rack spacers without doing the tracking, but the tracking was done properly in a garage. when the car is stopped and i turn full lock both ways the wheels are not touching and has quite alot of clearance from the chassis.

along with this problem the steering is quite heavy, which is manageable so any help would be much appreciated

Got any movement that you shouldn't have anywhere on the front suspension?

I have similar ish mods but with cut and welded hubs. Afterwards mine was hitting on that lip. ... The lip isn't there any more...

And, when you say you have had the tracking done... Have you had the caster set up? ... That could be your heavy steering?

Get a club hammer and fold the lip up flat. The steering locking solid on full lock is because you have removed the lock stops causing the steering to go over centre. Put some stops back on the control arms to prevent this.

Did you just guess the length of the tension rods? If they are too short and youve pulled the control arms forwards too much that will increase castor and steering weight. 7 degs is about right for drifty/all round purposes without the steering getting too heavy.

in a way yes, i measured the length of standard rods and done the adjustable rods to the same length with the plan of getting them checked/adjusted correct at a garage.
i dont think the garage had the equipment to check the caster thats probably why he said that it looks fine, but at the time i didnt have time to take to somewhere that would have the equipment, being that i live in a smallish town there isnt anywhere local that specialise in suspension set up. the nearest is around 30miles away, which isnt to bad but being i work weekdays and some saturdays getting to there isnt possible. i did expect a local garage would be able to sort it out.

i took the car out for a drive yesterday and found when i add some boost the car is pulling to the right.
