    Rust question

I recently found my drivers side carpet to be soaked so did a bit of digging to find out why!

I found this in the footwell and wondered if this is the cause? Now the question is how can i go about repairing it as i'd prefer to cut it out and do it properly.
It is right above the fuel line!

Can i unclip the fuel lines to get them far enough away to cut it out?

(The hole to the left wasn't a hole till i poked it)

The bit to the right is the chassis leg does that much water get in there and how?

Why has it only gone there?

That looks like someone has hit it with an axe !

I'll try to have a better look at it when I get home on a PC but on a hpone, that looks more like accident damage than salt corrosion.

Get some better pictures up, hard to tell really.

on the fuel lines, yea if you upclip them and then tie the lines up out of the way.
Helps to have someone watch where you work to make sure the lines are always free from danger.

Obviously you have two sheets joining near there, but we cut out the rust and simply put new plates in properly, fairly straightforward tbh

I've got a chassis that has rust all round the winner wing to bulkhead joint.

I think it's down to spilt brake fluid.

Zornyman i cant find the part in your thread!

Is there that much moisture in the chassis leg for it to rot through? And why only there?

Oh was sure I had pics up? Can get some of the repaired areas on Tuesday when I'm up.my unit. But it runs in line with the chassis leg and obviously the joint is a problem that causes rot, as all the oem seam sealer is porous so let's all the joins rot.

Yours doesn't appear to join where the panels meet though, so I would say either the underside there has been damaged allowing it to rot from underneath, or there's more rust under the Underseal and some more digging is required.

If your carpets damp I highly recommend removing it for a few days to air everything out and making sure the interior is 100% dry as that's what caused most of the rot on my inner sills.

Yea it's about 3" above the join! I 3m schutz'd the underneath last year and there were no signs of rust but obviously i couldn't see 100% above where the fuel lines are. It seems to of started from the chassis leg and spread across as i poked that hole through when chipping the sound deadening off.

Yea good shout i was contemplating taking the carpet out so definitely will now!

How much of a pita is it to remove the carpet?

    Take front seats out.
    Remove rear seat squab.
    Remove centre console trim.
    Then the lower console.
Remove the radio so you can get to cut the bit in front of support brackets.
    Remove the sill trim.
    Undo seat belt lower anchors.
    Remove both kick panels.
Remove clutch foot rest and accelerator stop.
Prise out the 3 push clips on the rear edge of the carpet.

Nice red damp proof underlay is evident.

Most of my inner sills had disappeared due to a damp carpet. Took me and a mate many Many hours to repair so make sure it's 100% dry, I'd also suggest get s couple of those salt pot things to dehumidify the car.
