    First run issues.

***UPDATE*** Turns out it was an oil over fill. I have now drained the excess oil, any ideas how long it would take to burn the excess off? *****

    Hey guys, I recently purchased a 1994 S13 with a CA18DET.

Car is on 80k and service history up until 70k odd.

The car has not been used for 3 years, and started perfectly with no issues.

I done an oil and filter change today using 10w40 and it has lots of smoke when starts to warm up. The fuel is really low and the chap before me mentioned there was a bottle of cat converter cleaner added to fuel. Maybe as the fuel has run so low its burning lots of the cleaner?

I'm thinking maybe turbo? or could it be something more sinister? Idles with no knocks or bangs and starts first time every time. Appears compression is good but will definitely get it checked.

    Would appreciate any help.

    Thanks in advance.

In the sun I'd definitely stick with white smoke

To be honest I've no experience of Cat cleaner. Search one way valve trick on here, it may help.

I'll give that a search! The smoke doesn't really smell like oil to be honest.

Get a one way valve from a scrap car almost all cars have one on the brake booster pipework!
Then put the valve in the breather going from exh camcover to intake pipe (elephants trunk) put it so the camcover can vent out through it but not draw air in.

if car still smokes chances are its not the turbo.

why was cat cleaner put in there? If its a prefacelift model it shouldnt have a cat

I've added about £25 worth of Vpower fuel as I’m not sure how old the fuel was in the tank (especially if it had cat cleaner in)

Several sources are pointing to oil seals on the turbo, so I will try the OWV trick.

Alternatively I shall buy a T28 with supporting mods as a replacement.

I have just read on one of the stickies:

'Old s13 engine you will be better using a thicker oil, so oils like Mobil 1 motorsport 15W50 or castrol RS 10W60 may be better, allthough a lot more expensive. If your engine's newly rebuilt, can probably use a thinner oil (5/5)'

Should I try using a thicker oil?

Id never put 60 grade in mine find and fix the problem rather than mask it or you'll end up with more probs.

The owv trick can be used to show that the turbo is your problem and altho people have run the owv for ages it should only really be used as a stop gap till you can afford a new turbo and if needs be supporting mods.

id check and clean your breather system aswell personally

I have just pulled the breather pipes off and there is a large build up of oil grime but no blocks, there was also water / condensation dripping out of the T piece. Does this give any clues?

Is there any mayo on dipstick or oil filler cap?
I would clean the breathers out its not so much the camcover breathers but the inlet camcover to block breather which goes under the inlet plenum it has a metal pipe that has a 90degree bend in that is only roughly 12mm internal diameter that is the one that causes problems but it is a right fxxker to get at but it is possible with alot of swearing.

i would guess that that pipe would be blocked or at least restricted if your camcover breathers are gunked up!

With the engine running pull of the pcv breather and see if it is sucking air into the plenum.

I've been working on this car all evening, found out that there was an oil overfill from the oil change.

The eccess oil has been dropped and now filled to the correct level.

The car is still smoking! I took the car for a short trip around the block, and it was like a smoke screen! Will it take some time to burn the overfilled oil or would you revert back to oil seals on turbo?

Thanks for the help everyone - turns out it had just thrown oil into the exhaust and it needed burning off!
