S15 and S14a loom differences and engine swaps

The plan is to get a S15 imported, and move engine, box, coilovers, subframe, brakes etc basically all the mechanical bits over from my S14a.

However, what I don't understand is that if I get a type S which is a heck of a lot cheaper, is the loom different from the R and if so what do you need to do to get it to run with the S14a sr20det, and also the engine management is that the same? Can I swap the H-dev board and custom map over?

Obviously I'd have another custom map done just for safety.

Why not swap the looms over. You'd need to with a spec s anyway

Take it from me, if you are that set on a S15 save your money and buy a spec R

Hi Scottie, the conversion that was done on mine has the S14 lump, gearbox, ECU and loom - found out the electronic side is what it is while at H-Dev as the consult port hadn't been wired in. So for the H-Dev stuff you should be able to swap it straight over and replace the S15 ECU with yours.

Well i guess if you already have a complete car sat there its a good idea.
I bought everything separate. With all the people letting you down with parts, also not knowing you need something till youre already doing it.
Just makes the whole thing a real pain.

Biggest thing is you will end up with exactly the same car as a S14/a thats slightly more braced/ lighter. But just looks different

the only issue i have is with rust and a lot of it on a s14a shell, all mechanical parts spot on, so just want what i have now without rust

You'd need to keep on top of the rust on a S15 as well; mine's been in the country less than a year and already the rear arches are starting to rust. Admittedly I use mine as a daily but just be aware of it.

If you're using a S15 shell, Spec R has more bracing than a Spec S. Not sure if that would make a difference for your build.

It's true, S15's have exactly the same rust issues as S14's. in the same places! Its only because most S15's have been in the uk less time after 5years in the uk they will be just as rusty. Mine has been in the uk since 2007 and is suffering. Alot of others I've seen have rust on front struts etc.

With jap imports so much depends on where the car was used. Cars from up north in Japan are generally similar condition to uk cars.

If your doing a ground up rebuild, definitely invest in a spit or pay a company to dip the shell, etch primer it and then seal it. Its the only way to keep it safe long term!

I swapped all of my s14 stuff into a spec r. Only thing to remember is to swap the cam cover as the s15 coils won't fit the s14 cover.

If you get a spec r the parts you remove are worth a lot more. Engine, 6 speed box, diff
