    Annoying......

It's the vvt sprocket in the head that gets noisy. Doesn't influence that car though.

    ^^ This.

It's more a "that is VVT rattle" when driving off to people who think it's broke lol.

lol, i think its the spring inside the unit degrading over the years or the solenoid playing up causing a tapping/rattle like noise at idle/below 1200rpm roughly.
Can happen straight on start up briefly, or continuous, sometimes starts, goes away when it its warming then comes back like mine when its upto temp. Bloody annoying!!!

I refer the honourable gentleman to he SXOC search button in this case.

Many many threads on the subject.
    Common and annoying noise.
    Harmless.
Can be fixed for a few hundred pounds.
Fix may last for 10000 or 100000 miles , seemingly at random.

If it's a spring that's failing, can't the unit be dismantled and replaced with a stronger/better spring?

fix?! then how can i worry people properly when out in the car? my personal favourite is "i wonder how many times that bit in the engine will rattle before it falls off, dont worry though, we'll probably get there.....maybe.....do you have your phone?". etc etc

    aaaah. good times.
