Which Transmission oil to use ?

    Morning all,

Had my Transmission oil changed in Nov 2007 at 65k miles...
Am now at 126k miles, so am thinking its worth changing ?
I used Opie Oils website which said our cars (S14a) take 75w90 gearbox oil, is that right, or should i look for something else or a different number ?
    ta

Seems to make the SR boxes go notchy when cold, especially between 1st and 2nd.

    I can confirm this 100%

So much so I will be using Nissan stuff in a weeks time (when I also sort out the leaking seal between gearbox and prop).

I guess the stuff i linked too, which is 'Titan', made by Fuchs who do Silko could result in the same thing.... best i get a quote from Nissan (guess i need 4 or 5ltrs ?)

Gearbox is like 2.4-2.6litres, then rear diff is about 1.4litres (if you can get all of old stuff out).
So 4litres should be right, I got 4litres of the Silko and it was enough.

You need GL4 for the gearbox and GL5 for the diff. Do not put a GL5 oil in the gearbox.

Mark, can you put GL4 in the Diff?
As I have some Silkolene left over?

Yer that should be ok, the reason you cant put GL5 in a gearbox is it eats the brass syncros.

I thought 14s had a viscous diff so would need special non newtonian type fluid anyway?? I might be getting confused but i only know how a motorsport viscous diff works, maybe the term is different for road cars?

The viscous unit inside the diff is sealed non serviceable item that contains this non newtonian type fluid you talk about within it's own sealed body.

Therefore the diff oil that can be drained and refilled will only surround the viscous unit and lube everything else.

ps, Redline mtshite seems to act the same as Silkoline in our boxes.

SR box doesn't like ester based fully syntethic oils. My box seems to work best with Mobil GL4 mineral oil. The cheapest most basic gear oil there is...

Níssan oil costs over £100 here

Doesn't that fact that it is thick and notchy when cold mean it'll protect better when hot though?

You only need two tools in life - wd-40 and duct tape. If it doesn't move and should, use the wd-40. If it shouldn't move and does, use the duct tape.

And if you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem!
