    350z Rear Brembo conversion

    Hi Guys,

Just finished off putting the 350Z Brembo rears on my car and have looked at the disk in the calliper and it's not central.

Is this something to worry about ? the pads are in and it's all fine apart from the disk not being central in the calliper.

I have cheated a little as work had already been done to the calliper to make them fit.

The calliper bolt holes are in the wrong place so need to be welded up and ground flat, then new holes require drilling and to do the job right threaded inserts are installed.

The old setup was the 300ZX conversion so has the drum break assembly, remove the old disc and the dust shield requires cutting as you can see in the picture to enable the new disk to fit (you also have to trim the edges to allow the larger calliper to fit in the space.

Can't you just shim the calliper out?

    get a better picture......

I assume you mean central within the caliper? Get some better pics. If it is why cant you space the caliper? Got any pics of your welding?

I wish it was as simple as shimming the calliper as i would have done this already

It needs to moved inboard about 5/6mm ish to centralise it, so material needs to be removed from the mounting bracket or calliper.

Put a spacer under the rotor, between rotor and hub. Like a wheel spacer but skimmed down on external dia to fit inside the rotor

1-2mm maybe, 3mm iffy, 5-6mm? very much not OK to skim caliper mount.

What is the better option then, skim the Calliper OR skim the Hub ?

OR 1/2 of one and 1/2 of the other...

Is it possible to space the disk out?

If not I wouldn't take material off the calliper mount as it must take a lot of load. Then again so does the hub mount...

    Hmmm

    Thanks for that Lloydy.

They don't seem to have the issue as bad on that set-up only requiring a skim of 1.5mm to centralise the disk !

Mine is bolted to the same upright though and in the same way all be it i have not had to do anything to the hub as the calliper has been modified instead.

I have now cleaned up the calliper mounting faces and got it down from 7mm to 5mm to centralise the disk.

I may try a 5mm spacer behind the Disk and see if this is sufficient to resolve the problem.... BUT will that cause an issue with the handbrake ?

Could do as the rotor is used there will be a lip and shoes will only contact that and not the full surface. Would need a skim. Not a big issue if a few mm of shoe doesn't contact the drum.

You only need to move it far enough to get the pads in. Though it could result in the pad on the wide side not being very well supported by caliper frame when worn.

    How thick is the disc?
How wide is the disc slot in the caliper?
How wide is the pad aperture?
How thick are the pads and backing plates?

Right then, not going to space the disk out as this will cause issues with the location of the shoe on the correct part of the disk.

Best option is to take 2.5mm from the hub mount and 2.5mm from the calliper.

    Will get it done eventually....

Are those carpet tiles? What are they like if you get welding sparks on them?

This is the clean garage mate for assembly and light modification only, but mainly where the car is stored.

Fab work and major mods are done at the lockup
