    Minecraft (PC game)

Has anyone else tried this yet?

I've been aware of it's existence for a little while now due to various blogs and podcasts but have only just tried it myself.

It's rather hard to describe but is basically a sandbox world where you have to create everything yourself from raw materials lying around the place.

It looks like a 3D adventure from the early 90's but don't get hooked up on the graphics, it's bloody brilliant!

When you first start you won't have a clue what to do but go and search for a YouTube video called your first day tutorial (or something like that) which will help immensely.

    Enjoy!

I can't believe no-one else has tried this yet.

Ignore the graphics and go have a go, it's stupidly addictive

Looked absolutely rubbish. Its one of those games that sucks you in with the need to complete achievements and find new ways of doing things but ultimately leaves you feeling unfulfilled and hollow as though you have wasted a large proportion of time on nothing

    Like most games really

    Eh?

There aren't any achievements, it's a big sandbox. Think of it as Lego on steroids.

    Well, that's true but it's hardly a bank-breaker either

You can get a taste for free here: http://www.minecraft.net/play.jsp

I don't think you get the zombies / skeletons at night etc and you can't save but it gives you an idea.

    This is me.

I actually looked it up on Monday, I saw a screenshot and though - WTF? not bothered going any further.

Guess I'll have to give it a go?

You should definitely give it a go dude, watch the video that Dave posted earlier in the thread though, just so you know what to do - no tutorial so you'll be a bit lost otherwise.

Minecraft is an awesome way to waste time when you're bored. I have built a series of small forts connected by a system of tunnels, it also has a dock with boats in to get to my floating wooden base.

Just been playing about in the free version.
How can such a pointless waste of time be so entertaining

Gave this a go last night - frame rate was terrible on my netbook. Gutted

I know it's *only* a netbook, but it's spec is like a high end laptop from 4 years ago. And that game looks like something from 10 years ago Optimize code dammit!
