Treat it as a once in a life-time opportunity - all you've got to do is climb that 15m once.

Think yourself lucky - my dad is a retired fireman, he had to climb down ladders with a 13stone dummy on his shoulders when he did it

Just concentrate on the rungs under your feet and the sides you're holding onto. These feel exactly the same at 4 inches off the ground and 45ft off the ground.

So you want to be a fireman but are scared of climbing ladders... Brilliant.

Its like a stripper being scared of metal poles

    High enough to kill

As mentioned don't look down and you'll be fine. I also find that not looking up helps too.

Isn't being a firefighter when afraid of heights like becoming a deep sea diver when you're afraid of water? :P

Good luck mate, the adreniline will get you through!

At the risk of sh*tting you up... I'm not a great fan of heights either. Its high. I'm approx 2m tall so its like standing on 7 of me. I'd guess somewhere in the region of 3 stories

However, the ladder isnt going to be some shoddy bluepeter thing - it'll obviously be a big ladder.

I'm sure it'll be very rare (if ever) whilst in Tyndrum you're required to climb 15m to put out a fire/rescue burning children etc...

If he gets in he'll be faced with plenty more that will scare him, not letting that fear stop you is the key.

Good luck, concentrate on where you're putting your hands and feet. As mentioned, when I joined I had to carry a live casualty down, health and safety have seen to it you won't do that!

To be honest if your afraid of heights then a firemans job maybe aint the one for you.
Its a bit like being a surgeon thats a bit squeamish around blood

Falling doesn't kill you, it's the sudden stopping at the bottom..

I'm not keen on heights, I've been a firefighter for eleven years, the fear keeps you focussed!

Unless you live in a town where there is a serial arsonist, or where cats have a penchant for climbing trees and getting stuck, you'll be sat around scratching your arse or playing snooker most of your time anyway, when you aren't telling old people they should fit smoke alarms
