Clutch release bearing, cost to sort! ?

Hiya just looking at a 200sx at the moment, went to view it and all is pretty good, it has a little rust underneath but apart from that the only issues are a sticking brake on front left and slightly noisy clutch release bearing (its pretty quiet in reality) it makes the noise when its engaged but when you press the clutch in the noise goes.

how much roughly would it be to fix it myself or at a mechanics

    Thanks

changing the release bearing is same as changing the clutch plate/assembly so would be same work/cost as having a clutch change (tbh your better off changing the clutch while your there anyway, saves coming back again another time!)
    bovvered?

ghazoobe this is what I thought, the bloke said he had his clutch changed a couple thousand miles ago but the 'noise' has been there the whole ten years he has owned it, which makes me very suspcious because surely you would get it done the same time??

I was thinking this but it would have gone way before now if it's been whining for 10 years !

Clutch kit usually comes with a fresh release bearing

If the whirring noise happens when the clutch pedal is pressed in, it's a release bearing noise.

If the whirring noise happens in neutral with the clutch pedal untouched, it's gearbox bearing noise.

My S14 had the gearbox bearing noise a few years ago but I don't notice it now. Maybe I just don't notice it anymore, or maybe the noise stopped after an oil change. Not sure.

    ^^^ This.
My old car had the input shaft bearing for 26k and never blew up. Stage 1 for most of that.
To change the input shaft bearing you need to pull the box apart AFAIK. Hence mine rattled away merrily throughout my ownership...

Changing the release bearing isn't that bad. It can be done in a long evening or a weekend, depending on experience.
Exhaust, starter and driveshaft must be removed, then gear stick surroundings and eventually the stick itself. Loosen the gearbox and gearbox mounts, tilt the engine backwards and take the box of.

If you have bought a new bearing with sleeve, just replace the old one, and put it all back together. If you have bought only the bearing, knock the sleeve of the bearing with a ratchet socket and a vise

    Wash the sleeve

Use a bigger socket and knock the new bearing on the sleeve and mount it to the gearbox. Use a bit of grease on the sliding surface

Then it's just a matter of getting the box up there again, mounting the other stuff and driving more
