As a few people are already aware, I recently got a New Workshop.
This is one of the first projects to be done in there.
I'm building it for a mate, and hope some people may find it interesting. :D

A few pictures of how the car looked when it arrived.

And the Motor of choice, A Series II RB25DET out of an R33 Skyline, complete with Greddy Plenum.

The Shell already had an attempt at a removable slam panel that we'll re-work later on.
Put the Motor in for Mock Up and to check Clearance.
Also mocked up the Radiator and Intercooler.

coming on well...
Thanks dude.
Plans for the rear arches?
Looking good!
What sort of cash would I be looking at for an RB25 conversion for an S14A?
depends on what you want in it...
as in do you want the standard inlet manifold, oor do you want a GReddy style one??
are you going to modify the subframe or use a skyline one??
what power do you want from it?
and are you doing it yourself or getting a garage to do it??
i am also having the conversion done and i have spent quite a bit doing it..
danny
I'd get a garage to do it and I'd really only do what was recommended. If the skyline subframe is a better option that's what I'd choose to do. I'd not really want the Greddy IM but I'd use my turbo etc from my S14 just now probably!
Thanks Ross.
As dannyboi200sx stated, It's pretty much dependent on what you want done.
I would have thought a basic install with you supplying the parts would set you back around £1500'ish ?
An RB25 on an S13 Subframe will need Custom Motor and Box Mounts.
If you use the long RB25 Box you'll also need a Custom Prop-shaft I think.
Other than that, it will be:
Custom Wiring Loom.
Possible Bulkhead Mods.
Intake Plumbing.
Radiator Plumbing.
Custom Exhaust Elbow and Downpipe.
I think that's the most of it.
The Greddy Plenum's are a bit of a pain when it comes to clearance.
The Wheels on this are quite interesting.
Although essentially just a Work Meister S1, I believe they were custom made for one of the D1 Drivers in Japan, which explains the Dishy One Piece Rears.
It did mean we needed to convert from 4 to 5 Stud, and lose the Conversion Spacers.

R32 Skyline Rear Hubs.
Fitted New Grippy Handbrake Shoes at the same time.
http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000090.jpg
Did the same with the Fronts.
S14 Front Hubs with S14 4 Pot Callipers and S14 Lower Arms to increase the Track width.

http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000115.jpg
Thought this would be relatively straightforward, But thanks to the Rust, took most of the evening. :(
You can't write something like tthat and not give the wheel specs :whip:
im not sure on the bulkhead mods but i know for ure you have to get a prop made up. it may be possible to use the r33 downpipe/elbow/all-in-one piece downpipe, radiator plumbing is just getting lengths of the silicone hose and making it yourself, and intercooler pipework using the standard inlet manifold is a right pain in the arse and you have to cut some of the bonnet brace off to make it fit.
on a s14 you can use the r33 subframe and it fits, you have to make a gearbox mount, and the wiring loom you have to make yourself.
if you think about parts you may need the list could be alot...
danny
The Modifying of the Bulkhead is mainly dependent on how far forward in the bay you decide to mount the Engine.
I've got the RB25DET mounted to an RB20 Gearbox for this project.
The RB20 Box is much shorter so you can retain the standard Prop-shaft.
Upon fitting the S14 Lower Arms, It seemed a good idea to install new Ball joints.

We were supplied a really poor quality copy of a rocket bunny spoiler, And as I hate rocket bunny crap anyway, decided to make my own version of it.
Started making the original one fit to use as a base.

Aiming for an Aggressive Nascar style deck spoiler with quite a sharp edged finish.
I'll go to and from this while doing other things.
Nice one Will .
Good to see the workshop is up and running... still got to pop back down and see you about my car but just haven't had the time, soon for sure.
Made a start on fitting up the Over-fenders.
http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000171.jpg
Trimmed to an even size.
http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000172.jpg
Test fitted.
http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000176.jpg
http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000177.jpg
Alignment done and Temporary Fixings in.

http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000179.jpg
http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000180.jpg
And a little more trimming.
http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000186.jpg
http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000187.jpg
The next step is going to be tackling the Offside panel damage before the Over-fenders can progress.
http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000105.jpg
http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000106.jpg
Looking good Will, but you have to crack on and make space for mine! I'm ready and waiting now, bushes are bought, loom is stripped, i'm ready! Let me throw some money at you! :)
Made a little progress with my Nascar spoiler.

http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000174.jpg
http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000175.jpg
Then made a start straightening the Rear Quarter panel.
Didn't want to go too mad as it will be covered, just straight enough to mount the Over-fender.

http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000210.jpg
will, i'm using an R33 front crossmember + CA/SR box + RB20 bell housing and needed to shorten the prop by 45mm, so I'm not sure you'll get away without doing the prop. it looks like you're mounting it closer to the firewall than I did too.
I've never had an RB20 gearbox rear half to compare to the CA/SR boxes though.
Thanks for the info Alan.
I'm using an S13 Cross-member + RB20 Box + Modified Motor and Box mounts.
It all seems to line up properly, Gearbox and Prop are fully engaged and the Gear selector sits quite central in it's hole.
I think the RB20 Box is a fair bit shorter than the RB25 Box, Unfortunately I didn't measure against the CA/SR Box when I had it.
Had a Bumper Delivery !
Unfortunately it's a Poor quality Fake Rocket Bunny.
I hate genuine Fail Bunny stuff, And thought this looks awful, So on the lookout for an Origin Rear now.
http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000192.jpg
http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000200.jpg
At least the Origin Side-skirts look good fitted up.
http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000199.jpg
Progressed the Spoiler slightly.
http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000211.jpg
http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000212.jpg
Also made a start on the Wiring Loom.
http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000161.jpg
Had a dry fit up of where it will need to run.
http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000163.jpg
http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000164.jpg
Looking good!
Looking very nice.
I have a question thou thats been bugging me since I followed Lam`s Aristo build. What are those fasteners You use for parts measuring etc??
Thanks a Lot
Thanks dude.
Those fasteners are 'Aviation Skin Pins' They were used primarily in the World War to temporarily fix the Aluminium Sheet to the Aircraft Fuselage before being Riveted.
They are basically a sprung loaded fixing that you insert through a pre-drilled 1/8th Inch hole.
Everywhere you see one on the Over-fenders, will have a Rivet in it's place when they're permanently fixed on. :D
Aka cleco pins I do believe. still used today!
Looks nice! Wasn't sure on rocket bunny style stuff but lve grown to it
Car looks awsome mate. But who the hell made those fenders they are shocking to need that much cutting off!
Thanks a lot Found those on uk ebay. Just need to get them to Poland now.
Keep up the good work, I remember my jaw dropped when I saw Lam`s car on clubaristo so I`m sure this will be amazing as well..
The Loom was a bit of a mess.
Looks like someone had started to try a conversion, but only had a crack at odd bits, and some was quite messy.
http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000117.jpg
http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000118.jpg
http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000120.jpg
Decided to strip it all back and begin converting from SR to RB, I'll also remove anything I don't want to thin it out.
Where someone had already cut the slam panel for access, I started to tidy it up, and strengthen it up with some mounting points.
http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000202.jpg
Hammered out a couple of Brackets.
http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000203.jpg
http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000204.jpg
Temporarily mounted them up.
http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000217.jpg
Welded some Nuts to the bottom to make a captive fixing.
http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000218.jpg
Welded the Brackets onto the chassis side.
http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000220.jpg
And test fitted the now Bolt-on Panel.
http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000221.jpg
http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000222.jpg
Made a start thinning down the Wiring Looms and removing anything I didn't want.
Started with the ABS ECU.

http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000242.jpg
Made a big last minute decision regarding the Over-fenders.
It was going to be necessary to cut an widen the Over-fenders to fit the wheels, But unfortunately due to the poor quality of them this wasn't going to work out as planned.
Decided to use a set of my own +50mm Over-fenders instead.
http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000244.jpg
http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000243.jpg

http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000247.jpg
http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000248.jpg
They do require a bit of finishing as they've been sitting for some time and used for mock-up previously.

http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000259.jpg
Some good progress there starting to really take place!!
it looks sick!
Awesome looking build, loving the quality of work and attention to detail, nice to see someone doing it with a passion for doing things right even if it does take a bucket load more work.
As for the NASCAR style spoiler have you thought about doing some end plates for it similar to Dai Yoshihara's ps13?

Personally I think it makes the rocket bunny spoiler look a million times better
Thanks very much man, I appreciate it.
I'm aiming for a high standard of work, but also being realistic about the intended purpose for the car.
So far I've only really given thought to getting it into a shape that I'm happy with, But I do quite like the idea of End Plates.
I'm planning on making a Mould of it when it's done, and it wouldn't take much to add an end plate to one as an option.
Thanks dude, It's given me food for thought.
quick question will as ive seen you have done it a few times.
Whats can be stripped from the engine bay loom to make it smaller so i can hide it away. i will be removing the abs so i know that can all go but is there anything else that can be relocated fairly easy?
I made a start cutting the Bulkhead for clearance.
Decided to try and retain the original metal, just work it inside out.
http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000278.jpg

http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000294.jpg
http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000295.jpg
Quality work, everything is being done right! Are you going to move the engien back as far as possible? MIne handled a bit front heavy on the standard R33 frame. Keep it up. ;)
Hey dude
The ABS system has some of the largest cable diameters in the entire loom, So removing it in it's entirety including all Relays, Wheels Sensors, etc, Should allow you to sufficiently thin your Bay Loom down.
I can't remember off the top of my head what else can be removed, other than auxiliary systems like Air Con.
I know with this project going Sil80 I can remove everything associated with the Pop-Up headlight's, which is a fair amount.
I will have a look for you tomorrow when I'm down my Unit. :)
Thanks very much.
I'm working with some Non standard Engine Mounts that came with the Engine.
I've got it tucked right up against the Firewall at the moment.
I should have made some New Mounts from scratch, But at the same time I needed to be respectful of my mates budget, So I'm making do with what I've got.
I've got it mounted on an S13 Frame at the moment, I would have liked to keep the Engine Mass behind the centreline of the Front Turrets but it would have meant some more serious Firewall modifications.
Thanks. :)
Continued thinning down the Looms.
My pile of excess cable is slowly growing.

http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000269.jpg
http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000275.jpg
Also made a big decision to make Custom Over-fenders, A design I've been thinking about doing for some time.
They're going to be a balance of Aggression and Clean Smooth Lines.
The large flat flanks on top being the most noticeable.

http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000272.jpg
http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000273.jpg
Made a start on the area that homes this messy crap.
http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000297.jpg
Removed the Battery Tray.
http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000299.jpg
http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000300.jpg
http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000301.jpg
Followed by the Relay Box bracket.
http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000302.jpg
http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000303.jpg
http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000304.jpg
Welded up a couple of holes by the Cable Grommet.
http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000307.jpg
http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000309.jpg
Then welded on my new Earth mounting point, So it's no longer in the bay.
http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000310.jpg
Next up will be the custom mounting points for the Relay Boxes. :D
wow those overfenders look fking awsome!
keep up the good work dude :)
your doing some real nice work but i have a couple of questions if i may.
firstly why did you cut the bulkhead/tunnel when the engine and box would go in as it was? even with my rb as far back as i could get it the box cleared the tunnel.
secondly what have you done to the overfenders? i see a couple of flat edges but they dont appear to offer any more actual width to the car to cover the wheels.
perhaps im just a prime example of the old adage about never showing a woman or a fool a half finished job :D
Thanks man, Yeah I'm always happy for constructive criticism.
The reason for cutting the Bulkhead, was because the Engine and Box doesn't fit.
I assume you're also using and RB25DET and RB20 Box, but maybe not be using the same Engine Mounts ?
Either way, the Gearbox Bell-housing fouls on the standard tunnel and lower bulkhead.
My thinking behind showing the progression of work was that people reading a build thread would take interest in how the process came about, rather than just showing a before and after picture.
I'm probably wrong though and most people may just find it tedious and drawn out ?
The reason for swapping out the original Over-fenders were to gain width, The current one's are a +50, whereas the original one's were a 40'ish and differed both sides.
The reason for changing the design of the New Over-fenders is purely for aesthetics.
I'm so bored of seeing the same generic fake copy rubbish in +25, +50 and +70 fitments, that I wanted to add my own style to it, and get a fresh design out there.
Once they're completed I'll make some Moulds and create a finished Fiberglass piece, So it won't be rolling around full of Filler.
Tbh I think its less criticism and more just asking - questions are good as poople always have different ideas of how to do things !
As for tedious im in the "the more info and pictures the better" camp.
Lots of people do the whole fitted my overfenders - heres how cool it looks now but no one shows the process and thought behind it !. Ive been watching this thread with interest and hope it continues like it started :)
as above, i love threads like your were you show every step you have taken.
defo want to see what you do with hiding wiring and relay boxes thats what interests me most at the moment..
What did you do with regards to the Q45 Throttle body wiring? I have read the Spec 1 RB25 can reuse its TPS but the Spec 2 would involve mods to the loom?
Nice work BTW
Some good work and why you using the rb20 box and not the rb25??
Made a start on my Custom Relay Box locations.
The plan was to do a subtle Shaved and Tucked Bay without taking away from the cars intended purpose.
So the Relay boxes will stay in the Bay, but mounted in a more subtle location.
Started on the Offside Box.

Loving all the fab work on this. Truly inspirational! I wish I had the cash to let you co all out on my car too lol
Have you checked to see if the headlights foul your new relay box though? There is not much room behind my Sil80's headlights iirc (but I have weird long HID units).
Another fantastic build Will,
Great work again, I shall be keeping an eye on it.
That relay box is brilliant
I stitched a couple of seams together, then made a recess in them for my planned cable run.

Made a crappy looking but functional bracket to mount the factory power plugs.
http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000344.jpg
Had to fill a hole before it could be mounted on the chassis leg.

Each Plug and Cable will need to be wired to the correct length before they are installed.

With the new Connector mounting point in place, Made a start on the associated wiring.
Started by shortening and re-routing the Alternator wiring.

The new Cable run.
http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000387.jpg
Very neat work with some nice new ideas :)
The next job was to sort out the messy wiring along the Intake manifold.
http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000388.jpg
Decided to run it along the underside of the Manifold, with the necessary plugs exiting under the Throttle Body.
http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000389.jpg
Prepared the rest of the Loom to run back to the ECU.
http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000390.jpg
I found a convenient area under the Inlet to run the Loom through the Bulkhead.... So cut a nice big hole in it.
http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000394.jpg
And then added a return to it, that locks a Rubber Grommet in place, just like factory.

Neatened up the Coil pack wiring a little.
http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000402.jpg
Needed to extend these two Connectors.
http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000404.jpg
First the Power Transistor wiring.
http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1000405.jpg
Followed by the Coil wiring.

You must be a patient man! Looks great though
Some brilliant work going on
Awsome fab skills mate :)
Every time i see your work im amazed  Just bought a welder, if i can get 1/2 as good as u with the fab work i'll be more than happy :)
Regards, Tim
good work with the wiring chap, I know how nasty it is peeling off that much insulation tape and corrugated sleeve
I'm surprised at how far back the engine is sitting too - that's easily another 20-30mm further back than mine (I can easily fit the heater matrix pipes behind the head)
very neat work :) id never have the patience! fair play
Thanks bud.
Yeah it's always a crappy messy job, made worse by other people's additions. :wack:
Basically, The Engine came with some Modified Mounts, as I believe it was taken out of an unfinished S13 conversion project.
I'm really regretting not making my own now, As it's caused nothing but issue's, especially with Clearance.
I'm struggling to fit a Clutch Master Cylinder behind it at the moment. :annoyed:
