View Full Version : whats up with my car?
when i put my alloys on my car ...on one side at the back it rubbed... on the other side it didnt rub at all ...i grinded out the arch on the other side and it helped the problem...
but recenly its started rubbing more...and its now also rubbing on the side that never used to rub :wack:
could there be something wrong with my rear suspention?
my mate said my rear offside wheel moved alot ...when i put the car in reverse ... maybe my car needs a wheelbearing?
my mot is in 4 days and im wondering if this is gonna cost me :|
thing is the car is not driving any differently ?

Is the Axle moving side to side? (I take it were talking Dolly here?) Are the alloys a different Offset on each one - had a similar thing on a merc - Original and copy wheels.
i have a gearbox mounting to go on it...because it has started to knock when you pull away fast from a standstill
could it be related

What suspension set up does a Dolly have? My Herald did that when the tierod mountings were fooked, only the torsion stiffness of the transverse leaf holding things together
not sure...i know its got a live axel though :wack:
Live axles oscilate as you accelerate for reasons I can't be arsed to explain which gets worse as the bushes wear.
Live axle or not... find out or inspect the following:
Wheel Bearings
Diff hanger mounts and bushes
Wishbone or trailing arm bushes
I'd hazard a guess that its probably a semi trailing arm setup without coil overs.
Check you haven't got a bent/broken/mis-seated spring or a rotten spring mount.
The trailing arms bolts and bushes flex over time...
What else?
High possibility - chassis flex getting worse due to a seam coming un-welded. Highly likely if you've lowered it / trackday'd it / wider rims... etc.

done all 3 to my car
Wheel Bearings
Diff hanger mounts and bushes
Wishbone or trailing arm bushes
ill have a look at the above
"Front suspension by unequal length wishbones, featured coil springs and telescopic dampers above the upper 'bones, the lower 'bone was formed by a transverse link and a trailing radius rod. The live rear axle was located by four trailing radius arms, the springing and damping medium acting on the lower pair of radius rods. The upper radius rods acutely angled inwards towards the top of the diff casing all but constituted an A bracket. Anti roll bars were fitted front and rear. "
radius arm bushes worn..... £5 says so
so that is what you thinks wrong
what do you do if you think its a wheel bearing?
jack the car up and look for play?
how about for the arms

Tend to agree with Dunk, jack up car,put on stands, grab wheel at 12 and 6 oclock, pull and tug then do the same at 3 and 9 oclock, if you have any probs - get an assistant (in best haynes manual stylee) to check for movement, - with the handbrake off! - there should be no movementand should spin freely and not sound rough.
For the radius arms, get big screw-driver or big lever, and wedge between arm and chassis and see if any movement - or if the arm has 'sprung' from the bush. IIRC the arm bush is a rubber mount about 1.5" in diameter, as long as it returns to its original positionhas no cracks and is not perished its okay - there is ment to be movement is this type of bush.
Dude! There's more wrong than that!
It looks just like a Triumph Dolomite!
Sorry. Couldn't resist. :p :D Hope you can sort it.

remember....it was allmost embedded in the back of your car :D
the radius arms bushes are ****ED
just had a look :wack:
could that cause the problems? are they supposed to hold the cars rear suspension ?

Yes, the uppers are to locate side to side as well as lateral, the lowers are to locate lateral only - which is knackered?
Do you have a vice to press the bush out or is it hammer, chisel, blow torch and hacksaw?
hmmm
did not see the lowers?
the uppers  there is not bush left...its all pushed through or perished
same on both sides
should i get the lowers changed aswell then? if they dont cost much for the bushes ?

The lower are the pair with the springs attatched and the uppers are the ones pointing toward the diff, - I probably know this sounds like teaching sucking off eggs but, wheyhay.
Send pics - allways like to see mechanical carnage that people have been driving around in.

Look at it this way, it can either work or not work, thats 50% chance of working :wack: - yes, thats good odds in my book.
Get spanners, and twiddle, I'm sure the rest of the peeps on here will help out - a sort of Open University for Dolly( :wack: ) mechanics.
Best experience in my book is to go out and f**k it up yourself, then sit back in your own awesomeness when it works out - look at me, started off by putting a 45 weber onto the Mini( many moons ago), then you can end up by being bored mid winter and do things like chuck V8's into S13's.
i depend on this car being here and working though
just cant do it :(
shame because you should see the state of the su's on it... there not working well at all... eating there dashpot oil... i think the jets are dirty
my car is not running at all right with the su's it seems slow now
if i pull my choke out * yes i know ffs!* the car revs alot faster ...i think my car is running very lean... but im not too sure how i can adjust this?
it seems to idle o.k

Easy, do What I've allways done with Su's......

No, the're sofisticated Su's and not worth the bother either.

Facet red top with a regulator set at 3psi. running 8mm fuel lines thru a filter.
If you were closer I'd fire ( not literally) them on.
looking at the system on my car
how crude is the suspension layout :wack:
still not as bad as the capri
LEAF springs :D
