Well thanks for some of the helpful and obviously concerned replies. Before I proceed I would like to say that i have decided to go the route suggested by Dr Dolittle. i am going to buy my own wheels and upgrade the front brakes using the 300zx parts. A straight swap except for the discs which can be redrilled to a five stud pattern. Having said that I may have sourced a company that would supply 300zx discs with the correct stud pattern for my car anyway.
Regarding some of the other comments I am a little surprised at some of the anti modification attitudes some of you displayed. i would assume that many of you opt to modify your cars from standard.

Many of the safety points you mentioned I was already aware of. Admittedly I am not an engineer however I am educated (BSc Chem). My point of posting this query was to a. Get some data relating to the parts on the volve which I was interested in. And b. Hear some of your opinions to aid me in the appraisal of a relatively simple engineering problem.

As regards machining new hubs the cost wouldn't have been to much for me since I have a number of friends in engineering who could easily produce such castings. I had considered using drop forged steel for the task since it is stronger than the steel used in the original hub.
In responsew top a few of your points raised.

I certainly wouldn't have re drilled the hubs. This would be dangerous and silly. However, a new hub could have been drilled out to whatever stud pattern was required.

With regards to offset i was aware that altering the offset would affect road handling. Indeed, Norris Designs had already provided me with data relating to offset. They are the UK leading 200sx specialist. I was happy that the data provided bt them would be correct and ensure that I chose a safe set up.

BE safe. Yes, I fully intend to be. That is why I posted a query in the first place. Two heads are better than one.

Dad's replacement wheels are volvo wheels. just a different design. So I am confident they will be up to the job. It is likely that he will be wanting to sell the other volvo wheels and I will post them up here if that is the case.

Finally, with regard to 'Grow up son and think what you are doing'. Well that is exactly what I am doing by poosting here. I would have expected informed replies since my reason for posting here was that I wasn't sure about the technicalities involved with this job. As far as the comment 'leave the engineering to the manufacturer, they spend millions getting it right'. This maybe the case. however it doens't mean that someone with a brain and the ability can't produce something as good or better. In fact employing a team of engineers and spending millions doesn't always infer that you are going to get an outstanding product. Don't believe me - look at the wobbly bridge in London.

Anyway. thankyou to the majority of you who helped me by pointing out some of the potential pitfalls and thankyou also for your concern regarding my overall safety. but for the individual who saw fit to pollute this intellectually stimulating thread with some pathetic and immature patronising comments my advice would be to grow up yourself son.

Cheers lads

Yeah guys I know this is 200sx site. However, I tried to reply to a thread on the volvo bb after some ****head decided to patronise me instead of contributing a sensible response to a query i posted. however, the volvo bb board for some reason is only letting me reply with 45 or less characters.

So don't start ok.

it's posted in the right sectipon and labelled up correctly and i am already narked at someone elses unhelpful comments - so let it be.

Okay I have calmed down now. i was getting a bit stressed trying do 101 things simultaneously. sorry for any confusion but the patronising fella on the volvo forum needed putting in his place and I couldn't get their BB to accept a reply. Done it now so you can forget this.
