As it says. Have spent ages of Doom9.org looking around only to find that all of the guides expect you to know anything and everything about using all of the millions of software packages you need to do this seemingly simple task.
I dont fancy spending 4+ hours reading up just to copy a DVD FFS

Anyone know where any proper and complete guides are?

Nero Recode can do a passable job I think :)

I use Pinnacle Instant copy which automatically formats the output to fit on the 4.7Gb, it also allows the removal of unwanted subtitles etc.

get a DVD Ripper, and rip files to your HDD, then use DVD Shrink to compress it, then simply burn back to DVD :)

Cheers for the help everyone.
I've just had to change my clock back to February  so I can use the free version of Nero Recode, and burnt the movie on a DVD-RW to test. Unfortunately the sound is waaaaaaay to quiet when playing back so next port of call is DVDshrink :)

I've tried all of the above and a couple of others but the success rate wasn't that high despite trying all the usual remedies - different media, defrag, turn off screen saver, ensure hard drive & DVD writter on seperate IDE channels etc etc!

Now use DVDXCOPY Platinium which is the simplist program ever requiring no additional software e.g. burning decrypting etc. It has very few options which in some ways is a bad thing but it's extremely reliable IMO. All you do is select what chapters you want to copy(I choose them all), select if you want compression to a single DVD (I always turn off compression to maintain original quality & span 2 DVDs as they're so cheap now). That's it.

DVDShrink seems to make the DVD's loads quieter, too.

Just turn the sound up on the telly and make use of its power instead of the players. :)

DVD X COPY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

dont bother with other stuff, one program does it all! you can choose to just have the main movie or get it to compress all the menus and extras to fit on a DVDR.

ripping normally only takes 15mins and then 15mins to burn on my 4x writer.

DVD decryptors crap.

What you need is AnyDVD, it removes all restrictions from the driver layer including encryption, so no decoding time, just go use DVD shrink straight from the dvd in the drive!
