View Full Version : "Chipping" TDIs ?
Chatting to some builders outside the place i work whilst having a cigarette this morning..
one of the younger lads was asking about my car, and what i'd done to it... going on about how he was "chipping" his VW golf TDI..
everyone seems to be talking about it, but what does it do?!? i asked him and he had no idea.. just seemed to think there was magic bhps in it..
does it raise boost? more aggressive fueling?? theres not retarding/advancing etc of ignition, as its on glowplugs.. (is this right).. basically, what exactly does "chipping" actually alter?? not valve timing surely as this must still be mechanical not pneumatic..
i'm assuming that the ECU of the VW TDIs is pretty comprehensive in its control of the engine and fueling...

post taken from over on talkaudio, but i thought you guys might have some answers..

My pal works at a local Agricultural Vehicle suppliers (they sell tractors and some serious quick quads), they also sell and fit these.
I don't know much about them apart from the fact that you get a load of different versions, from different companies, they do work but destroy your mpg and that they're simply plug and play IIRC.
Apparently one of the VW TDi's they've got was quicker than a standard GTi after they fitted one of these. Never seen it go, although are VW TDi's not seriously quick out of the box nowdays?
A little googling and I've found the ones they use:
Tuning Box (http://www.tuningbox.com/ANG/p4ang.php)
I wouldn't believe everything they say though, its not like they'd sell well if they told the truth is it?

Rob who used to be on here has bought a 156 2.4 JTD. He is have the ECU done on that. It will increase BHP to around 190..............................and torque to 300 ft/lbs!!!! Only costing around £300 aswell :D
its just that nobody seems to have a clue about how they do it..
just huge increases in bhp, but no explanation how/why..
i was just curious..

AFAIK they increase the boost pressure, chuck a load more fuel and advance the injection point (like spark ignition timing).

the timing on a diesel engine is controlled by when the fuel is injected
this is controlled by the ecu - hence it can be mapped just like a petrol car.
in fact i am assured by a diesel development engineer at ford (who also built his own turbo and supercharged mk2 golf track car) that diesel engine management is in general far more developed than petrol ones.
Bubble chipped his Mondeo TDCi and raised the power to 155 from 130 and got shit loads more torque.
Gary can supply these chips. :Plug:
Im thinking of getting our Omega estate done. 2.5l straight six BMW engined turbo dielel. Should be a bit more lively with a load more boost :notworthy

Yep and it goes like stink and still does 40+mpg :D
Ask Martin_T and Skyline Matt how well it went on the way to Santapod last year

With increasing boost on a turbo diesel, what impact does the charge temperature have?
as the ignition is controlled by pressure rather than a spark.. are there any issues with pre-detonation?
cheers for the answers people :D exactly what i was after..

I was told that the boost pressure was not raised, but they way that the boost came in was altered, along with the fueling. Fuel consumption, if anything was slightly better, which is more than can be said about the front tyre wear
