Nissan Sunny ZX

My mate has just bought one - dirt cheap, but it has a problem suspected to be the gear box. It has a constant whine in all gears, dip the clutch and the noise goes away. However, when pulling up to a junction and going for 1st (whilst still moving) it makes the noise as you try the gear (before it is even selected)

Anyone got any suggestions as to what it could be? Also, are there any other cars with the same gearbox? The motor is a CA18 and looks the same as the S13 jobbie, minus the turbo. Did and of the bluebirds have the same box on :confused:

Is it the ZX coupe? They have the CA16, nick his cams. So will look dead similar to the CA18, they dont have the strenghtend bottom end though.

When I took my car for MOT, the guy said the S13 gearbox was the same as the silvia, not sure though.

He should be able to get a gearbox dead cheap. Sounds like it's pretty poorly. :(

No, its just the Sunny ZX, like the one Mattj had before his S13 http://www.silvia-s13.net/images/car1.jpg and it deffo has the 1.8 motor in it.

Is it the big one on the right?

The 1.8 was a single cam though wasn't it?
I'm not being argumentative, just unsure.

If it's the CA18 then perhaps the S13 bell housing will match. Mr Pidgeon had one or two for sale a while back for about £150, Stve had one of them though I think.

I used to have a 1.8 ZX coupe - loved it, vastly underrated car. Had a similar problem with my gearbox - started whining just after the warranty ran out (typical). Dealer quoted something stupid like £1200 for a new gearbox and a few hundred quid to fit it. Bought a Haynes manual, stripped the box and replaced a bearing - total cost about £100. Took a lot of time though...... and my mum didn't appreciate it sitting on her kitchen table for a week.

My kitchen is currently host to my old S13 gearbox in many a peice. :D :D :D :D
My prob is knackered fifth gear though.

Was it the thrust bearing?

Alternatively did the bluebird ZX have the same box?

Jezz, dont think the S13 box will fit, the sunny / bluebird are FWD ;)
