I've fitted a new hard drive and CD/DVD drive today and installed windows and office etc. Every time I go online to try and download the latest office updates the damn thing keeps re-booting. Any ideas on what's fcukered? It is doing my head in. :annoyed:

Which bit of the computer though? The software was working on the previous installation. Then the computer started going doolally, so I assumed it was the hard drive.

Did you reinstall or just copy from the old hdd? Does it pop up a message about rebooting with a countdown or does it just reset with no warning?

Copied from previous hard drive this afternoon and then I was getting a countdown and I thought it may have been a virus that couldn't be detected. So I removed the old hd and reformatted the new one and did a complete new install. Now it is just resetting without warning.

Was joking.

Piehound has a very good point though.

My PC started doing this a while ago would die and try to reboot and just kept going through the post test and rebooting , occasionally it would boot but then die almost straight away put it down to my power supply being an arse and it was :D

but then it had run almost constantly for 3 years :smash: :D

Think a mate of mine has this, once removed you need the m/s up-date, is that right? how do you avoid getting it again before installing the fix? Not an expert, could do with a step by step guide guys,if its not too much trouble, or a link to fix for a P.C.numpty.

unplug the dvd drive and any non essential hardware , sounds like it might be your power supply.

When the counter apears telling you that its going to shutdown go to Start then Run and type shutdown -a and it should abort it... ;) Giving you time to sort it...

If you have Xp then activating the xp firewall should prevent it rebooting

The xp firewall maybe crap but it prevents the computer rebooting when you go online. Its rather difficult to download a firewall when your pc keeps shutting down. :D
