So boys who can sort explain this to me?
Here is a thread I posted on the BMW board, see if you can understand it. I sure as fvck can't. :(

Hi,

I'm struggling with my E30 316 M10 engine.
My basic fault is overheating and pinking.
I did a comp test only to find it was reading 13 Bar!!!!
Should be 10-11.

So I put a thicker Head Gasket in (+0.3mm) and decoked it, I've just rebuilt it and done another compression test and it is STILL 13 Bar.

It's not my compression gauge at fault as it reads fine on my other car. (Woohoo the S13 boys :))

Anyone got any ideas why this is, or things to look for?
I'm pretty confused to say the least and am tempted to try running 2 head gaskets but would prefer to avoid it.

Thanks,
Jezz.

if no-one can come up with a logical explation I'm just gonna go and buy another engine for it tomorrow. :( Really don't want to though really. Last thing I want is BMW bloody in the boot of my S13.

Nice nissan fecked BMW.

Jezz, have you checked your valve timing, valve train? if it was just one pot i would say a valve is not opening! if not timing!!

Hi Tricky,

Yeah it's all pots, you think it could be timing?

I have checked & double checked but it does seem incredibly wierd.

The two things that come to mind are high compression pistons or skimmed head. The thicker gasket might be a red herring because it depends on how much it compresses when tightened down.
Bad valve timing etc can only lose you compression, not gain it.
Did some previuos owner decide to soup it up a bit? If so I suggest you up the octane or retard the timing - should remove the pinking and overheating.

I advanced the valve timing (cam 20 deg) and the comp went upto 14.5 Bar.

I have now set the engine 10deg cam retarded and have got the correct compression. I does run better. They are the std pistons. and even in the head has been skimmed the thicker gasket made absolutely no noticable difference.

Think I'll just get another engine as save fecking around any longer. :(
