Saw on news this morning that the London Bus Company are selling their Routemaster buses. Prices range from £2,000 to £6,000 for a really good one
Insurance was quoted as about £300 for the average person and as long as you dont have more than 9 passengers you can drive them on a normal licence...
EDIT : News got it slightly wrong (Price)
Would you like to buy a Routemaster?
Vehicles are being sold off for further commercial use, preservation or scrap. If you want one then there are a couple of places to try, but both companies are being very careful to sell to genuine preservationists as well as, obviously, to commercial buyers.
One thing that they may well ask you to demonstrate is that you have somewhere suitable to keep your purchase - parking for double-deckers is at a premium, especially in the environs of London, as many of us know to our cost.
There is currently a limited supply of vehicles, so it's best just to contact them to get the current position:
Ensignbus at http://www.ensignbus.com.
British Bus Sales at http://www.britishbussales.co.uk
Please do not waste their time, however. If you have no intention of buying anything then please don't contact them.
Prices seem to range from £2,000 to over £12,000 depending on condition and type of engine fitted. Engine types are Iveco, Scania and Cummins, all with traditional RM semi-auto gearboxes. It is very unlikely that there will be any AEC-engined vehicles.
If there are any other sources of vehicles then we would like to add their details here. The Association is in no way commercially involved with either of the above companies, and we publish their names purely for your information.
Contrary to reports elsewhere, spare parts for all Routemaster vehicles are readily available - if you have a problem contact the RMOOA and we will see how we can help.
And if you buy one, please join the Routemaster Association - we will do our best to help you with information and parts wherever we can so that you can keep your pride and joy on the road for many years to come.
