HI All
I got my number plate valued which was a breaker, A company valued it at £400 for them to buy it, but they won't buy it if the car is not taxed or MOT'd
Could I transfer that number plate onto my Granada (Whic is MOT'd and Taxed) and then sell it
Any help will be great :)
Cheers
Dan
My understanding is that you can't tranfer a number from a car that isn't taxed and MOT'd.
And did you know that if you have a fancy private plate on your car and then write your car off, the plate technically belongs to your insurer and you would have to buy it back off them

Stupid english system
So basically if you had a number plate worth £2000 and your car failed an MOT on major work which couldn't be fixed the number plate is worthless?

Dan,
I think that's more or less it. The DVLA have the right to inspect both the donor and recipient vehicles if they wish. I have tranfered the plate that is currently on my 200 12 times since I had it and they have only asked to see the donor vehicle once.

Dan,
Thats bloody stupid but probably the case knowing this country

Dan,
The number has been tranfered from the donor vehicle and is currently being held in mid air, so to speak, not on a vehicle. Cost £25 pa to retain a number and you have to renew your application every year or else the number reverts to being the property of the DVLA.
How do you go about buying a private number plate from someone who has one registered on their car? i.e. they're willing to sell it to you.
I presume you'd have to notify the DVLA somehow?
Plus the seller would need to obtain a different registration number

Dan,
Always take your car in for an MOT a couple of weeks before it runs out ;) then you can overcome things like this :D

this is indeed true. I had a guy once write off his £30k porsche by being a tit. It was his second accident (the first one a totalled £25k merc) in 2 years. The insurance co wanted told him to go fcuk himself for his numberplate back which was worth over £10k on its own
Got the decision overturned in the end tho - after he went thro several pairs of brown trousers :D

Does the DVLA assign a new plate when you sell the one on a car?

Yes. Often you find the DVLA put back the original registration number.

So, if I bought a plate for say £100 of someone, would they incur any additional costs in obtaining another registration number?
I guess the seller would be kinda pissed if he sold a plate for £100 then had to fork out another £100 to get a new number? :wack:

I think it's part of the transfer fee.
I think it's part of the transfer fee.
So, would I or the seller have to pay this on top of the buying fee?

Depends on how the sale is arranged. Same as postage for something, the seller will specify whether the transfer fee is paid by seller or buyer. Probably buyer though.
