View Full Version : decent video card
im looking for advice from the pc folks here.
It will very soon be time for joint operations to be released by novalogic, and by the sounds of it, it will be awesome.
But....... i downloaded the 2nd demo a couple of days ago and cannot install it cos my Nvidia tnt2 64pro is no good.
so i wanna know a decent video card to buy which will handle the h+l or sommat like that, but wont leave me penniless.
also if someone has some decent 256 sd ram pc300, wouldnt mind another stick of it.

PCPRO (http://www.pcpro.co.uk/) have an online achive:
http://www.pcpro.co.uk/reviews/archive_search_p.php
It displays the name of the card price and rating, you can click on the names to get more information. I tried to copy the table across but it didn't work.
If the second link doesn't work go to the PCPRO (http://www.pcpro.co.uk/) site
Reviews >> Archive >> Select graphics card from the list and press go.
Hope this helps.

Thing is mate, most games these days are very CPU intensive as well. I may be wrongly assuming this but I assume you don't have a ninja CPU in there as well??
Whilst it used to be true that a good 3d accellerator would take the load off the CPU thats not so much the case these days as games seem to be written requiring one, leaving the CPU to do AI / physics etc.
Whats the rest of your pc and whats your budget?
Dave
At the moment (unless you want to spend serious money on the new ATI or Nvidia cards) your best bet is
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro which you can pick up for about £140.
It is overclockable to almost the same performance as the 9800XT which is over £100 more.
Bloody good card, but you need a spare molex connector to power it, and an AGP slot on your mobo too.
As Dave_S says, you need a good spec PC to get the most out of cards and games these days, and a decent 400W+ power supply too.
HTH ?

Cards based around the Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB are now about £130 and are incredibly good value for money
(forget the XT and 256 MB versions as they're not worth the massive extra outlay and the SE & non-'PRO' are cut-down versions).
The new X800's a step up again, but that's £300
Want at least a 2GHz processor & 512MB to back it up though.
i got a 1 gig processor, 512 ram, but its 2x128 and 1x 256, so id rather 2x 256.
its a AMD processor.
the rest is gibberish to me.
a g force 5600 was suggested to me and also a ti 4200.
tell ,me wat i need to know
kev, unless you're gonna upgrade anytime soon then just buy yerself a radeon 9600 cuz they're cheap and they do the job nicely. Geforces are ok too but you tend to get a bit less for your money.
otherwise search ebay for a cheap radeon 9500/9700
upgrading the CPU will deffo help a lot but the trouble is once you start with one thing you just expose other weaknesses and it can all get a bit pricey.
will it have the h and l thing though?
and which of these is it ?

yeah, the 9800 Pro has T&L (texture & lighting) and will play any game in all it's amazingness for a few months yet :D
Got un-used, unopened AOpen Aeoleus G Force 5900FX going spare, cost ~£150 just after xmas but will let it go for less.
PM me if you want it :)
You should be able to find an 5900FX Ultra for about £120 now.
I wish my salary went up as quick as the prices of these cards come down.
Actually, I just wish my salary went up !

get teh cheapest one mate - £60 is a fairly good rpice and it'll still be good enough for your next CPU. no p[oint blowing loads of money on something that requires a new CPU/motherboard and RAM
