Can I bring your attention to the following :D

Good stuff on the upgrade so far though :)
Can I pick your brains guys?
Didn't test the sound over the weekend as couldn't be arsed to connect the speakers :D
When I got home and wired everything in I can't get any sound :( The guy I bought the mobo from says it may be switched off in the BIOS - does anyone know what heading/setting tab it would be under and what I should be looking for?
Trying to play Farcry and the goits keep creepin up on me because I can't hear 'em!!!!!!
Thanks muchly

Yeah, just press DEL to enter setup as your computer boots. Then when in BIOS just search around under all the tabs, don't get intimidated by all the old skool text gubbins. Just browse around until you find the onboard audio setting and change it to enabled. Remember to install motherboard drivers in wondows as this will have a massive effect on performance!
Me and Theory were playing around with his new ATI X800 last night. Downloaded some tech demos and was blown away, man that card is ffffffffast!!! Played the Doom III e3 demo on max resolution settings and everything on max and it played like a movie!
I've installed the mobo drivers so thats
I flicked through the BIOS last night but couldn't find the setting :( probably because I dont know what I'm looking for  Do you happen to know the exact heading?
Mint_Sauce
15-06-2004, 12:49
ummm, I think on that board it's under a seperate heading. Something like Onboard prephirals (spelling?) under errrrr.... can't remember now but look for that.
ta mate - will give it a whizz tonight
I take it I'm right in my assumptions then? That it's probably off in the BIOS? Checked device manager and it says I have no audio device...

Yeah, that points to it being disabled in the BIOS.

WHAT WHAT WHAT WHAT WHAT  ?????
Is this new or the old dodgy 4fps alpha version from about a year ago?

That'd be the dodgy old crappy one from ages ago.. I kid you not it ran amazingly! it still had some missing sounds but at least the ones that were there sounded normal and the game ran smooooooooth (shadows on, bump mapping on, infact everything we could find - on!)
Battle will commence when I get home then :wack: Need it working baaadly :( I wanna play farcry

But Martin, i dont belive yours is as quick as mine... :p
arry... ooohhh... new processor needed urgently :D

:nod::D
I've actually got an athlon 1400 which Crazy Eddie kindly donated but forgot to bring it with me when I left there the other day :wack: That should do for now I reckon :)
Which brings me on to my next query - would it just be a case of pull out processor, slot new one under heatsink or is it a bit more complicated than that?? :wack:
Furthermore, c'mon guys - before I go home - someone PLeeeaasse tell me where this bloody audio device setting is gonna be in the BIOS :D

Yep it will be in the bios, maybe under intergrated prephirals, set to enable and when you reboot you will probably have to install the drivers for it as well.
Oh and as for your new cpu, it all depends on what your heatsink is rated at the moment.
If it already runs a bit on the warm side, 50 ish or so, then you will probably need a better one.

I've got another heatsink too, which came originally with the 1400 processor so hopefully that one will be up to the task :)
So in theory it is just a straight swapover job?

should be... :) just remember to ground yourself before doing the swap - touch some bare metal running to ground... or stuff a nail into the earth hole of a mains socket and toch that... :wack: and dont force the new processor in! there is a right way and 3 wrong ways round for it! lol! :)

What Machine have you got Matt? Theory's machine is pretty mean, mine cowers compared to his and i've got a 3.2Ghz with proper components!
EDIT: Just re-read your post. You were referring to Martin not Martyn as in Theory. I'm a uuuuuugghhh :p

lol, I fried my old 486 DX2 66 by putting the processor in the wrong way

Whats Theory's spec??? Mines an AMD64 3400, 1.5GB DDR400, 256mb 9800pro clocked beyond an XT :) 250gb SATA, 12speed DVD writer, 52speed CD writer

I think his is an Intel overclocked to 4Ghz, it runs in a water cooled case at minus 23 degrees!!! It's got the new X800 ATI card and 1gb of some crazy RAM. Everything is overclocked and it runs  He benchmarked it yesterday with the X800 card and got over 10,000 (think it was like 13,500 or something) on 3d mark 2003.

It's not a demo but a leaked Alpha of the game from last years E3. Old but still looks better than far cry!! :D

If it's at -23 degrees it'll be phase change cooled or TEC cooled.

Yeah, it's a pretty mean beast. It's in a different league to my machine
Nforce 2
AMD 2500+ overclocked to 3200
128mb 9800pro
512 RAM
it's way way faster, i'd say about twice as fast actually. That case isn't for novelty value, it actually needs it. :notworthy
I cant afford bleeding edge anymore :(
I'm still running
XP2500+ @ 227 * 10, 1GB PC3500 with Geforce 4 Ti4600.

Yeah, I gave up chasing last year. Now I just buy when I need it, was starting to get very expensive and as software is now playing catch up with the hardware (to an extent) there's not as much point anymore in buying bleeding edge. I always buy the one before the price jump, you know where the processors suddenly almost double in price. Same with the GFX cards.
haha, my case is excellent... phase change it is indeed...
I don't run at 4GHz though - I can, but its not stable 100% so I run 3.5GHz which is rock solid. It's pretty quick but I'd imagine at 3.5GHz that an A64 3400+ would out do it... at 4 GHz nothing will touch it though (except prometiea cooled systems)
I have some pretty trick corsair RAM with flashy LEDs on it too but aside from the X800 everything inside it is about 12 or 13 months old. Not bad going I think, last year when I got it, it was the absolute don.
Shame I don't ever use the thing... I use to be a proper computer nerd but I can't be arsed anymore - my job has detroyed any passion I had for computers and gaming although the X800 has given me a little boost of enthusiasm again :)
Hopefully Doom 3 (proper release) and HL2 (and CS) will restore the faith!

Yeah man, HL2 and Doom3. It's going to be an amazing few months when they finally come out.... Roll on 2006....

Ooh ooh and Duke Nukem FOREVER !!!!!!
Sorted it
Couldn't find it in the BIOS - because it isnt in there  but there's a jumper switch for it which had been disabled to allow a sound card by the previous owner. Swapped it over and job's a goodun :)
Next question - 57 degrees processor temps - bad???????
Anyone got any spare fans etc???

yeah it is a bit more than you want but it is hot lately... best thing to do is get fans sucking air out of the case at the top rear - they will remove hot air and cold air will replace it... they don't have to spin particularly fast either, just enough to keep the air moving.

heh, mine went up to 68 degrees the other day and that's with 4x90mm fans in a cooler master case with an induction tube that hangs out of my window. :wack:
LOL, hehehe Mint's cold air induction system owns

To be fair, you're room is well hot and you could make your fans spins faster (and er.. louder)
so where's cheap to get fans from then guys? (I mean rediculously cheap, or free preferably :) )

My fans all plug in to my PSU which has got a thermometer and adjusts the fans accordingly, usually it runs them all at max . Also, my Aero 7 CPU fan is REALLY loud at full whack so I try and keep it turned down a quarter.
anyone know how much it'd be to water cool my cpu, graphics card and get a silent psu? my power supply is really good, but it's quite loud and so is my graphics card fan
i had a look round the net a few months back but it was well expansive

Unfortunately cheap usually means shite :(
If you're prepared to do a little wire splicing I've got FCUK loads of fans (mostly 92mm)
Dave

92mm is good arry, you could probs fit two side by side...
otherwise spend £15 on a single 120mm vantec stealth jobby from overclockers.co.uk
cheers guys. Good Ol' Crazy Eddie has a few fans sitting about so he's gonna attempt a wacky-eddster bodge tomorrow :wack: (what have I let myself in for :D)
Will let you know the outcome
oh yeah, along with fitting the 1400xp processor - this time using the proper thermal grease :wack::D
