View Full Version : Any Ideas?
I'm looking for a cheap, reliable, quickish RWD car for a mate. I've suggested an E30 316-318i which fits the above criteria, but could be cheaper to insure for what is after all, a Ford Orion equivalent.
So has anyone got any other suggestions?
Must be RWD, reasonably economical and under £1000
Must NOT be rust prone, rare as fcuk or ugly as sin......
And don't anyone say, "A Sierra!" 'cos I won't laugh. ;)

E30 318i not a 316, bastard carb jobs. Same engine but injection.
Strong, good handling, cheap & easy to fix _if_ they go wrong. 150K not a problem.
I had a B reg one, and was ace, hammered it around never broke, was actually better than the new F reg one i have now handling wise. I had to get rid because it was a bit tatty rust wise, but basically the rear isolating bushes had gone and are a tw@ to replace.
There are a couple of spot to watch for rust, rear lights and in the boot.
Drivers seat always knackered.
They look okay, halfords are selling a set of 1/2 price springs at the min. :)
Have a look atwww.unixnerd.demon.co.uk/bmw.html for info on engines and brakes etc. I think by E reg the engine was an M40 and discs all round.
I do like BMW's though.
Jezz.
Toyota Corolla GT. The pre 87 ones were the ae86 shape. afaik they are rwd and have about 120-130hp from a 1600cc twin cam?? Drifters love 'em. Good for 0-60 in about 8sec?
Sorry, meant ae82. There's one on excange & mart. Put in Toyota Corolla in the make and model and gt in the keywords. It's up for a grand.
So Mitsi Starion would be out of the running then???
Capri!!! Innit
ahem

I owned a 320i not stunnly quick but fast enough to have some fun and they are very well balanced (better than the 200 IMHO) and also spares are dirt cheap from places like German & Swedish and Euro Car Parts, but they are so reliable that you rarely need to buy parts for them.
Also the straight 6 sounds the borrocks. :D
But if it were me I would go for a Mk2 Escort, easier to find than a Corolla GT and cheaper to fix.

Gotta agree with Paul, if your mate can go the extra few yards, try and strech to a 320i - price wise, they aint much more than the 316 / 318, but the straight 6 is a better engine.
Corolla - great car if you can find one
Starion - :D great car, but maybe a little pricy
Serria - erm, I got one - so dont diss the Denzil  ;)
Capri -
Manta - If you can find a good one
S12 Sylvia - If you can find a good one

Unfortunately getting one won't be particuarly cheap!
I nominate the FORD MK2 ESCORT.
So, it's a 318i then?
320 is too thirsty and too much insurance
Corolla is too rare
Manta's too big
Fords are, er, Fords. Sorry, too rusty..
...and he's just phoned to say he's bumped his Metro, so it's all getting a bit imminent!
